PROJECT BRIEF We will follow the design process from research through final execution and create a beautifully designed, well written fully functional cookbook. The end product is a complete, 32 page book, including cover – cleanly executed with excellent craft and void of typos. In addition to the physical book, are (3) – high resolution – digital photos of the cover, contents spread and a typical recipe spread.

SUMMARY My overall book design was meant to have an older feel to it. I feel as though I accomplish this by the color scheme as well as the images used throughout. The lace, to me, feels like something used by grandmothers, which is another feel I was going for in this book. I wanted the concept to be as though the recipes are just like grandma used to make. Another aspect that has an older feel to it is the text on the recipe cards. When looking back at old recipes, they are generally written in a script style and also often hard to read. I thought that the text suits this in a way that imitates that style of writing. I believe that my design is successful and the information that I wanted to convey is clear. The design of the book is fairly simple. There is a pattern when flowing from one page to the next. All together, the book is cohesive and I feel like everything makes sense. When opening the first page, the design is simple. It transitions with the same lace pattern to make it feel put together. It then moves into the intoduction, which has the same feel as the contents page, but a bit more in depth. As the reader turns onto the next pages and getting into the actual recipes, this is where the pattern of display happens. The sections are all designed the same throughout, with a red background and lace pattern at the top. The recipe pages flip from images on the left or right and the recipe on the right or left as well. I feel as though switching up the sides of the photos and recipes is important to add a slight variation to the viewer’s eye. One of the concepts that I added at the end of the book was a recipe section where the owner of the book could possibly add in new recipes that they find. I liked adding this idea because not all books have the recipes you may need, so adding in new ones is always essential when you’re a baker. After the critique, there were some slight changes that I made. One of these was the book title design. Initially, the title was on top of a white band that stretched across the whole cover. This was not quite what I wanted to begin with, but left it for the time being. I wanted to make sure the text was visible, therefore the white band was added. But, now it is a smaller rectangular white box with a fancy corner applied. I feel as though the corners match the feel of the book with the lace that is throughout. Another change that I made was the bullets on the beginning pages. Before, they were basic, black bullets, which were too plain and didn’t really match the book design all too well. So, I changed

SUMMARY the bullets to a thin, diamond shape. Then, also made them the same red color in my color scheme. I think that the diamond shape goes better with the design because it compiments the lace that it throughout the whole book. On the blank recipe card pages, I had two cards on each page for four pages. I felt like this was not very strong and needed to change that in some way. So, I went ahead and put the card at the top of the page and changed the ribbon to be light tan in order to be written in easier. Then, I added ruled lines under the card for where notes about the recipe could be written. The card itself would not have enough room for directions on them, so the notes section is where something like that would go. Other slight changes where photo color corrections and small adjustments here and there. Overall, I think that the design of my book is well thought out and makes sense. Most Polish baking recipes are from many years ago, so the book reflects that in it’s style.
