An invitation from Aaron and Jed Magee — friends from elementary school and local designers/builders — to spend the winter in Taos provided a detour. Or would have, except he never left; he discovered home. “I feel a connection to Taos, it’s the mountains, rivers, people, it’s where the high desert meets high alpine peaks.” Here, he’s been “forced to be creative, to think outside the box,” inspiring him to work in the ski industry, in sales and marketing, in realty. He owned Taos Mountain Outfitters for a decade and currently owns the coin-operated laundromat Spin & Sparkle. Everything he’s learned serves his buyers and sellers.

Qualify the Client

Salloway describes the process in retail of “qualifying the customer, which means asking a lot more questions than giving answers.” To zero in on what feels right for a client, he goes the extra distance, even hundreds of miles. “My favorite thing to do is look at a little bit of everything with buyers. When the Calf Canyon and Hermit’s Peak fires roared up the Pecos Wilderness this past spring, residents became terrified as the fire raged. Many days of high winds blew sparks up to two miles ahead, igniting the forested mountain sides and farming valleys of San Miguel and Mora Counties. Communities ahead of the flames were warned to be ready to evacuate, and Chacon, Ocate, Guadalupita, Black Lake, Angel Fire, Eagle Nest were on high alert. Early in the disaster there were no services available to those residents, and Tara Chisum stepped up, offering her Keller Williams Real Estate office in Angel Fire as an Evacuation Station for the Moreno Valley. She organized the office as a food bank drop off and pick up point for evacuees to get groceries and supplies. She saw the need to coordinate volunteers and donations with requests, communicating through the community each day. Each following day the residents showed up with exactly what the evacuees needed.

Tara served as a point of contact between the Governor’s office, Homeland Security and their State Representative Roger Montoya, hosting a breakfast for over 100 evacuees and state and local leaders to identify and fill their needs. She kept in communication with the local fire chief and assisted the Federal firefighters establish a base of operations when they arrived in Angel Fire.

When danger drew near the order to leave was given. Her team had to evacuate the Evacuation Station, as residents were instructed to vacate their homes and businesses. Residents filled trucks and trailers to move their possessions out of the Moreno Valley. They eventually reopened in Mora to be closer to the fire victims. Her efforts then turned to a fundraising event which raised over $31,000, paid directly to victims of the fire.

She is thankful to the community members who really showed up to help their neighbors. Taos County Association of REALTORS is proud to honor Tara Chisum for her remarkable efforts, and wish to honor her as 2022’s REALTOR® OF THE YEAR.

“We thought we were coming to Taos for the summer in 2015,” says Koenig. “In classic Taos fashion, one thing led to another and we decided to stay.” He had been hired as a museum consultant at the Couse Foundation for the summer, but both he and Folwell fell in love with Taos and decided to find a way to stay here to see the fall. That ended up being forever.

After deciding to move to Taos, they began to search for a house. “We looked hard, but there was big disparity between Taos and Tucson prices where we owned a home,” says Folwell. “The homes were almost twice the price on a square-foot basis here compared to Tucson.” Eventually, they found the Valdez house that had been sitting vacant for several years. Koenig explains that the home was all closed in but there was no flooring other than the flagstone in the living room. The rest of the floors were just poured concrete and the backyard was dirt.

“We had seriously considered finding some land and putting a yurt on it,” he says. “Then we saw this property. In the pictures from the real estate listing online, it looked like hippie construction gone wrong. In reality, it turned out to be masterful craftsmanship.

When we got here, we saw that the bones were killer and it is beautifully sited. This was a huge opportunity for us. No way we could have afforded a house like this. We knew that this was our house — no matter what we had to do.”

The beautiful siting brings in big views of the rock face of El Salto and Taos Mountain through enormous plate glass windows that flank a rustic elegant rock fireplace. Looking the other direction down the Rio Hondo drainage, there are wide-open vistas of colorful sunsets. “Before we even owned the house, we would come over with a bottle of wine and cheese and climb up on the roof to watch the sunsets,” says Folwell.

