President’s Message
I want to start out my first president message by saying how honored I am to be your president for 2018. Looking forward this year, we have a lot of exciting events and speakers planned and we start the year out with “Ben Wilmore.” Ben is an internationally known photographer, educator, speaker and a good friend of mine and I feel very lucky to have Ben speaking to TAPPA this year. This will be a program you will not want to miss. As TAPPA is a volunteer organization I would like to ask any member that would like to get involved with a committee or help out in any way please contact me as we do have some committee chair positions open and we could use your help. Working on a committee is a great way to meet and get to know your other TAPPA members better and create relationships that will benefit you in many ways. As this message will be coming out at the beginning of the year I’d like to take a few minutes to talk about a B-plan. I say B-plan because many people become frightened or feel overwhelmed when they hear the words “business plan,” but if you do not create or work on a plan for your business you are losing out of potential work and income. I have found that as I talk to photographers around the country that the ones that are the most successful are the ones that take the time to plan out their year and make goals for themselves. Setting goals is one of the most useful ways of organizing your efforts in planning the way your photography studio is going to grow. When I create my own goals for the year I start with shortterm goals, anywhere from one to three month, then goals for the year and long-term goals that can be from 3 to 5 years ahead. I start by looking
where I would like to be by the end of the year and then work backwards with shorter-term goals that will get me to that point. I find this helps make the task not as overwhelming as it might seem when you’re looking at a blank computer screen. In a short space I have here I don’t have time to go into all the details and besides there are plenty of articles on the web that do a much better job and go more in depth than I ever could. What I wanted to start here was the idea of planning where you want to be at the end of the next year, as there are far too many creative people that fail because they do not plan and make goals for themselves. I look forward to seeing all of you in January for the first meeting of TAPPA this year. Best, Randy Van Duinen M.Photog.M.Artist. Cr. CPP FDPE FDAE FSA TAPPA Tribune

Ben Willmore
Lessons Learned: On the Road, Behind the Lens & Pushing Pixels
Ben Willmore has spent over a decade as a Technomad (technology-enabled nomad): His full-time home is a lovingly restored vintage bus of 1930’s design that is jam packed with modern technology. As a photographer, Ben has shot in all 50 states, all seven continents and over 65 countries. Has been using Photoshop since before Adobe named it Photoshop and was one of the first dozen people to be inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame. He has written more than a dozen books on digital imaging and has taught at well over 100 events spread across the globe from Antartica to Zimbabwe. In this talk, Ben will share some of the most important things he’s learned over the years related to travel, photography and digital imaging. He’ll show you how his photographic mindset has matured over the years and share some uncommon digital techniques that he finds essential to producing quality images. He will also dispel common Photoshop myths that produce great clickbait videos, but have little true value. The knowledge and experience he shares is sure to improve your photography while entertaining you with images captured all over the world.
