AW 18/19 Exaggerated surfaces
This season is being termed by many as the renaissance of design. It is redefining classics with a twisted aesthetic. There is a strong influence of the baroque era that can be seen in puffed up sleeves, round silhouettes and the melodramatic ornamentation. Garments with an excess volume are everywhere. Overall, apparel seems to have an added dimension to it. Be it through the volume of the silhouette, construction of materials or the embellishments, they are all more voluptuous and extravagant. Nonetheless, the aesthetic of the style is very chic, and if not always minimal, it is sophisticated with a spirit of fun associated with it. Evolving from Bio-Mimicry of 2018, nature-inspired trends follow an Eco-friendly appeal towards knits that offer furry and plush textures. There are long - pyjama pants styled with baggy outerwear, both crafted in fur. Fur is also applied to oversized scarfs and as embellishment on the sleeves and collars of garments. Outerwear has been puffed up adding opulent volume. It appears as though it has been taken from the muppet show. The colors used are accentric and bright, imitating the plushy characters. Nomadic tribes have inspired the blanket trend that includes oversized blanket-like apparel with weaves that are densely textured with velvet and fringes. With faded colors and yarn unevenly showing, this style gives a worn-out vintage feel. Craft is being appreciated and applied to garments to make them look different. The silhouettes look voluminous, shaped like pottery, but the focus is on Indigenous patterns of authentic yarns and woven stiches, ornamented with ceremonial decoration. Indian oriental sensuality has been redefined with gold and rustic charms placed evenly in a spaced out grid-like pattern. They look odd but beautiful on dark bomber jackets and oversized clutches. We are moving away from the time when ready to wear and streetstyle looked monotonous to a season that combines street with luxe, where everyone is trying to create something unique and extraordinary.

AW 18/19: New Dimensions in Apparel
This season, minimalism has new definitions and so does exaggeration. The prevailing style has an overall added volume and voluptuousness. As millennials continue to take over majority of the market, there is a shift in attitudes. The need for interaction and enhanced physical experience is growing. Some styles that cater to these tactile needs this season will include fabric modification such as draping, frills and fringes and oriental embellishments. Due to the environmental conditions and the growing importance of sustainability, faux fur will be a predominant material applied to garments as well as accessories. Inspirations, this season are very closely related with nature, beautiful historic eras, tribes and exotic cultures. “A game of volumes amplified to the extreme: rounded boxiness, limp, longer rectangles and angular shoulders all boost the classics” The added volume in the silhouettes is inspired by the Baroque Era and the muppet show. Inspired by Erwin Wurm’s puffed up sculptures, outer pieces have an extraordinary volume that is distorted in fun, malicious proportions influenced by Wanda Nylon. The comfort of loungewear and sweatpants have become a habit, which has led to increased coziness in wardrobe basics and outerwear, be it long over coats made entirely with fur or short jackets with patches of it. A plush look, being reffered to as the Puffy Monster, much likely to be inspired by characters of the muppet show refletcs an exaggerated use of long faux fur fibres and puffed up outerwear that has a playful aesthetic with a childish Peculiarity. Fringes will be used in mellow, refreshing bright colors along with feathers, raffias and shell. This tribal finesse is inspired by the nomadic tribes and the growing wanderlust. Another culture that will be influencing the styles of this season is Indian Oriental, which will be associated with western, urban sensuality. Inspired by Arpana Rayamjhi, a manhattan based Nepalese designer who shows an elegant, romantic mix of Buddhism and New York through her designs. Indian charms are turned into embellishments on wide shouldered coats and bomber jackets.