The couple got a construction loan to finish the house and made some changes. They removed a small powder room in the living room so that they could enlarge the stairway that led up to the kitchen. This change helped better reveal the massive vigas that they were told came from Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. They also removed a partial wall that blocked the views of El Salto and Taos Mountain “Once we opened that up, the whole space made sense,” says Koenig.

Now, it is a gracious house for the couple and their extensive art collection, and also home to Folwell’s art studio. The studio and living room share the first floor with a bathroom that has a sleek two-person tub with views out to the evergreen-covered hillside.

The living room opens to the kitchen a few steps up. A curving staircase leads to a firstfloor study with a massive desk, an exact match to the desk that Koenig has at work. He found the desks two years apart and thinks they may have come from the State Savings Bank on the plaza that went out of business during the depression.

Farther up the stairs, there is a top-floor master bedroom that opens onto a rooftop deck. The first order of business was to knock out an existing window and add a door to the rooftop deck. “We don’t miss a sunset,” says Koenig. “If we are cooking dinner, we run upstairs with a glass of wine to watch the sun go down.”

When asked what he appreciates most about the house, he says, “There are three things I love: it is beautifully sited on top of the hill to take advantage of the views, the overall design and floor plan are so thoughtful, and the craftsmanship and materials are phenomenal. I really credit John Pinkard, the owner-builder, for the level of detail he brought to the house.”

Folwell points out that when entertaining, everyone ends up in the kitchen, but with this floor plan, the kitchen is open to the living room and there is more space for everyone. “It is wonderful to have heated floors, a real luxury,” she adds. “I always appreciate the views. Every single day we are grateful. Not a day that goes by that we don’t say we love it here.”

OUTSIDE SPACE & GUESTHOUSE

The previously bare backyard was finished over the next few years by the couple. Taking advantage of its hillside location, the backyard is now landscaped with terraces and has its own trail system complete with bridges and waterfalls. The house blocks the wind from the west and creates a protected private space for relaxing outdoors.

The 800-square-foot guesthouse was previously divided into two smaller apartments. They restored the space to create a larger comfortable space for guests. “When we opened up the space, the upstairs had commanding 360-degree views from the windows on every side; really the best views of the whole property,” says Koenig.

A LIFE OF ART

Folwell comes from a long line of potters on her mother’s side. The kitchen is filled with family pots from her grandmother Rose Naranjo, her mother Jody Folwell, and her Aunt Edna, who married into the Taos Pueblo and lives there. “I grew up on Santa Clara Pueblo. I went to the day school there,” says Folwell. “I attended Española High School, then went off to college. The place that had the biggest impact on me was the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. It’s an industrial design school and I ended up going there to study photography.”

Initially, she wasn’t interested in making pottery. “As a kid, you grow up having to help chop wood and dig clay for the pots, before you go play with your friends. Why would I grow up and do chores for a living?” she asked herself.

She eventually found her way back to pottery, and has been working as a potter for over 30 years. With inspiration from her father, painter Hank Folwell, she uses pottery as a canvas to paint her own ideas that incorporate social and political commentary, as well as pop art elements. Since she has been in Taos, she’s been working on a project that looks to the Taos Society of Artists founded in 1915 for inspiration. Working with Koenig, her work was featured in an exhibit at the Harwood Museum. “It was really fun,” she says. “Davison and I curated the show. I was neck deep in working with the TSA inspiration and thought it was going to be really brilliant or one of the stupidest things I have ever done, putting pottery next to master works. I wondered if they were going to hold up next to the original paintings. I think it actually turned out really well.”

One of her pots echoes a nighttime painting of Jerry Mirabal by E.I. Couse that sits on an easel in his studio, which is preserved as he left it in 1936. Other images reflect what she thinks the TSA artists might have taken with them in their wagon during a day of painting out in the Taos landscape, including a loaf of bread and a can of Taos Trout, based on a Bert Phillips image.

Much of her work is in private or museum collections. “Don’t let her fool you by being too humble,” says Koenig. “We recently redid her resume and she is in 20 museums internationally and just got commissions to be in two more.” Some of the museums feature the work of the TSA. “As far as we know, she is the only Native artist that is doing commentary work with the Taos Society of Artists,” he says.

