THERE ARE COUNTLESS FRAGMENTS FLOATING AROUND MY HEAD. THOSE FRAGMENTS ARE PARTS AND PIECES FROM MY LIFE EXPERIENCES: PEOPLE I MET, FOOD I ATE, BOOKS I READ, AND CONVERSATIONS I HAD. WHEN I START A PROJECT, LIVING MECHANISMS IN MY HEAD AUTOMATICALLY SYNTHESIZE AN IDEA FROM THOSE FRAGMENTS. EACH PROJECT REFLECTS MYSELF AND EVERY FRAGMENT IN MY LIFE.

ANIMAL & VEGETABLE
01 10 Co u r s e Visual Communications Lab Instructor Hunter Wimmer Semester Fall 2011 Ke y w o rd s Wholesome / Nourishing / Friendly
Desc ripti o n My interest in food and culture led me to develop this project around the question, “Why do people become vegans?” There are many reasons why people choose to give up meat, but I wanted to focus my research on the rise of veganism in society and how vegans live in a mostly carnivorous culture. I designed this book for people who do not fully understand veganism to help vegans and non-vegans more easily coexist. I focused the book’s design around appealing images of food, vegetable, and people to educate readers in an approachable way.

PIGEONS & BREAD BOWLS
02 10 Co u r s e Book Arts Instructor Macy Chadwick Semester Fall 2011 Ke y w o rd s Rusty / Quirky / Grey
Desc ripti o n This project’s objective was to creatively structure a book around a unique story. I made a book about pigeons using two pieces of cardboard and a thin piece of craft paper. I then made an accordion binding with a die cut-through on each page. To gather ideas, I sat out in the sun and observed pigeons. Pigeons are urban birds with interesting lifestyles. I really noticed them for the first time when I moved to San Francisco, because there are always flocks of them roaming around the city. While watching them closely, I saw that they are adapting to urban life by pecking at anything edible. I created a fictional pigeon character named Grey. In my neighborhood, Fisherman’s Wharf, pigeons eat bread bowls that tourists throw away. Sometimes they fight with tourists, stealing food from their hands. Other times, they fight with seagulls over the bread bowls.

03 10 Co u r s e Type Experiments Instructor Stan Zienka Semester Fall 2011 Ke y w o rd s Scientific / Technical / Intricate
Desc ripti o n This project was about getting out and seeing the world around me from a different point of view. I went outside, camera in hand, thinking about a story for the book. I had a flash idea that San Francisco has a very diverse food culture. I thought that it would be fun to explore this, so I searched for ethnic food and ate it without knowing what the ingredients were. During the process of gathering contents for my book, I found myself observing food more closely than I ever had before. For each item of food, I tried to analyze its smell, shape, various colors, and, especially, its taste. Before eating, I wrote down my expectations and noted my experiences afterwards.

KIDS & TYPOGRAPHY
04 10 Co u r s e Motion Graphic Instructor Ryan Berkey Semester Fall 2013 Ke y w o rd s Colorful / Fun / Cute
Desc ripti o n The goal of this project was to make a motion graphic trailer for a design book. I selected my favorite design book called Hyperactivitypography from A to Z. This is an activity book for people who want to learn about type. It uses fictional characters who engage readers in the learning process. In the trailer, these characters are animated to tell potential buyers that this book makes learning typography fun. Even people with kids can develop typography skills by completing the activities in this book.

LIGHT & PLASTIC LENS
05 10 Co u r s e Type Systems Instructor Scott Tong Semester Spring 2011 Ke y w o rd s Blurry / Low Resolution / Dreamy
Desc ripti o n This project was about exploring one of San Francisco’s subcultures and using these observations to make a book. I went with the San Francisco Toy Camera Meetup Group, a Bay Area subculture that is passionate about analog photography. Christine Zona, the group’s organizer, introduced me to their imperfect photography. In the digital world, people can easily add filters from mobile apps to make pictures simulate film photography. These people, however, appreciate the true beauty of happy accidents where light is distorted by a plastic lens onto the film’s negative. I wanted to make this book for people who have never experienced the analog world of a plastic lens’ effect on light.

