A nod to her legacy After 22 years serving families in Taos, Dr. Sylvia Villarreal, M.D., hung up her stethoscope and officially retired at the end of 2021. Holy Cross Medical Center stepped up to take the reins at her clinic, the Taos Clinic for Children and Youth, where 30 percent of her patients were children with special needs. As a nod to her legacy, she was chosen to grace the cover of Well Taos 2022. Now that she’s retired, Dr. V will be spending more time with family, traveling and fly-fishing. She also hopes to revisit the penguin research study in Patagonia that she worked on in the 1980s. “When you’re a pediatrician, you’re part of the community. It’s an ecological work... you’re sort of working with who lives here, how many generations they’ve been here, etc. They’ve helped me and I’ve helped them,” said Dr. V. The Taos News wants to salute and say “thank you” to this remarkable woman who has left an indelible mark on the children and families in our community and will be sorely missed. Alternative medicine: What works for you? Local practitioners provide herbs, hyperbaric therapy, detox and colonics BY JENNIFER MOONEY
R
ob Hawley and his sister Tina Hahn created Taos Herb Company in Taos in 1981 with a vision of creating effective herbal products made from locally sourced medicinal herbs. “While there are many useful and effective alternative therapies available, the single most import aspect of caring for oneself is being well informed about the nature of your health condition and how the many different products and systems may affect your condition. The key is to be well informed about the therapies and medications you are considering using as well as keeping your health care providers in the loop so that they are fully aware of what you are doing in addition to their guidance,” Rob Hawley said. Taos County includes a wide range of doctors who specialize in alternative medicine including; naturopaths, osteopaths, herbalists, homeopaths, acupuncturists, chiropractors and specialists in Chinese and oriental medicine. Hawley provides a list of practitioners in his shop. Also, see page 52. Along, with Hawley, meet two locals who implore us to take a new look at how we treat ourselves. since 2003. She is a nationally board certified colon hydro therapist with full credentials in all treatments offered. “We provide hyperbaric oxygen using state of the art equipment. We use a low pressure chamber. I thought that I would be working with altitude sickness — for tourists, but that is not the case. Most of my clients have had traumatic brain injuries or are recovering from strokes or respiratory issues,” Harder said. Enter herbalist Cinnamon Bird of Cinnamon’s Botanicals. Bird added, “I believe in plant and natural medicine, I do as much as I can naturally. I ask people lots of questions such as if they do have a physician and are taking medications. I feel strongly about certain herbs and what I know the outcome will be.” Hawley, Harder and Bird offer viable options for what Bird says “what ails you.” From Bird’s point-of-view: “I ask people what is going on in their gut and in their life. I lean towards holistic all the continues on page 8

way. When you come in, I have a lot of dried plants and you can make your own teas. I have done the tincture form. I also have topicals,” Bird said. Harder offers both colonics and hydrotherapy. Barder cites the practices of renowned Dr. Max Gerson that have led her own career and treatment modalities. Harder explains the benefits of the hyperbaric treatment. “The concept is that you are flooding the body with oxygen. We squeeze the oxygen into the liquid plasma of the blood which is why is has so many positive benefits,” Harder said. And Barder’s colonics treatment is very much about detox. “We use purified filtered water. We use an FDA registered medical device for colon hydrotherapy. This works for anybody who needs to detox,” Barder said. Taos Herb has aided people for decades. Bird is very much about plants and the benefit that they can have in our lives. Harder has worked with a range of individuals including cancer patients.