Folwell adds,” It’s been fascinating, since the TSA work was done 100 years ago. It stands up well over time. The work did a lot in terms of humanizing Native Americans. It really does resonate for me — how beautifully they depicted Native people and how the artists had great relationships with their models. I really appreciate what they’ve done and what they’ve given to Native people. I think the work really helps with people’s understanding, even though it is a bit romanticized.”

Koenig explains that 100 years ago, most people’s exposure to Native people was through popular fiction and dime novels. Most Americans didn’t know a Native American and, at the time, there was still talk of the “Indian Problem.”

The work Folwell is doing with TSA coordinates well with the work Koenig does at the Couse-Sharp Historic Site. He says the TSA artists covered everything, from everyday life to completely romanticized versions of Native American life. “E.I. Couse portrayed the dignity and the beauty of Native people, in stark contrast to most Americans exposure to Native America. At that time, the prevalent imagery was the never-ending fight for Manifest Destiny — rounding up the wagons, while Indians on horseback let arrows fly. The work of the TSA, on the other hand, depicted the inner-life of the people. I would argue the artists of Taos and Santa Fe together had a significant humanities impact — through their thoughtful depictions and national reach, they helped change American’s perceptions of Native people. By the 1920s, these artists were so well known, people were traveling great distances to meet the artists of Taos and experience the cultures of the American Southwest.”

With a background in anthropology and contemporary Native art, Koenig himself is an artist. He came to Taos from the Arizona State Museum at the University of Arizona, intending to work on a project for Virginia Couse Leavitt focused on Joseph Henry Sharp. Soon after, he was hired as the first executive director and helped launch the creation of the Lunder Research Center, after receiving a $700,000 grant from the Lunder Foundation. “I’m really getting a good grasp of years of complexity of art and culture in Taos and Northern New Mexico after being here seven or eight years” he says. “I just love it. Its complexity makes it so rich. At the Couse-Sharp Historic Site, we focus on contemporary Native artwork and work closely with Taos Pueblo, including bringing day school students to the site for annual visits.” The research center offers tours, which are proving to be a draw for local residents. The archives of photos and information from 100 years ago are being used by national museums like The Denver Art Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and independent scholars from across the globe.

nter the 18th-century adobe that houses Tres Estrellas Gallery and be transported into centuries past. Chris Ferguson and Carla Bogdanoff specialize in historic rare textiles and other pieces contemporary to these vintage blankets, rugs and serapes. “Most of the pieces in this room tend to be what you call collector grade, they’re not inexpensive, they are somewhat iconic,” notes Ferguson. “Although your home decorating budget might not

include a circa 1870 late classic chief’s blanket, or early classic Rio Grande blanket from Nicolai Fechin’s personal collection, there are more modest/ approachable pieces to purchase.”

Passing from one room to the next takes one through time, disparate places and an intersection of cultures. An interpretation of these unique items by Chris sparks ideas about how to implement Taos style into home design, whatever one’s budget. Speaking of the historic weavings around him, “The elements that you see in them, you’re looking at the foundation stones of everything that we think of as Southwestern style and design.”

Located in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, Saltillo boasts centuries of fine weaving. This tradition is known for rich colors and patterns, but less spoken of is the labor-intensive creation of a blanket or serape. A more elaborate piece — intended for the wearer to demonstrate their wealth — might take months, even years, to pass from sheep’s back through spinning, dyeing, weaving. Move at the pace of the Southwest and select home goods that have been constructed with care by skilled hands.

Diamond, Chevron, Hourglass

Simple or complex, shapes help tell the origin story of a weaving. Taos style encompasses the three traditions explored below: Saltillo, Diné, and Rio Grande. Find these shapes and incorporate them in your furnishings.

Northern New Mexico weavers such as those in El Valle used European-style looms to produce larger weavings for market. They borrowed the bold color schemes of the Saltillo and the striking shapes the Diné favored, but infused their pieces with their own distinct flair, found in the border pattern. Combine your own style with the influences of the many cultures around you.

The Diné artistry with vegetal dyes was rooted in traditional knowledge and benefitted from trade in Mexico.

Before synthetic aniline dyes were more readily available, circa 1880, dyers incorporated indigo for blues, chamisa and chamiso for yellow, and cochineal for various shades of red, a symbol of power.

