PROJECT BRIEF In this project students will be required to work through several exercises to create a framework for a mobile application. Students will be required to show a cumulative understanding of typographic design. New opportunities for exploring hierarchical grids will be explored.

EXPLORE The first portion of my research was an exploration through the Town of Fredonia in New York. While walking, I found various locations throughout the town and documented my journey through taking various photographs. I took pictures of items that I found interesting or locations that I wanted to include within the application that I would create.
4
RESEARCH The second portion of my research involved more detailed information about specific locations on my journey. I decided to include examples of application pages for Moonstruck Design and the Fredonia Opera House. These two places seemed like something interesting to further look into and learn more information about them. I wanted to include both new and historical features within the town, Moonstruck Design is a more recent location and the Fredonia Opera House is, of course, older with a longer and more developed history. For the Moonstruck Design page, I researched background information about the business and the woman who runs the store. The information is from the website, moonstruckdesign.com as well as their Facebook page. As for the Fredonia Opera House information, I had researched on their official website, fredopera.com. On their site I found historical information as well as basic tellings of events, tickets , volunteer work, memberships and sponsors. Within the history section on the site are photos as well as textual information.

APPLICATION DESIGN The initial start of the application design began with constructing the map. I wanted to incorporate circles as my path for the roadways to have a footstep feel. I also think circles are a shape that have a fun look to them and that is another feel I wanted to give off in my design. Walking through a town can be enjoyable and I wanted the application to reflect that. I based my map from looking at an overview on Google Maps of Fredonia. E Risley St Leverett St

APPLICATION DESIGN I took the circular concept and incorporated them all throughout the other application page designs. The title font that I used felt very bubbly and rounded, so I thought it worked well with the circular concept. The icons that I created for the contact section, which is seen in two of the page examples, have rounded edges as well in order to keep with the theme. The buttons within the application would be considered as “bubble wrap” where if one was to press the button it would “pop” and become and outline rather than a filled in circle. The color scheme came about through trials of coloration. I started with the blue color first because I enjoyed the look of it. So, I wanted to find colors that would possibly work well with it. The neutral grey color for the background of the map came next because I felt it complimented the brighter coloring of the blue. I had a hot pink color instead of green at first, but did not like that as much. It seemed too overbearing. The green seemed to fit the cooler tone of the blue, so I stuck with it. The overall coloring of the application has a fun look to it, which is also what I was trying to bring across to the viewer.

VOLUNTEER
The opening of the FREDONIA OPERA HOUSE was in April of 1891. It was a gala affair at which smartly dressed guests from throughout the region were treated to a rousing performance of Josephine, Empress of the French. The evening also was the realization of a dream for Village officials whose plans for an imposing municipal building overlooking Barker Commons (the Village Square) had, from the beginning, included an Opera House. This was a dream shared by many late 19th-century communities where it was felt that, with the coming of the railroads, their relatively isolated citizens could now have access to performing arts GALLERY

EVALUATION Overall, one of the strongest features within my design is the color scheme. It works well with my concept and is pleasant looking to the eye. The whole look of my design is cohesive when going from page to page and gives off a steady flow. The concept of the buttons is another aspect that works well because they are fun and become more interactive if one were to “pop” them. The look of the map is something else that is working nicely in my design. It incorporates various elements used throughout the entire application which makes the design look more complete. There were minor changes that needed to be done when speaking in the critique. The biggest change was the look of the History page for the Fredonia Opera House. It had been a full body of text, which seemed to be too much. So, I went back in and cut down the amount of text and inserted a gallery option, which is like the one on the Moonstruck Design page. A few smaller details that were addressed are the line spacing between the text was increased as well as the point size. The contact symbols were reduced in size to have some breathing room from the circular edges. Another change was the increase the kerning within the titles because the typeface used was quite condenced and became a legibility problem. Something that I would do differently within this design is to provide more examples of page designs to showcase more of my application. I do believe what I have now is enough to show the basic idea, however I feel like I could go even further in depth with some of the concepts. I could show what the gallery could possibly look like within the different pages, I could show what would happen when you pressed on a contact button. These may be small items, but I feel like it would further get the ideas across. Also, I would perhaps increase the point size even by a little bit more on the bodies of text and increase the line spacing a small amount more as well. I’m unsure if I completely like the home screen of my application. I do like that I included the circle theme, however, I don’t particularly enjoy the start button that much. I would probably go back in and think of a different way I could start up the application.