Telemedicine: Connecting patients with providers BY DENA MILLER
T
he concept of telehealth has been part of the U.S. healthcare system for decades — think EMS workers transmitting electrocardiograms via their radio systems — but at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic it became a primary and comprehensive means of communication between providers and patients. While many patients have since returned to in-office visits, telemedicine appointments remain widely available through the region’s medical and mental health practices. Those with smart phones, tablets or computers receive either a text or an email including a link to be opened at a pre-designated date and time via their provider’s chosen HIPPA-compliant secure medical platform. “A telehealth appointment is not merely a phone call with your provider,” emphasized Kelly Crowfeather, administrator of Family Practice Associates of Taos located at 630 Paseo del Pueblo Sur. “The appointment requires you have access to both video and audio,” which ensures you are receiving optimal care and which is also required by insurance companies who have promulgated new regulations for a trend that is here to stay. NextCare Urgent Care of Taos is part of an 11-state network of walk-in medical care facilities, nine of which including New Mexico, offer online Virtual Care clinics. Their website, nextcare. com, guides patients seamlessly through the application process and assigns them a place in the queue: exactly like their physical clinics, but no clipboards loaded with forms or uncomfortable seating required. Clinic for Children and Youth — feature telehealth options, particularly for pediatric care. In telehealth appointments, “We can do everything but touch the patient,” said Dr. Stephen Lucero. Visit holycrossmedicalcenter.org for details. Mental and behavioral health providers are particularly excited about the telehealth component of their practices, said Eric Mares, chief clinical director at Taos Behavioral Health. “About 20 percent of our clients have remained with telemedicine appointments after we re-instituted visits in person,” he said, noting that only 2-5 percent of their approximately 3,000 clients opted for telehealth prior to COVID-19. For children, the center has implemented innovative telehealth activities such as group virtual museum or zoo tours from across the country, or do-at-home arts and crafts projects. “A staff member will homedeliver supplies earlier that day and, later, join the kids online in executing the project together,” engaging the children with each other. Whatever the age of the client, however, those who opt for telemedicine feel secure engaging in their “safe space,” Mares explained, while giving therapists an understanding of the client’s home environment: a valuable tool. “Most of our patients at family practice do opt for in-person office visits,” Crowfeather noted, but said it remains a viable alternative for those who can’t make the trip. Keep in mind, however, “There are conditions that can only be addressed by seeing your physician in person.” If the safety and convenience of telehealth appointments sounds appealing, be sure to check with your primary care physician to see if it’s right for you. 2022-2023 MEDICAL + WELLNESS DIRECTORY

Pandemic casts spotlight on local unity and leadership BY VIRGINIA L. CLARK
E
ntering the 2022 new year, Taos County has been enjoying a relatively robust response to the COVID-19 pandemic, now now entering its third year. As of press time, the county has an 89 percent vaccination rate of its 26,893 population — New Mexico’s third highest percent-vaccination rate next to McKinley and Los Alamos counties, both at 93 percent. Case numbers are increasing locally and across the state since the appearance of the Omicron variant.
Community response “Taos has done very well overall during this pandemic with some of the highest vaccination rates in the state and good adherence to public health measures such as masking
indoors and testing,” Alana Benjamin, M.D., of taoscovidtaskforce.com. Benjamin is a family medicine physician, with Taos Whole Health Integrative Care, located at 1331 Maestas Road in Taos. “I am so grateful to all of the members of the Taos Community Medical COVID Task Force who have been working incredibly hard over the past two years to use our limited resources as efficiently as possible to keep our community safe.” Benjamin said predicting progress of the Omicron variant mid-January is almost impossible due to the incredible transmissibility causing soaring case rates, plus the recent New Year’s holiday celebrations. Nonetheless, the World Health Organicontinues on page 16

zation Incident Manager Abdi Mahamud told Reuters on Jan. 4, a “decoupling” may be happening. “More evidence is emerging that the Omicron coronavirus variant is … causing milder symptoms than previous variants. What we are seeing now is … the ‘decoupling’ between the soaring cases and low deaths,” he said.
Immunization rates high Taos County’s high vaccination rate decreases the threat to our medical systems, compared to counties and countries where a large percentage of the population remains unvaccinated. As of mid-December 2021, Taos County residents (aged 18 and older) were 87 percent fully vaccinated and 99 percent-partially vaccinated, according to GIS Analyst Tim Corner. Younger Taoseños (aged 12–17), were 56 percent fully vaccinated and 66 percent were partially vaccinated; while 10 percent of Taos children aged 5-11 had been fully vaccinated, with 22 percent partially vaccinated. These percentages are even greater with each passing month.
Holy Cross’s exceptional leadership Holy Cross Medical Center’s (HCMC) response to COVID-19 is a huge community benefit. Holy Cross notes that at the moment, hospitals are experiencing very high patient volumes, combined with staffing and supply shortages. “As a result of these issues, hospitals are experiencing longer than normal wait times. Please be patient with hospital staff as they do all they can to provide the care you need.” The Taos News reported Holy Cross Medical Center activated crisis standards of care on Jan. 14. “Holy Cross was ahead of the curve when the first round of COVID-19 vaccines were distributed,” HCMC says in its 2021 yearin-review online. “The team had already prepared for community-wide storage and distribution of the vaccine by ordering and installing the ultra-low-temperature freezers needed to properly store the vaccines. In early January, the hospital was working closely with the Town of Taos, Taos County, Taos Pueblo,
local healthcare providers, and many volunteers to establish a vaccine distribution site, first on the hospital campus, then at the Taos Middle School, and finally at the Sagebrush Inn. By Feb. 4, Holy Cross had distributed 1,500 doses of the vaccine, and by May, Taos County was one of the most vaccinated counties in New Mexico. “It was an amazing team accomplishment with David Elliot, Hospital Emergency Response Coordinator, coordinating the efforts,” Holy Cross adds (Elliot was awarded the Taos News 2021 Citizen of the Year Award). “We are proud to have David Elliot on our team, and we are grateful for the amazing efforts of everyone involved.”
Local nonprofits step up Besides coordinating the hospital response, Elliot is principal emergency manager and regional emergency preparedness coordinator of the New Mexico Region 1 Healthcare Coalition of San Juan, McKinley, Cibola, Rio Arriba, Taos, Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Colfax, Mora and San Miguel counties. Elliot notes that ECCOAD (Enchanted Circle Community Organizations Active in Disaster) works across all sectors, “including government, nonprofit, philanthropic, medical, big and small business, faith-based organizations, environmental, and education (pre-K, K-12, and higher ed), to coordinate effective information-sharing and unmetneed assistance for those affected, as well as working with Taos Connects (app.vomo.org/ org/taos-connects) to match volunteers within the Taos community with projects needing support. “The effects of COVID-19 including the Omicron surge have had a profound and lasting impact on this community — including positive outcomes,” Elliot continues. “The ECCOAD has demonstrated that open communication across sectors, with a bias for action-oriented solutions, is one of our best tools in the face of ongoing disasters. All people are encouraged to get vaccinated and boosted, to mask-up and use social distancing, and to stay home if they are sick for at least 5 days. Help exists for people and organizations affected by COVID-19. Request help or offer assistance at eccoad.org. Or email info@eccoad.org.” continues on page 18