Cochineal comes from the dried, powdered bodies of a scale insect that eats and lives on Nopal cactuses. Combine all three and a rainbow of colors is possible.

Throughout the gallery, blankets and serapes shift between two- and three-dimensional, depending on how they are displayed. While not exactly trod upon there, they are hung on walls, folded on tables, draped over free-standing body forms, and even actual shoulders. Bring unusual objects into your space and present them in new ways.

Pre-Columbian weaving would have used cotton and other plant materials, but with the arrival of sheep, wool became favored. Ferguson describes a relationship with these textiles: “They’re really better if they’re being occasionally handled. The worst thing you can do is store it away and not look at it.” Celebrate Taos style with functional art.

The repetition of shapes creates eye-catching patterns within all three traditions. The Diné used terraced designs throughout the work they created on upright looms. Chris notes these geometric shapes were created by “borrowing what they did [in their] basket weaving.” Lightning, powerful element that it is, could be captured in cloth. Condos

There are many pros to condo-living in Angel Fire, especially in the current market, where stand-alone home inventory is lower than normal. If you love convenience, affordability and amenities, a condo is an ideal choice for you.

The pros of condo living

Despite the competitive market and lack of inventory for sale, condos continue to enter the market at affordable prices.

• Cost

Speaking of affordability, for those with a more modest budget, condos offer great bang for your buck. You can enjoy mountain life without worrying about breaking the bank. You’ll avoid high mortgages payments, not to mention large maintenance fees that are often associated with owning a home.

• Flexibility

A condo is also a great option for those looking to live in Angel Fire seasonally. If you’re big into skiing and snowboarding and want to spend your winters in the Enchanted Circle, a condo is a great choice for a second home.

• Convenience

If you want to be close to the center of town and have access to amenities, a condo is the choice for you. Many condos, especially in Angel Fire, are located centrally, within five minutes of Angel Fire Resort. If you love the idea of living far from your neighbors, a home will fit the bill.

• Financial Appreciation

Purchasing a home is a great financial investment. You can diversify your portfolio with any property, but stand-alone homes appreciate faster than condos.

The cons of stand-alone homes

The number one con of most stand-alone properties is price. If you’re looking for something more affordable, a condo is usually — though not always — your best option. Especially if you’re a sunbird, a resident who lives in the Southern Rockies for skiing and snowboarding season, condos often make the most economical sense. Homes also tend to need more maintenance, so if you’re only here for the winter or summer, you won’t want to spend precious time on upkeep.

The boundaries of Taos County stretch from the Colorado border on the north to the Cañón del Río Grande on the south. Containing 2,203 square miles, the 7,000-foot-high Taos Valley is bounded in the east by the soaring Sangre de Cristos of the southern Rockies and in the west by the lower Tusas Range. The terrain crosses a half-dozen ecological zones, from high-alpine tundra to sage grasslands; thus, weather is often localized.

The Río Grande carves a deep gorge down the center of the valley, which is dotted with old volcanic cones and necks.

Tribal members of Picuris Pueblo have lived above the Río Pueblo near Peñasco for centuries. Taos Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the United States and the northernmost of the 19 Río Grande pueblos. Pueblo history traces back some 1,000 years - centuries before the first Europeans arrived in the late 1500s. These conquistadors claimed the land for Spain, and soon Spanish and Mexican land grantees settled in the Taos area. Ancestral acequias still divert water from seven watersheds along the Sangre de Cristo front into pastures, fields, and orchards.

