MATERIAL STUDIO AHMEDABAD, INDIA Semester 3, 2017
Designing a research institute with a residential space, through the exploration of a specific material - in this case, Stone.

Location: Navrangpura, Ahmedabad Site Area: 2080 sq.m. The site chosen falls under the university campus of Ahmedabad, surrounded by renowned educational institutes like CEPT university, Vikram Sarabhai Science Centre, Gujarat University, LM College of Pharmacy, and Amdavad ni Gufa. Project Requirements: Laboratory/Workshop Area Reception/Office Meeting Room Storage Space Toilet/Pantry Display Area Library Residential Unit for the professional The studio is based on understanding the technicalities of a material (both its innovations as well as limitations) and exploring it’s aesthetic and experiential qualities along with the construction system, to help in the development of design and space making in architecture. LM College of Pharmacy Site Context The idea was to segregate the administrative part of the building from its workshop space through the development of open spaces of differing scale and nature. This is done by designing a central courtyard that can be used as a transformative space as per the need of the members, while providing the workshop block with two smaller personal courtyards for the purpose of hands-on activities. The blocks have been designed with a parallel wall system with barrel vaults over them and have recessed entries to cut the direct sunlight of the east-west direction. Also, the site has been provided with 3 entires, 2 along the west which serve as a main entry and as service entry for the delievery of materials, and 1 along the north which gives a private access to the residential block.

HOUSING STUDIO VARANASI, INDIA Semester 4, 2018
Designing affordable housing for the lower and middle income group in the one of the most dense and organic fabric of India - Varanasi.

Location: Varanasi, India Site Area: 4040 sq.m. The site befalls in one of the densest and extremely organic fabric of the city and sits among the vernacular architecture of Banaras, with its highly interconnected narrow streets dotted with nodes which act as gathering spaces for the surrounding houses. It is located in a community with mixeduse typology, with the work spaces and shops taking up the ground level while the residents reside on the upper levels. Project Requirements: The housing was to be designed for 60 families, housed in the following three different types of housing units: Type A (20 units): 40-45 sq.m carpet area Purpose: Residential space Type B (30 units): 60-65 sq.m carpet area Purpose: Residential with a commercial space Type C (10 units): 100-110 sq.m carpet ar. Site Context The units have been designed with fenestrations in the east-west facade to create cross ventilation by taking advantage of the prevailing wind direction.
The concept was to maintain the aspect of permeability in the design, something that can be found in the fabric of Banaras through the high level of interconnectivity of its streets. This has been done by designing a non-gated community with two major streets running across the site and through the absence of boundary walls. The main streets running in the site maintain the connectivity of the adjacent main roads with the existing fabric surrounding the site, while the absence of boundary walls not only help to merge the design with the surrounding fabric but also creates space for the development of parking and pathways. Also, every block has been provided with a direct connection to the central open spaces which encourages interaction among the residents and creates an environment of community living, which is one of the core features of Banaras. 12

Redevelopment of a municipal school for pre-primary and primary students, in the dense fabric of the Nava Vadaj locality of Ahmedabad.

Location: Nava Vadaj, Ahmedabad Site Area: 2700 sq.m. The site is located in a lower-middle class community with a dense fabric, and is connected to the Nava Vadaj Circle which is the origin of the concentrated traffic flow. The programme is to redevelop a dilapidated municipal school and give it a new character - one which provides a creative and nurturing environment for students to grow in. Project Requirements: Teaching Blocks: Classrooms (for one to eight grade students) with two sections each. Site Context
Different learning activities opening up into a common courtyard, bringing student interaction and ‘Nature’ into the classrooms and into the education of the students.
A central artery branching out into secondary veins which lead upto open spaces of different scale and nature.
The classrooms on the ground floor have one of its facades openable through a sliding-folding door, to create a semi-open classroom, opening into the courtyards.
The proposed design has been laid out in an axial symmetry with a central spine which connects the entrance foyer of the building to the major open space (provided at the rear end of the site) through a gradual heirarchy of open spaces. This main axis is further branched out by secondary corridors and functions that lead to smaller courtyards which are shared by a cluster of 4-5 classrooms. The courtyard design and their placements have been carried out in a way that encourages interaction between students of different age groups, with the idea of creating a home like environment where the elder children help the younger ones in their way forward by imparting their learnings and values to them.

Introducing the layer of ‘details and technicalities of materials and building construction’ in the designing project of 5th semester’s institutional studio

Location: Nava Vadaj, Ahmedabad Site Area: 2700 sq.m. The studio was focused on the understanding of the technicalities that goes into the construction and execution of a buidling, to explore the details in joineries, structure, services, and to study how different materials can function together while retaining the core conceptual design and aesthetics of the building. The exercise was initiated with resolving of the wall sections to understand the various layers of construction, from foundation to parapet level, with the inclusion of every detail that goes into its making, from the core layers of structure and material to its finishing layers. Once, this crucial language of the building was formed, only then was the final design taken up for the development of the additional stages to prepare the working drawing set.

LUNI, RAJASTHAN Group Members: Charu Mittal Devanshi Gajjar Shrey Tatamiya Luni is a small village near Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The village’s vernacular architecture has almost every house attached with a generous compound area in the front and a large backyard area with the houses placed in the middle. While the compound area is used as shed for the vehicles and storage for the machineries (if any), the backyard area was used as cow sheds and for storage of hay, animal fodder, etc. The houses here are located adjacent to each other with a maximum of 3 rooms a living room, a bedroom and a storage room. These are a single storey structure made out of stone and covered in lime plaster, and have also used dry grass as a roofing material.

DASHASHWAMEDH GHAT, VARANASI Group Members: Nandini Dave Kavisha Shah Dhwani Shah Archi Shah Priyanshi Shah The old city of Varanasi has a very organic development with multi-storey vernacular houses connected by narrow streets which are highly interconnected, and branch out into a lot of hidden routes which can lead from one cluster of houses to another, and are known only to the local residents. The house documented here is of 4 stories, where the ground level is utilised as a working space for making traditional indian sweets, while the upper levels were used up for residential purpose. The ground floor had retained the original vernacular wooden structure, while the rest of the house was renovated with modern composite materials to make it comfortable for living and convenient for maintenance. 31

Dhal ni pol is a part of the walled city of Ahmedabad which has been declared as a ‘World Heritage City’ by UNESCO in the July of 2017. The documentation of the pol houses, which form the vernacular architecture of Ahmedabad, was carried out for the AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation). Designed in a closely-knit fabric that encourages community living and neighborhood interaction, these houses, which were constructed in wood at the time of their making, can be seen in a well-maintained condition with minimum alterations to its material and structural system. Intricately detailed architectural elements, climate responsive designs, building elements that acts as spaces for community interaction are the qualities that add richness to its architecture. 33

S T U D I O E X P LO R AT I O N S The second semester studio was based on learning and exploring space-making using a given set of elements that acted as walls, columns, roofs and staircases of varying scale and nature, to help produce different kind of spaces which would impact the users in different ways.

STAGE 1: To start with the studio,
elements of walls and columns were provided along with a base to explore and create spaces which would captivate the interests of the users along with providing them with different experiences as they move along the spaces.
STAGE 2: Once through with one-
third of the semester, the element of roof, of varying scale and nature, was provided to understand and realise how it can bring about a meaningful and enriching experience to the space, along with making it more realistic and functional in its essence.
STAGE 3: The studio was concluded
by designing a finalised arrangement of all the elements, with staircases to take the space-making exploration to a multi-storeyed level. 40
