Welcome to Angel Fire, a place to make “forever” memories. Nestled in the Moreno Valley of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Angel Fire is the perfect mountain oasis. A place for an altitude adjustment, to take deep breaths, to refresh your soul or to seek adventure. Over the past two years, during the pandemic, we’ve had to put most things on hold for the safety and well-being of our locals and our guests. Moving into 2022, planned events are making a come-back. Miles of Smiles The High Country is known the world over for snow sports but a best-kept secret is golf.Attitude at altitude’ is one of the big perks of mile-highand-more elevations.

Angel Fire championship and disc golf is a best kept secret

Located at 8,600 feet in elevation, Angel Fire Country Club in high desert summer offers cooling breezes, endless sunshine, the occasional monsoon and gorgeous golf. Plus the balls fly so far at altitude – it’s addicting. People come from Texas, California, all over the U.S. and Europe — some who discover it during the winter when they ski, and then come back to golf.

GOLF AND DISC GOLF Perched amid the mountain-high valley of Angel Fire, the par 72, 6,653-yard 18-hole course is open, as is the redesigned PDGA Approved Disc Golf 18-hole course, located at Agua Fria Peak, via the Chile Express chairlift. The championship course features immaculately groomed greens and magnificent views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that easily tests the skills of athe best golfers, while at the same time its gently rolling terrain and tees make the course enjoyable for all players.

DISC GOLF Enjoy amazing mountain views and challenge yourself with the 18-hole disc golf course located at the summit of the mountain. Angel Fire’s disc golf is free to play but requires a lift ticket or season pass to access the chairlift. Hole number one is located straight ahead off the chairlift across from The Chapel. The course includes both amateur and pro tee pads, and takes you through a scenic hike at 10,000+ feet elevation. The last hole brings you back to the central summit area.

EQUIPMENT AND MORE Besides driving ranges, putting greens and chipping area, the pro shop offers a full range of golf apparel, equipment and lessons/clinics for men, women and juniors. Beginning in May or June, riders of every level hit the trails through La Lama Hills and the Sangre de Cristo mountains for one-hour slow-paced trails, two- and three-hour rides through Cebolla Mesa, Enchanted Forest, and Red River Fish Hatchery.

The lake is stocked with rainbow lake trout throughout the summer – perfect for a family fish fry. On the east end of the lake there is a floating dock for fishing or just relaxing.

Boats, stand-up paddle boards, pedal boats, two-person kayaks and fishing equipment are available for rent. Angel Fire Fishing Permits are required and can be obtained at the Boat House. Permits also available at the Membership Office at The Country Club (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday) when the Lake House is closed. Permits must be worn at all times.) Stand-Up Paddle Board Age minimum 12 years old, strong swimmers, must wear life vest, leash and whistle when on-water; stand on paddle board only on water; enter/exit in designated area next to Monte Verde Lake Office.

Pedal Boat Age minimum 4 years old, be able to swim and must wear a life vest. No fishing from a pedal boat.

BRING YOUR OWN Yes! You are welcome to bring your own non-motorized watercraft. No permit fee for boats under 15 feet. To store your boat, pay a seasonal registration fee in Monte Verde Lake Office, 25 Lakeview Park Drive. Call 575-377-9971 for details.

SAFETY AND POLICIES

WEATHER

Lightning is common in Angel Fire, especially during monsoon season. If you see lightning or hear thunder, immediately return to shore and seek shelter. Wind can also create a hazard on the lake and anything more than a breeze can make boating very difficult, even dangerous. If the wind picks up, return to shore.

• No Alcohol – alcoholic beverages are not permitted at Monte Verde Lake.

• Dogs – must be on leash on shore but allowed to swim in the lake and ride on boats off leash.

• Whistles required on water to notify others in case of emergency.

• Fires – charcoal grills and campfires not permitted on Monte Verde Lake.

• No Swimming – there is no lifeguard. The water is extremely cold. Check in with the Lake Attendant on arrival and sign liability waiver.

• No Wake Lake – boats with motors and devices like jet skis are not allowed. Trolling motors are permitted.

alking or hiking the trails in and around Angel Fire is spectacular. Ranging from easy to expert, you’ll see wildlife, flowers, cliffs and bowers, and finally own the true joy of Rocky Mountain high altitude. All trails in local public lands of Carson National Forest are open to hikers and runners for all levels of ability, including the scenic Williams Lake Trail that continues onto the Wheeler Peak Trail, leading to the top of New Mexico’s tallest mountain. Other National Forest trails to try near Angel Fire are the South Boundary Trail, a 23-mile hike from just south of Angel Fire to right outside Taos (shuttles recommended for returning), and the Elliot Barker Trail, with most open to horseback riders. Mountain bikers are welcome everywhere except designated wilderness areas and some trails are open to motorized users, too. (See the Ride Responsibly info box on page 19.)

These local faves are located just behind Angel Fire town Visitor Center. They are relatively easy, very pretty and in shaded wooded areas.

The trails start at the parking area of Monte Verde Lake, just off Mountain View Boulevard.