COOKING & RUNNING
06 10 Co u r s e Type Composition Instructor Lian Ng Semester Fall 2010 Ke y w o rd s Soft / Delicate / Interpretive
Desc ripti o n This project was about making a typography-based book cover. The aim was to take some popular books and reinventing their covers. I chose two books. One is a Haruki Murakami book called “What I Talk about When I Talk about Running”. Since the book talks about running and training for a marathon, the image of footprint is used to symbolize the hardships and it is merged with the name of the book. The other book is by Julie Powell called “Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen”. An integral part of cooking is measuring and to represent that, the universal shape of a measurement cup is taken to depict this great story about the kitchen.

HOME & HARD TIMES
07 10 Co u r s e Integrated Communications Instructor Hunter Wimmer Semester Spring 2012 Ke y w o rd s Sorrowful / Melancholy / Intense
Desc ripti o n The goal of this project was to create an identity for a fictional film festival in honor of a director of our choosing. The festival had to represent a specific theme from the director’s movies. I selected Jim Sheridan, an Irish film maker. My festival was called “Not Far from Home.” The movies featured in the festival were specific to Sheridan’s theme about family bonds during tough times. I conveyed the heaviness of the hard times depicted in the films with a series of poignant photographs that tied in appropriately to each movie’s plot.

MEDIUM & MELODY
08 10 Co u r s e Type Experiments Instructor Stan Zienka Semester Fall 2011 Ke y w o rd s Transparent / Hazy / Distorted
Desc ripti o n This experimental project involved projecting images onto a wall based on a song of our choice and our interpretation of its meaning. I designed various transparent acetate sheets with type and other transparent objects for use in a projector. I selected “Let’s Get lost” by Elliott Smith because I like the overwhelmed feeling in his voice. The way he sings about “going to find a beautiful place to get lost” and “burning every bridge that I cross” makes me feel sad, but also somehow hopeful, because, at the very least, Elliott might be getting lost in a beautiful place. In this project, I used maps, arrows and pointing fingers to interpret getting lost.

ELLIOTT HAS BEEN DEPRESSED ALL HIS LIFE. "LET'S GET LOST" REVEALS HIS ISOLATION, THE DEPTH OF HIS LONELINESS AND HIS REALIZATION THAT HE WILL NEVER GET CLOSE TO ANYONE. ELLIOTT IS ALIENATED AND HIS LIFE IS PERVADED BY A QUIET DESPAIR, LONGING FOR A HUMAN CONNECTIONS THAT WILL NEVER BE ACHIEVED. THE WORD "LET'S" IN THE SONG TITLE IRONICALLY IMPLIES COMPANIONSHIP, BUT THE PHRASE "BURNING EVERY BRIDGE THAT I CROSS" EXPRESSES HIS DESIRE TO ESCAPE FROM WHAT IS UNBEARABLE, LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS. THE LINE, "TO FIND SOME BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO GET LOST" SUGGESTS THAT BEING ALONE IS A KIND OF FREEDOM AND A PLACE OF SOLITARY REFUGE FOR A LONELY SOUL.

09 10 Co u r s e Nature of Identity Instructor Hunter Wimmer Semester Spring 2013 Ke y w o rd s Sharp / Pleasant / Social
Desc ripti o n This project was about rebranding a dead, defunct or dying brand. We had to put forward a new service or product that related to the core of the brand we chose. I chose the Diners club. The Diners Club is a charge card company that was created for frequent travelers. I expanded the Diners Club to also give exclusive access to business travelers. I redesigned its logo using two arrows facing right and left to symbolize coming and going. The curvy negative space in the logo creates the letters “D” and “C” for Diners Club

Desc ripti o n This project was my MFA thesis at the Academy of Art University. Students needed to select an issue and use graphic design to solve the problem. My thesis was Pact an acronym for Program for Alternative Cardiovascular Therapy. Pact is a non-profit organization that helps members to make long lasting changes in their lifestyles. Our objective is to reduce the chance of heart attack or stroke by lowering total blood cholesterol levels that put individuals at risk for a cardiac event. Pact helps members to integrate scientifically proven heart healthy methods of diet, exercise, and community support into their lifestyles.
