Safety First

Before you excavate... Dial Before You Dig is a national community service designed to prevent damage and disruption to the vast underground pipe and cable networks around Australia. These underground assets provide the community with the essential services such as electricity, gas, water and telecommunications. To ensure these assets are protected and the practice of safe excavation is maintained, Dial Before You Dig assists builders, landscapers, farmers, civil contractors and any other excavators to locate underground utilities anywhere in Australia by acting as the middle man between excavators and underground asset owners.

It is important to find out as much information as possible regarding underground infrastructure before excavating and the first step in this process is straightforward: by simply lodging a Dial Before You Dig enquiry before commencing any excavation works to reduce the risk of infrastructure damage, serious injury and even in the worst case, death. Therefore, those involved in excavation works should advise Dial Before You Dig of where they intend to work by lodging an enquiry online at www.1100.com.au

The Four P's of Excavation 1. Plan

Use the Dial Before You Dig service at least two business days before the job is due to begin to ensure that the correct information is in hand to carry out a safe project.

2. Pothole

Potholing (hand digging) is a method to assist in establishing the exact location of all under-ground infrastructure.

3. Protect

Protecting and supporting the exposed infrastructure is the responsibility of the excavator. Safety barriers should be erected in risk areas to protect underground networks.

4. Proceed

ONLY when planning, potholing and all protective measures are in place.

To order call 02 9502 6000 fax 02 9502 6099 or email sales@tapex.com.au 1

Dial Before You Dig – the Essential First Step of Excavation

Safety First

Once an enquiry is lodged: details including the location, date and type of work being carried out are then sent to infrastructure owners with assets in the vicinity of the project. The asset owners then respond directly to excavators with information on the location of underground pipes and cables.

Duty of Care Safe excavation is not just about lodging a Dial Before You Dig enquiry. It is also important to remember that excavators have a duty of care around underground pipes and cables and therefore, it is worth noting the following points:

This information is normally provided in the form of plans and these need to be on site to ensure the right information is available before any excavation commences.

Information regarding the location of underground pipes and cables should be requested well in advance of any excavation activities.

The Dial Before You Dig mobile website service is also available on hand held devices. Lodging an enquiry using a mobile device requires valid login credentials which can be obtained by registering on the Dial Before You Dig website via desktop.

If the scope of works changes or plan validity dates expire, a new Dial Before You Dig enquiry must be submitted.

An enquiry can also be lodged by contacting the call centre on 1100 during business hours.

It is important that all plans are received and understood before any project commences.

The work site must be observed closely, looking for clues of underground infrastructure such as pits, marker posts, warning signs and meters. Always proceed with caution and carefully excavate by hand (potholing) when working close to underground networks. If any underground pipes and cables are found by potholing, they must be protected before excavation begins. If more assistance from an owner of underground assets is needed, contact them directly using the number provided on the plans. All workers onsite must be briefed on the excavation process. If damage to an underground asset occurs, the asset owner must be advised immediately. To further assist excavators to practice safe excavation Dial Before You Dig has designed a range of educational resources available at www.1100.com.au such as a Safe Excavation page and Best Practice guides as well as links to other useful resources.

RFID Marker Balls

Omni Marker Balls Omni Marker provides a new and better way to mark and locate underground facilities. Unlike other marking devices with a single coil, the Omni Marker contains three orthogonal tuned circuits. When excited by a standard marker locator, these passive circuits produce a uniform, spherical RF (Radio Frequency) field in every direction. No ball positioning is required. The Marker can easily be located up to 1500m away.

Use it to locate buried splices, load coils, service drops, pipe ends, conduit stubs, road crossings, cable paths, fiber optic facilities, non-metallic lines, buried tanks or manholes. Frequency & colour coded by the buried service.

EXCAVATION SAFETY

Passive, high reliability design assures many years of service - Omni Marker contains no batteries or active components.

Rhino Triview Marker Posts Solving the hard problems at an economical cost PROBLEM

EXCAVATION SAFETY

Posts & signs being bent or broken

Cattle and wildlife often use markers & sign posts to scratch or lean on. Slow speed & direct tire impacts can also damage markers. Instead of using rigid posts, the TriView PLUSTMis flexible & will rebound.

Rusted, faded or gunshot signs

TM

TriView, made from RhinoPoly with Extreme UV resistant decals, resists fading and makes costly repainting unnecessary.

SOLUTION TM

TriView PLUS

TriView FlexPLUS includes a fiberglass rod the rebounds the post from direct tire or hoof contacts. Installs the same as a direct-buried TriView. Withstands repeated impacts from farm machinery and off-road vehicles. TM

Rhino TriView

The slim post profile and plastic material makes for an unsatisfying target! Bullets pass through without leaving a hole.

Dangerous broken or bent metal posts

TriView

Low profile or broken metal posts are dangerous. Flat posts are often hit by R/W maintenance equipment because they cannot be seen from the side.

TriView’s easy-to-see triangular shape helps the operator avoid hitting your posts, and reduces the risk of damage to and from vehicles and resultant liability claims.

CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPING Geosynthetics Terram Geotextiles

For the full range of Terram products visit www.terram.com.au

Terram standard geotextiles provide a stable base for construction on soft subgrade by preventing unwanted intermixing of soils with granular materials.

CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPING

Typical uses include stabilisation around drainage materials and of ground between the sub-base and subgrade. Preventing intermixing of granular materials and soils Terram geotextiles provide an effective solution to the problem of constructing a stable granular layer over soft foundation soils. When stone is placed directly on a soft subgrade, the imposed load often causes intermixing of two layers. This results in contamination of the stone layer and a resulting loss in bearing strength, surface rutting and deformation at the subbase/subgrade interface. By providing filtration and separation, Terram enhances the performance and life of the granular layers and is ideal for preventing the ingress of fines into drainage media, whether granular drains or open geocellular units.

Terram filters/separators are used in the construction of: • Paved and unpaved roads • Railways • Car parks and hardstandings • Cycleways and footpaths • SuDS installations • Green roofs

CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPING Geosynthetics Terram Hi-Vis TERRAM Hi-Vis is an orange, non-woven geotextile used for the easily detectable separation of contaminated/ uncontaminated soils.

Terram Hi-Vis is: • A highly-visible separator, preventing intermixing of adjacent mineral layers • Quick and easy to install • Supplied in 4.5m x 100m rolls for rapid coverage • Available in a number of strengths to suit site requirements

TERRAM Geocomposites Terram Geocomposites are manufactured by bonding together textiles and drainage nets in to create easier-to-install replacements for conventional granular layers. The textile layer provides the filter function which allows liquids and gases to pass into the net core but prevents soil particles from washing into and clogging the core. The net layer collects the liquids and gases which can then be conveyed to collection points.

The benefits of using Terram composite drains include: • High-volume flow paths for liquids and gases • Lightweight and easy to handle • Quick and easy to install • Cost-effective replacement for primary natural resources • Reduced environmental impact by avoiding the use of natural-occurring minerals • Lower haulage costs, lower material costs and lower installation costs

Soils Structure/Earth reinforcement Terram Geocell provides a cost-effective alternative to conventional earth retention structures. Flexible: can be filled with a wide range of fill materials Can be installed almost vertically by placing one horizontal layer on top of a filled layer Can be used to form the face, or used to face a composite wall in conjunction with horizontal reinforcement elements such as geogrids, or with soil nails, rock bolts, helical anchors, etc Load Platforms/Tree root protection The Terram geocell is used to protect tree roots from damage caused by heavy vehicles. The road or parking area can be constructed once the roots have been covered by the geocell and filled with a granular material. The geocell ensures that axle loads are spread laterally rather than applied vertically Compaction beneath the traffic line is minimised, protecting roots and the trees from damage

DefenCell Flood Protection

DefenCell速 has been proven in action to be an effective and easily installed Flood Protection barrier. Using DefenCell速 to build new defences, enhance existing protection measures or reinforce weakened levees ensures that communities, towns and farms are protected.

Mobility - DefenCell is easy to handle and transport offering significant logistical advantages over sandbags and other barrier systems. Each unit is man portable, 4.9m long section x .5m high (unpacked), weighing less than 10kgs each. 24 units packed on standard pallets. Easy Construction - DefenCell is easy to assemble and can be erected without major support equipment. Filling can be completed using standard mechanical handling equipment or by hand. Simplicity - DefenCell is modular in design and the barrier system comprises only five different units. Construction can be tailored in height, width and configuration to meet flood protection requirements. Strength - cellular structure provides considerable strength combined with built-in redundancy so if one cell is damaged the one behind will continue to provide protection and stability.

Terram Root Guard

CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPING

Tested by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, DefenCell速 significantly outperform sandbags through:

Tree roots grow very close to the surface and can be the cause of considerable damage to buildings, walls, paths, drainage pipes, cables and lawns. TERRAM RootGuard is used to protect against damage caused by root development including the undermining of structures with shallow foundations and blockage to damaged pipes, or pipes with faulty joints. The permeable solution TERRAM RootGuard is a geotextile manufactured from polypropylene/polyethylene fibres, which provides excellent resistance to root development due to the high tensile strength, high puncture resistance and its capability of withstanding the differential forces that can develop in clay soils. In the instances where a water-permeable solution is necessary e.g. surrounding land drains, TERRAM RootGuard is the solution.

CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPING Tree Guards ®

Tubex Tree Protection

Tubex Easywrap

The Tubex Easywrap can be slipped over a seedling and will expand as the plant grows, providing reliable herbicide protection as it retains its height and shape. Easywrap also provides protection from small animals such as rabbits and possums.

Tubex Combitube Available in TUBEX 12D degradeable material, ensuring that the shelter will naturally degrade after the service life of the shelter.

CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPING

A twin-walled tube with a vertical split which produces a natural overlap, enables the Tubex Easywrap to produce better growth and survival rates.

Combitube is designed to last a minimum of 5 years*, boosting the chances of survival and healthy growth through the early stages of the tree’s life. Ventilation is provided by a number of 4mm laser generated perforations in a set of 100mm deep bands at the top of the shelter, allowing for ‘wind rock’ to strengthen both root and stem as well as hardening the bark of the tree. 45cm of solid base allows chemical spraying and creates the microclimate, whilst the perforations ventilate the tree and are small enough for the branches not to grow through. Higher air moisture within the Tubex tree shelter reduces water stress and enables the plant to survive better in dry or drought conditions. Call Tapex today about different Tubex sizes and configurations to provide a premium tree guard solution.