urban Poison, Green Crack, and Blue Dream are the top medical cannabis strains in Taos. Patients who use these depend on a consistent efficacy and steady supply chain for their quality of life. In New Mexico, there are over 100,000 people enrolled in the medical cannabis program, which began in the late 1970s after the state passed legislation allowing the medical use of cannabis for a list of medical conditions which has expanded over the years of the program. In April 2021, Governor Lujan Grisham signed into law the Cannabis Regulation Act, opening the door for recreational cannabis. Within the medical cannabis community, some have voiced concern the high demand for recreational cannabis may lower the quantity available for medicinal patients. Julian Scanlon, a local grower studying methods of natural farming and permaculture, said “with the first sale of recreational cannabis in April 2022, consider what happened in other states once cannabis was open to the public. In most cases, states saw shortages. To account for this potential shortage, the cannabis control division of New Mexico and the Regulation and Licensing Department are requiring cannabis establishments to reserve at least 10 percent of their crop for the medicinal program. The cannabis control division

As the only store in Taos right now, we feel a duty to listen to our patients’ requests and feedback to get the products they need.” Crawford said “in other states medical cannabis has fizzled out and only those who need the tax break remain (recreational sales will be initially taxed at 12 percent and increase incrementally.) We intend to continue to serve the medical cannabis community with the same level of customer service and quality product.” Southwest Wellness also plans to begin Tissue Culture Cultivation in their grow houses, a futuristic process which involves growing plants by reusing the plant. Benefits to this approach include lower risk of pests and diseases and less risk of cross-contamination. Growers end up with a batch of high-quality explant, they can rely on for future production and consistent quality. Consistency in the strain profile is a priority for medical patients treating a specific illness. Crawford said besides continuing to produce “quality cannabis products to the people of New Mexico, we’ve expanded our range of manufactured products and positioned ourselves as a leader in cannabis genetics and propagation innovation.” She said Southwest Wellness dispensaries will add extra counters and product displays separate We’re patient-centric, focused from medical patients for recon providing access to the best reational users. ur current state; suicide, trauma, depression, substance use disorder (SUD), PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and widespread anger have increased since the pandemic commenced in 2020. In Taos County, several behavioral health providers offer accessible and individualized treatment. According to Heidi Wahl, chief operating officer at Pinwheel Healing (a local outpatient facility serving people ages 14 and up): “The pandemic has provided a challenge for people in rural areas who need transportation for care. We are doing telehealth statewide. We keep our group numbers low and follow best practices.”

Bipolar disorder, depression and PTSD are getting worse. We are an abstinence-based program. We are also biopsychosocial and [offer] the 12-step model. We offer discussions about spirituality.” Butterfly Healing (serves ages 14-18) along with Circle of Life (14 and up) primarily serve the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council, but do admit non-tribal members and offer both inpatient and outpatient treatment; a variable continuum of care. continues on page 44

COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CARE Complementary health care — including holistic alternatives, chiropractic services, Oriental medicine, massage and massage therapy, skin care, meditation, energy healing — is often best used in conjunction with Western medicine. Different fields of complementary medicine have different certification processes and some disciplines (such as Reiki) are not licensed by the state. Due diligence on the part of the patient is sometimes required in order to find out whether certain options are indeed the best for one's own health. Talk to your physician and verify a health care provider's credentials to the best of your ability. A good place to start is on the State of New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department web site, verification.rld.state.nm.us.
