President’s Message

Greetings TAPPA members! Happy 2016! I hope everyone had a busy and productive holiday season. As the new year begins let me say that I am very happy to, once again be President of TAPPA. I was not expecting to do this job again but we had an early departure from the board and that left a gap that I was asked to fill. I appreciate the trust. Once again I would like to see education be a rallying call of my second term. I believe that the greatest perk of membership in an organization is the opportunities to learn under so many different experts in so many different fields. I would like to raise money for more Scholarships to FPP Florida Photography Workshops (formerly known as Florida School). The FPP Spring Seminar will be right here in Tampa at the Doubletree on February 28 (9-5) and will feature Damon Tucci. He will be presenting on wedding and portrait techniques with a ‘hands-on’ period. I will talk about this in greater depth later but I want to caution TAPPA as a group, we need to be very open and welcoming to all new and potential members. The idea that we can teach a new photographer valuable lessons by using satire and by making them the butt of jokes is very wrong. I see the future of professional photography as having many young parents who plan to run their businesses as part time so that they can also spend time raising their families. To give them cute monikers and make comedy acts about them will only drive them away from both our local guild and state organization into the welcoming hands of other professional groups who do not make fun of them. While I am president, TAPPA will be welcoming and will not be just an entertainment club for the old guard.

As the new year begins I want to thank outgoing president Susan Black, who remains on the board. I would also like to thank Kevin Newsome and Carol Hackman as they rotate off the board after serving their terms. I want to welcome aboard new board members Amanda Pratt, Karen Barnett, and Glenn Nielson. When you see me at a meeting please let me know that you took the time to read this by saying “Hey Benjamin -- Happy New Year.” Benjamin

Selling

Take five for sales

By Chuck Vosburgh, CPP

This month I’m starting a new monthly column all about sales. In my 30+ years of being a fulltime self-employed photographer I’ve learned that once you reach the point of minimum competence, sales ability is the determining factor in how much you earn. Unfortunately when I was in art school there were no classes in sales and my interviews with many of the young members in TAPPA confirmed that there is still no such curriculum. It makes sense, first you must learn your craft. Now it’s time to sell and I want to help you. . My goal is each month to give you practical, actionable advice that you can start using right away. You may not want to do them, but if you do I can guarantee you will be successful. I also want you questions and input. What are your challenges?

The 5-5-5 method You may have heard of the 80/20 rule. It’s a well accepted idea that among other things, 80% of your income will come from 20% of your clients. The 80/20 rule is also often applied to sales and

6

TAPPA Tribune

my experience has been that it’s pretty accurate. Here’s how it works: To get one prospect, you must meet 40 people. to get one client you must talk to 40 prospects. You see, most people either aren’t interested for some reason or don’t need you right now. You don’t even need to do the math to see that you need a lot of people to stay busy doing billable work. This may seem daunting, but don’t worry, all you need is a plan. Here’s the plan, every day, have a goal to meet five new people, send out five emails or letters to people you already know and send out five cards to people you either know or don’t know. Here’s how to do it:

Meet five new people This one is the toughest. You probably won’t be able to meet five new people every day, so make averages work for you. So where do you meet these five people? Everywhere. Here’s an example of a day I met my goal: Starbuck’s, two people; In line at the store, one person; waiting for a table at the restaurant, one person. The server at the restaurant makes five. Don’t worry about making

sure they know what you do at first. Just get used to initiating conversations. Go to events or any gatherings where there are people you don’t know. I realize it can be hard at first, but if I can learn how to do it, you can

Send five emails or telephone calls This one is easy because it involves people you already know. Choose your five people and send them a personal email or better yet pick up the phone and call. The key here is to make it personal. Copy and paste won’t do. Here’s an example of one of the days I met my email goal: I found an article that would be of interest to one of the people I know. It was one person’s birthday so I called. I saw on FaceBook that one person was under the weather so instead of posting on FaceBook I sent a personal email wishing them well. I followed up with someone about a conversation I had with them. I was at a loss for my fifth one so I sent a sincere “haven’t seen you in a while hope you’re doing well” email. Inviting someone to lunch or for coffee would be another way to contact.

Mail five cards Have cards printed. You may have a nice photo for the front and leave the inside blank. I use 4over4.com for mine. Keep five cards a day on your desk and find any excuse to send a card. Thank-you cards are the easiest. If you can’t think of five people to thank certainly someone had something happen in their life to congratulate them on. Keep an eye on LinkedIn and FaceBook for ideas. If you’re at a loss, just a simple thinking of you card is always nice. The power of a handwritten card can not be overstated.

Do it At this point you’re probably wondering if you can do all this work. It’s not that hard once you make it part of your routine. You can and you must. No one makes the goal every day. Just keep moving forward the best you can. The business goes to the one who is willing to work harder. So, what do you think? I’d love to hear from you. Cinematic Portraits - Creating Old Hollywood Style Images In the constantly evolving world of professional photography, it seems like everyone is always looking for the next big thing. When everyone else is trying to figure out what is new and fresh, Pete Wright has been looking back to the classic portraits from the 20’s and 30’s for inspiration. His studio has developed a reputation for his Film Noir look, which is an homage to photographic greats like George Hurrell, Clarence Sinclair Bull and other photographic pioneers from Old Hollywood. Step-by-Step Instructions for Drone Registration By Professional Photographers of America (PPA) on December 23, 2015 3:55 PM by Lindsey Forson

