President’s Message
Greetings all. Great news! Woody Walters is coming to town. YES! He will be our speaker for the February meeting! But wait ---- there’s more! Woody will be coming to town early to teach a two day workshop. His short program at the meeting will be but a taste of his class but by then the class will be over so make your reservation now so you don’t miss anything. Woody’s class was sold out at Florida School last year so this is your chance to learn about his unique brushes and artistic style. I strongly recommend this class to anyone who does or is thinking about doing senior portraits and to everyone who would like to take their portrait and artistic work to the next level. Woody will be holding a two (2) day class Feb 6,7 Sat/Sun 2016 from 9:30 to 5:30 pm Class will cost $200.00. All Two day wokshop attendees will receive a set of Woody Smoke brushes It will be held at the studio of Benjamin Todd, 1906 N. Armenia Ave, Tampa, FL. 33607
Now is a great time to learn some new techniques and to work on that New Year’s resolution to add a new level of art to your offerings. If you read this let me know by telling me who you would like to have as a speaker at one of our TAPPA meetings. Benjamin Todd, CPP
Space is limited so book early. Studio @ 1906 Armenia Ave Suite 201 Tampa Fl 33607 benjamin.todd@verizon.net Cell: 813.431.2873

Selling
Persuasion beats information every time
by Chuck Vosburgh, CPP Recently, I learned a sales technique that after 30+ years of selling changed my approach. It’s been so effective I sometimes feel a little bit sorry for competitors who are still approaching their presentation the same way everyone else does. I was taught that the best way to sell is to position yourself as an expert and the best way to position yourself as an expert is to be informative. As it turns out, that’s ineffective because it skips the most vital step in selling. This step, if skipped greatly reduces the chances people will listen to you!
The missing step Before you can inform someone, you must persuade them that your message is worth listening to. This is especially important in a competitive business like photography because everyone is giving the same basic information. I know you’re special, but in the minds of prospective customers you’re one of the many people they know who take pictures. It is imperative to be persuasive.

Here’s how: First, you must have something that makes you beneficial. Second, you must present a problem. Next, you must present a harm in not acting. Finally, you provide a solution and reason to act now. Problem, harm, and solution. Politics aside, President Regan was one of the best communicators in recent history. In fact, he’s known as “the great communicator”. Regan kept a stack of index cards, each one with a problem, a harm, a solution and a reason to act now on it. Each index card had an issue that he would speak about. When preparing for a speech, he would choose and arrange the cards, create a bridge between each issue and that was the basis for his speech. You can easily have the confidence that can only come from being prepared, and with his simple technique you’ll be prepared anywhere, any time. It also allows you to address any objections you think may come up in advance. If you’re in an elevator, you have time for one card. If you’re at a networking group and have 30 seconds, you have time for one card. If you have five minutes, you have time for three cards. If you
have 20 minutes, you have time for five or more cards. You’ll easily have the cards memorized because you wrote them. If you only have a short time to speak, it’s ok. You don’t have to always try to close. All you have to do is earn the right to speak to someone again and follow up. You can close then. The idea is to move forward every time you speak.
Putting it into action Start by writing down 20 things that make you different than other photographers. Here’s a hint; some of the things may be things you think are disadvantageous. I’ll explain later. Next, write down what’s good about each of them from a client’s perspective. Use that information to create a problem, what the harm will be if they don’t act now and your solution to the problem. Here’s an example: For me, I’ve always done commercial and editorial work and one benefit was that I can always produce a great image no matter what the circumstances. So, the problem is that the client doesn’t know if the photographer can do the kind of work that’s in their portfolio consistently and under pressure until it’s too late. The harm is that either the deadline gets missed
or they have to go with an image that’s not as good as what they imagined. Both of which can cost someone their job or at the very least be incredibly stressful. The solution is to hire me because I come through every time and I can prove it with examples and written testimonials. I’d also encourage you to take a look at the things that you think are disadvantages and turn them into advantages. New to the business? You have fresh ideas and haven’t settled into doing the same thing over and over. Don’t have much equipment? You travel light and can quickly take advantage of changing situations. The things that you perceive as disadvantages may be an advantage to some people. Finally, be scrappy. Be resourceful, don’t be afraid to ask for business. If there’s something to be gained by asking and nothing to lose, you must ask!
Learn more I learned this technique and how to apply it to my business from Small Message, Big Impact by Terri L. Sjodin. I highly recommend you get this book and apply it to your business. TAPPA Tribune

This Month’s Program

VisualizationThe Future of Photography There will always be a need for high quality straight forward photographs. Even the quest to produce an above average portrait requires a great deal of visualization on behalf of the photographer. Quality of light, separation of highlight and shadow, relationships of figure and background, all must perform in harmony together to convey the final outcome. In today’s world we are bombarded with not only high quality visual content, but very creative visual content as well. Semi trucks converting into robots, landscapes with mountains and waterfalls floating in the skies, anything we can think of, we can make real in this digital world we live in. How we take our ideas and concepts and turn them into a photograph still boils down to the act of visualization. Join Woody Walters as he explores the future of Photography. See the process as he unfolds elements or pieces to make up the whole of an image. Understand the physical effects of colors and tonal values and how they relate to the subject and story of the image. Avatar, Planet of Apes, and Star Wars, were all extremely creative with high impact visual content and imagery. To recreate spectacular images it comes down to your vision and what you want the viewer to ultimately feel. Woody will show you his process of how he breaks down images into segments. Open your creative awareness and give your images a new breath of excitement and visualization.

Woody will be holding a two (2) day class Feb 6,7 Sat/Sun 2016 from 9:30 to 5:30 pm Class will cost $200.00. All attendees will receive a set of Woody Smoke brushes It will be held at the studio of Benjamin Todd, 1906 N. Armenia Ave, Tampa, FL. 33607 Space is limited so book early Starting with single images and beautiful lighting, Woody will teach you how to transform your photography with photoshop brushes and backgrounds to create drama and add interest. You will discover how easy it is to add special effects like fire, powder, lighting and fog and soft floral effects. You will learn how to choose colors and manipulate the digital elements to tell a story. This course is very hands-on and photoshop heavy, with only one actual photo session to teach you Woody’s lighting techniques.
The rest of the class will be completely filled with projects each building on the one before it so that at the end of the class you will have a whole new arsenal of tools and elements at your disposal. Class Highlights: •Learn how to take an image from average to amazing in less than an hour. •Learn composition, color, tonal values, and color theory and how to direct a viewer’s eye where you want it to go. •How to sell it. The majority of Woody’s class will be teaching techniques that can be created in 15 minutes to a few hours. Even though Woody will spend a small amount of time on advanced compositing, he believes that the average studio cannot afford to spend days creating detailed complex digital montages for one client. It simply is not lucrative.