Roughly 50 percent of Taos County’s 1,444,480 acres is federal land, primarily U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. About 38 percent of the county is private. Native Americans own 4.3 percent, and state lands make up 6.7 percent. Federal lands accommodate hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, ATV and snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. Golfers tee off at Taos Country Club and Valle Escondido; skiers and snowboarders carve up Taos Ski Valley and Sipapu Ski Area. Government jobs predominate in the local economy and, in the last several decades, tourism has replaced agriculture as a primary economic driver. Real estate and home construction provide revenues and jobs. Visitors come to experience the triculture atmosphere, the hundred-mile views, and adobe stylings - and many return for good. Taos Ski Valley sits at the head of the Rio Hondo Canyon, surrounded by Carson National Forest in what is known as the La Cal Basin. New Mexico’s highest point, Wheeler Peak (13,167), rises to the east, and the ridge off Kachina Peak (12,481) sets the western boundary. The climate is montane and alpine, with winter lows below zero and summer highs in the 70s. The economy of the area is dominated by Taos Ski Valley, a world-class winter sports mountain that is known for its steep trails and an average of 300 inches of snowfall. The basin first attracted settlement when gold and copper were discovered in the early 1900s. Founders Ernie and Rhoda Blake put up the first ski lift in 1956 and, until 2013, the family owned the resort. In 2013, the family sold the mountain and facilities to former hedge fund manager Louis Bacon, who began upgrades and renovations starting with the 2014 construction of the Kachina Peak chairlift.

The base area, at 9,200 feet elevation, includes day and overnight facilities. The mountain has 15 lifts and 110 trails, with a total vertical drop of more than 3,000 feet. Typically, about 250,000 skiers

and snowboarders hit the slopes every year. Other winter activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country and back-country skiing, and tubing. In the summer, the main chairlift takes hikers, mountain bikers and sightseers to mid-mountain.

The Village of Taos Ski Valley, incorporated in 1996, encompasses 2.3 square miles in the valley and administers municipal services, such as water, sewer, and police.

The 5.4 square miles of incorporated town of Taos spreads out beneath the shadow of Pueblo Peak (12,305) and is bounded roughly by the Río Lucero on the north and Río Grande de Ranchos on the south. At 7,000 feet in elevation, Taos experiences winter lows in the single digits and summer highs in the low 90s.

Taos Puebloans inhabited the sage-piñón-juniper mountain front for several centuries before Spanish explorers arrived around 1600. Soon, Spanish settlers returned, armed with land grant decrees from the king. The central Plaza became the hub of activity and the site of conflicts – often bloody –between the Spanish, natives, and late-arriving Americans. Long isolated from the outside world, Taos began to grow in the 1960s with an influx of hippies to nearby communities. Taos continues to grow to this day with young ski bums and rafters and older retirees.

Commercial activity centers on the Plaza area and along north and south ends of Paseo del Pueblo, the main thoroughfare. A popular home for Southwest artists, Taos boasts dozens of galleries, boutiques, and craft shops – plus renowned studio tours and arts and crafts festivals. Dozens of restaurants serve up wide varieties of cuisine; the Northern New Mexico red-sauce dishes are celebrated. Just south of town in Ranchos de Taos sits St. Francis de Asís Catholic Church, reputed to be the most photographed church in America. The Catholic influence can be seen in the cemeteries, roadside descansos, and neighborhood churches called capillas and moradas. The locals speak a patois of English and Castilian Spanish.

As the county seat, Taos is home to the county government and district courts. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have a strong presence in town. On the outskirts of town, pastures, fields, and gardens irrigated by ancestral acequias extend out from the rivers and streams.

The town of Red River bustles along the Red River, a mountain tributary to the Rio Grande. The settlement’s elevation is 8,750 feet, and it’s surrounded by Carson National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The climate ranges from winter lows below 0 to summer highs in the 70s. Thunderstorms often roll through on summer afternoons. Gold miners first settled the area in the mid-1800s. Red River Ski Area rises to the south of town with a vertical drop of 1,600 feet. The ski area offers a popular Aerial Ropes Course and the Pioneer Flyer, a small seated-type zip line. In the summer, lifts run for mountain bikers, hikers, and sightseers.

For a fee, wintertime enthusiasts can explore the 21 miles of groomed skiing and snowshoeing trails at Enchanted Forest Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Area, located 3 miles east of town. In town, private rental services lease out snowmobiles and ATVs, and horse trail-riding is a popular summer activity.

The town of Red River administers municipal services for residents, visitors and nearly 200 businesses in the community. The town hosts a number of popular summertime events, beginning with the three-day Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally that typically attracts more than 20,000 motorcyclists for the long weekend.

Angel Fire is located at an elevation of 8,382 feet above sea level in the high Moreno Valley of Colfax County.
