{january/february 2012} {The moon is an incredible object: it controls the tide, maintains synchronous rotation with Earth, and is the brightest object in the sky after the sun despite an extremely dark surface. From our perspective, this glowing object operates on a cycle, which begins again, brand new, almost monthly. The moon is a constant in our lives and our society, affecting everything from when we swim to when we harvest crops. For this issue, in light of la lune, we examined cycles, patterns, and beginnings, while simultaneously delving into the eclipse from reality style can sometimes bring to us. It seems that, especially in the winter months, fashion can assume a position of lesser importance when comfort and warmth come into play. But cycles are not always good, and sometimes rather than settling for ease in the dragging months preceding spring, it is healthier to challenge ourselves to be better and keep growing, whether in fashion or greater aspects of our lives. Style is merely a setup for how we approach the outside world, and while dismissing temporary comfort is unsettling, it is necessary for progress. We must make the world uncomfortable with our actions. Ideals are just that: idealistic. They are not personal, and certainly not beneficial. Individuals are what make up the great collective of our world. So as our world continues to change around us and the moon works it’s wonders, there is a question we must ask ourselves: do we follow the tide and succumb to societal ideals? Or do we break the cycle?} {page 7}
