President’s Message
This is my first opportunity to address all of the great members of TAPPA as your president. I have much to learn and I will ask each of you to please talk to me if there is something that you think could be done better. The theme of my presidency will be change. Change scares every one of us, but without accepting change we will be like the dinosaurs and become extinct. We constantly hear that the Millennials don’t think like we do. Then I would suggest that our challenge as non-millennials is to learn how they do think and rather than trying to force them to think like we do, let’s learn how to work together to achieve our common goals. The TAPPA Board of Directors polled the members to get your ideas on the best way to move forward and make our organization more viable. You are now seeing the results of those surveys. We have chosen to make the format of the meeting a little different. We will still begin our meeting at 6:00 pm with comraderies and networking. Michael Landes has agreed to take over the responsibility for Salon at our meetings. This, I believe, is a move in the right direction. His experience working with the Judges at our annual salon judging will provide stability and incentive for members to put themselves out there for critique. We will continue to work to make this aspect of our meetings more meaningful. Probably the biggest, and most obvious, change is the location of our meetings. We will be meeting at the Holiday Inn at the corner of Westshore Blvd and Cypress St. There is plenty of parking in the park garage at the back of the hotel, parking is free, and the path to the hotel is covered so that you will not need to carry an umbrella when you come to the meetings. Food and drinks are available in the hotel either before or after the meeting, but our meetings will not include dinner. We solicit your inputs about how this is
working. We, the Board of Directors, will review your inputs after 3 months. As your president, I would ask for your support. I do not ask that you agree with every decision. I can discuss your concerns, I can present them to the Board and we will make a decision. If you disagree, I would ask that you talk to me or another Board member. Please do not just criticize what we do, talk to me about your concerns. It is very important that we work together to make TAPPA a more viable organization in the Tampa Bay area. You talk with other professional photographers; find out why they do not consider TAPPA a valuable part of their profession; offer them the opportunity to come to one of our meetings; let them see for themselves what we have to offer. Presiden’t Message Continued
I am still looking for volunteers who are willing to step up to the responsibility of 50-50 and door prizes. We need someone willing to take responsibility for the Audio Visual equipment to ensure that it is available for our speakers. If there is no member who thinks that these jobs are an important part of our meetings and deserve to be continued, then I would have to believe that the members have expressed their feelings concerning those aspects of the meeting. This may sound harsh, but being a member of TAPPA is more than just attending a meeting and hearing a speaker. Those who get the most out of TAPPA are those who give the most to TAPPA. I want and need your help.