This 2.5 mile loop trail near Angel Fire, is in a great forest setting, primarily used for hiking, walking, trail running and nature trips.

This 7.1 mile lightly trafficked out-andback trail near Angel Fire features beautiful wild flowers. This advanced hiking trail spans over 2,000 vertical feet, from the base of Angel Fire Resort to the summit. It’s primarily used for hiking, walking, running, and mountain biking. Leashed dogs allowed.

Both seasoned downhillers as well as less-experienced riders appreciate the resort’s long-term commitment to building one of the best bike parks in North America.

Just FYI to bike newbies, bike park trails ride with very little pedaling as riders flow downhill for the vast majority of a trail. When Angel Fire riders reach the bottom of a trail, the bike is placed back on the Chile Express chairlift and they ride the Chile Express back up to the summit.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial David Westphall Veterans Foundation

ngel Fire is home to the nation’s first monument to honor veterans of the Vietnam War. On U.S. Hwy 64, just north of Angel Fire, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial features a chapel, visitor center and museum, a veterans’ walk and a “Huey” helicopter on display. The Memorial is operating at 100 percent capacity. Visitors Center/Museum and the David Westphall Veterans Foundation (DWVF) Gift Shop are open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Chapel and grounds are open 24/7. The original name for the memorial was Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel. It was built by Victor and Jeanne Westphall in 1971 as a memorial to their son, Marine 1st Lt. David Westphall, who died in Vietnam in 1968. Special events to memorialize veterans and active duty servicemembers include Labor Day Bricklaying and the Run For The Wall Memorial Day Motorcycle Ride. Up to 2,000 people attended the bricklaying this year. Each brick bears the name of a living or deceased veteran service member, their military branch and the years they served (a brick with no end date means they are still active duty). Bricks are available for purchase by anyone wanting to honor a military service member or veteran. About 5,000 bricks line the memorial. COVID-19 Update: As of July 22, 2021, masks mandated only for those unvaccinated.

Continue on U.S. 64 to U.S. Interstate 25, into the city of Ratón.

gradual descent onto the mesa and the world-renowned Folsom Man Site and museum, where a discovery of bones and fluted spear points push back the existence of man in North America to 8,800 BC. Four-corners National Monument: Take NM Hwy 325 south to the Capulin Volcano National Monument, active 60,000 years ago. Check out the crater and panoramic views of New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. Leaving the village of Capulin, turn right to U.S. 64 toward Ratón. Old Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center & Museum: At Ratón, head south on U.S. 25 to Springer’s Old Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center and Museum. Backtrack 3 miles on U.S. 25 to the exit for Cimarrón, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire, the 19-mile stretch begins the climb back into the mountains. Turn back onto U.S. 64 and follow the road back to the Moreno Valley and Angel Fire. Plan to return to spend more time in your favorite places of the Old West – and enjoy!

Wild Rivers Recreation Area The Wild Rivers Recreation Area is located within the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument and along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River and Red River Wild and Scenic River. The Wild Rivers area is rich with history, rugged beauty and enticing recreational opportunities. A backcountry byway, visitor center, campgrounds, picnic facilities and trails are available for visitors.

Several spectacular overlooks are found here, including La Junta Point, one of the most dramatic views in the state, overlooking the confluence of the Red River and the Rio Grande – and it is wheelchair accessible. At high elevations the cool, green and often wet forest is bursting with wildflowers near the rivers and streams. In summer look for the huge, native, blue columbine

flowers near rock outcroppings and in wet areas. Look for Bighorn sheep up into rocky areas above treeline. Located about 9 o’clock on the circle, Arroyo Hondo is a tiny village of old adobes, a market, a bar and ranchos along the Río Hondo, with a rolling high desert mesa stretching toward the Río Grande Gorge. It includes popular fishing spots, as well as the historic John Dunn Bridge.

Balloons over Angel Fire A local delight in hot air flight More than 35 hot-air balloons float gracefully up into the cool skies of the Moreno Valley every Father's Day weekend (this year Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 17-19). BOAF is one of the few high mountain hot-air balloon events in the country. Weekend festivities include mass ascensions, a Saturday night Balloon Glow, vendor market and pilot competitions. New this year, the exciting, high octane, family-friendly Drone Racing Exhibition, 8-10 a.m. each day. Some of the fastest drone pilots in the world live here in New Mexico. See SWPR (Southwest Pod Racing). Want to be part of a chase crew? Balloon pilots always seek additional help for inflating, chasing and deflating the balloons each day. Be at the launch field any or all of the mornings of Mass Balloon Ascensions no later than 6:30 a.m. to volunteer assisting a pilot, in return, most pilots offer a ride for your help! This is a great way to find out more about the sport of hot-air ballooning and have a fun experience.

Morning Star owners/ operators Stuart and Liliana Hanold opened the café in the popular Elk Horn Lodge last September 2021. Offering the super popular Ski Burger and local American, Mexican fare, they ramp it up Friday and Saturday nights with Italian dinner specials.