There is a lot of information floating around right now regarding new FAA regulations for drone or UAS use. We want to clear a few things up for you and give you some helpful tips! The new regulations released this week from the FAA require the registration of all Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). As of Monday, the FAA launched a very simple online registration process for hobbyist users of small UAS. There is a paper application currently available for commercial users, but it is important to note that commercial use is still only currently permitted for professional photographers who have been granted a Section 333 exemption and are licensed pilots or have exempt licensed pilots operating the UAS. We expect the FAA to finalize new regulations for business-related use of small UAS during the first half of 2016. The FAA has also said that the online UAS registration system will be expanded to include business-related use by the spring of 2016. If you are using UAS for hobbyist or recreational purposes while awaiting new regulations for business use, be sure to register your UAS with the FAA as soon as possible. Please see our recent coverage (link to last blog post) for

46

TAPPA Tribune

more information on the most recent regulatory change. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to register your UAS after the jump: (1) Visit the FAA’s registration portal at https:// registermyuas.faa.gov/. (2) Choose “Register My Drone.” (3) Enter your email address and create a password. (4) Verify your email address. You will receive an email from UAS.Registry@faa.gov. Click on the link provided to verify. (5) You will then be able to login using the email address and password you provided at https:// registermyuas.faa.gov/. (6) A “System Use Notice” will pop-up on the screen. You will need to agree to the terms.

(7) Once you login, fill out your profile with very basic contact and personal information. Then click “proceed to checkout.”

(8) Read and acknowledge the safety guidelines. (9) Enter payment information. The registration $5.00. If you register prior to January 21, there is no cost. Your registration fee will be refunded automatically. Then confirm the payment.

(12) After three years you must re-register. Please keep in mind that this online system is brand new and is probably currently experiencing an extremely high volume of traffic. Most of the issues have occurred if the user has logged out or the system has timed out. For this reason, we recommend you complete the entire registration process without logging out of the system. The registration only takes about five minutes from start to finish. Lindsey Forson is PPA’s Copyright & Government Affairs Coordinator. She works with members on a daily basis addressing copyright questions and works closely with our CEO to advocate for professional photographers on Capitol Hill and to keep members informed on the issues that affect their businesses. She’s new to Atlanta and spends most of her free time exploring the city (restaurants, markets, parks); spends three nights a week playing soccer and is a huge Auburn fan.

(10) Receive your unique registration number which applies to all UAS you own for three years. (11) Follow the instructions to mark your UAS with your number. You will receive a registration certificate from the FAA.

What Will You Be More of in 2016? By Professional Photographers of America (PPA) on December 17, 2015 1:50 PM By Sarah Ackerman

The New Year is coming. Now is the perfect time to take a few moments, reflect on what 2015 has brought to you and your business and evaluate where you want to go for the next trip around the sun. We asked what you wanted to do in 2016 and here’s what your fellow photographers had to say:

Mark Turner, CPP of Bellingham, Washington: The big thing for me next year has to be improving my business systems. I’m sure there will be incremental improvements in the quality of what I offer, but if my business is to grow (and grow more profitable) I have to do a better job of implementing what I’ve learned from many workshops about running my business. And I’ve been at this for many years. You’d think I’d have learned by now.

James Lout of Grand Junction, Colorado: The biggest thing I plan to focus on is finishing the CPP process. I’ve already passed the test, but need

48

TAPPA Tribune

to nail the image submissions. I don’t believe I’m quite there yet, so I opted to not submit this year and pay the 100 bucks to extend it to give me time to nail it 100% percent.

Kari Castrogiovanni of Burbank, California: First and foremost... Learning how to use theLoop better. My resolution for 2016 is to implement a solid marketing strategy. I am a photographer turned to Photo Retoucher nearly 5 years ago. I have worked with several talented retouchers who have shown me the tricks of the trade. The images I have worked on as a subcontractor have been seen on covers of popular magazines, TV shows, and even a billboard. The only issue is I’m unable to take any credit for them. I have decided to branch off on my own. I’m currently in the brainstorming phase to come up with creative ways to get photographers to notice my talents and take a chance on me. My goal is to go full force in January and make 2016 the most rewarding and successful year to date.

Melanie Wirkkala of Centralia, Washington: Ahh, New Year’s Resolutions - so easy to make and sometimes difficult to do. Upgrades for my software are on the list. Also camera and lenses. Continue to learn more about studio work, LightRoom, and Photoshop. Learning is always an adventure!

Charles Burgess of Pensacola, Florida:

2. Build a new wet process darkroom. Finding an enlarger is the main problem; I may have to construct my own (an enlarger is essentially a reverse of a camera).

My major goals for 2016 are: 1. Network with PPA members in the Pensacola, FL area, so as to be better able to refer clients when they are not a good match for my photographic vision. Maybe a monthly field trip, or something as well. I don’t see my fellow PPA members as competitors; I view my colleagues as collaborators. There are more than 40k households (not counting active duty military) in my immediate area with incomes greater than $100k per year, so there are enough clients to keep us all busy and profitable (not to mention the annual flood of tourists to the Emerald Coast).

3. Better document my business and photo process into a written SOP in order to track inefficiencies and general improvements. Sort of like a business play that is a living document that gets tweaked as needed. What are your goals for 2016? How do you want to build your business, skills, technique or artistry? Sarah Ackerman manages all things social media for PPA and Imaging USA. When she’s not living on the internet, she loves improv comedy, going on wilderness adventures, gallivanting around the globe, knitting, wood working and yoga.