Mikuna Grill is the only restaurant in the area that serves a fusion of Peruvian - Southwestern Cuisine. Established in 2017, Mikuna Grill started from the ground up and within just two months, it was established and has proven itself to be an Angel Fire staple for years now.

Breakfasts start at 9 a.m., including delicious huevos rancheros, pancakes, omelettes, smothered breakfast burritos and more. Huge burgers and daily specials like pulled pork sandwiches, meat loaf plates and pies for dessert – all are making big waves in Angel Fire fare. The couple relocated to Angel Fire after various restaurant stints in Colorado. Chef Liliana actually offered the original Ski Burger in Eagle Nest, before Albuquerque native Stuart entered the picture. They later relocated the Ski Burger café to Angel Fire. Since then, after two children and a Foursquare Ministry in Colorado, good food and fellowship brought them back home to Angel Fire. “Come as a guest, leave as a friend,” is one of Liliana’s favorite Facebook posts. They mean it and after one visit, you will too. Morning Star is a true BFF!

The second annual Mimosas on Main Street will be held again

on Father’s Day, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on June 18, the Sunday of the Balloons Over Angel Fire weekend. All North Angel Fire Drive (AKA Bill Burgess Blvd.) will be closed to accommodate vendors and music all day. Last year 35 vendors set up tents, so this year the village expects even more vendors. Mikuna’s will be open and mimosas will be flowing just like last year’s big bash. Jazmin lists her last name only by its first letter, M, maybe because she’s so busy. Since opening Mikuna Grill in 2017, she opened three other businesses: The Bakery & Café (3420 Mountain View Blvd, 575-377-3992); the Ice

Cream, Candy & Gift Shop (11 Halo Pine Terrace, 575-377-1010) and a cleaning service. Though unavailable for comment, her website puts her life’s work in perspective: “My love for my family and the recipes that bring me back to my childhood have continued to push me to share these same experiences with my community,” Jazmin says online. “I have taken my culinary education and all of my wonderful experiences at the dinner table with my children, and I have translated them for all of Angel Fire to enjoy. I hope that you will come in and taste the love that I have for my family, for Peru and for Angel Fire in every dish!” Bon appetit!

he Angel Fire Studio Art Tour happens annually on the last Saturday and Sunday in September. After a two-year delay due to the pandemic shut downs, the artists are eager to welcome you back! This year’s Studio Art Tour is scheduled for Sept. 24-25. A tradition in every region of New Mexico, the Studio Art Tour is a self-guided road trip to visit numerous art galleries, studios, businesses and artists’ homes. Pick the places you want to browse, shop and enjoy! Angel Fire’s studio tour includes artists in Angel Fire, Black Lake, Eagle Nest, Taos Canyon and Valle Escondido. At press time, this year again there will be up to 25 locations with 36-plus local artists ready to greet you and share their talents. There will be art for sale, artist workshops, music and more. Fine art, artisan craftsman-

ship, metal art, yard art, fabric art, wood art, furniture art, crafts, culinary – the list goes on – so many genres of art are represented. A map-brochure will be available at the Angel Fire Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Center, located in downtown Angel Fire at 3407 Mountain View Blvd./aka U.S. Hwy 434, as well as at visitor centers in Santa Fe and Ratón. The weekend of the tour, look for arrows on the roads to direct you to the studios, homes and businesses, as well as numbered signs in front of each destination. You’ll want to spend the entire weekend in Angel Fire to complete the tour. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Moreno Valley during fall foliage as you travel into the mountains and canyons finding the various locations with art, art art!

Magical Mountain Originals Local singer-songwriter Ry Taylor (pictured center) grew up on the Philmont Scout Ranch in Northern New Mexico – he literally grew up singing around campfires. This hugely popular guy does weekly solo gigs – Thursdays at Angel Fire Country Club’s Elements, Saturdays at Village Haus, Sundays at the new Angel Fire RV park and Tuesdays at El Jefe; then Fridays and Saturdays at Red River’s brewery, Bull O’ The Woods and top of the ski area. In Taos, he does The Alley Cantina, Gutters Bowling Alley, Taos Mesa Brewery’s Taos Ale House, Rolling Still and maybe Taos Plaza Live, among others. He also leads his band, Ry Taylor and the Sidetrips, once or twice a month hereabouts. On stages since a teen, Ry’s played all around the Enchanted Circle and in neighboring Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas. He studied music at Texas’ Levelland college and has signed to Colorado’s Howlindog records. Ry’s father, Rod Taylor of The Rifters, named his son after roots Musician Ry Cooder, but Ry Taylor got it all, including the Grateful Dead, The Band, Little Feat and Van Morrison. Taylor calls his music “acoustic groove, Americana, Latin jazz, alternative rock and then some … I like to listen to everything,” he says. Initially panicked by the pandemic – with only three gigs in 2019 he worried for his chosen way of life. But no more. “I think the rest of the world missed music so much I’m busier than ever before,” he says, grateful for the incredible turnaround. See more at rytaylormusic.net.
