President’s Message
Greetings all First, let me recap last month’s meeting. As you already know we decided to change it to a recruiting meeting rather than try to have a second Salon on a month with a scheduling change. I am very happy to report that we had 5 guests and 3 became members right on the spot with a fourth one planning to join this month. If we want TAPPA to remain a relevant organization we all need to work at bringing new photographers in. This is a great place for fellow photographers to find mentorship and advice as well as great monthly meeting topics and a chance to visit with other photographers in the area. By showing a new photographer how to elevate their work to a professional level and then encourage them to get paid a fair price for their craft is the best way that we can keep our standards and survive in a world of substandard but cheap competition. Jane Conner-ziser gave us a great presentation and helped us get ready for this seasons upcoming competitions. Reminder: We are now using a prepay method as our RSVP. Because we were losing money on people RSVPing and then not showing up we are now accepting your payment for the meeting as the RSVP. I want to welcome our 2 new board members. CJ Moment has accepted a position on the board and will be greeting you at the door. Lee Burgess will be fulfilling the remainder of Christine Reynolds term.
also to cancer. Tim and Mitzi Kelly were known throughout the state as much for their Christian Spirit as for Tim’s beautiful portrait work. Mitzi’s spirit will be missed by all. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Christine’s partner, Cheri and to Tim and his family. Have a safe 4th of July!
Benjamin Todd, CPP, FED
Christine Reynolds was a long time member of TAPPA and was very active as a photographer and an educator. In early June she lost her battle with cancer. This is a huge loss to TAPPA and she will be missed. More sad news from our extended state family of FPP was the recent loss of Mitzi Kelly, TAPPA Tribune

Selling
It’s all about who you know People hire those they know, like and trust. Here’s how to make it you.
By Chuck Vosburgh, CPP
There’s a saying that selling is a numbers game. It is to a large extent and the key is to get the most people to know, like and trust you. Those people are where your business will come frome either as direct business or referrals. The question is, what’s the easiest way to get in front of the most people long enough for them to know, like and trust you? The most effective way I’ve found is by networking. There are several choices for networking organizations and which suits you the best will depend on your personal preferences, the amount of time you’re willing to commit and the amount of structure you need to stay accountable for participation. Two of the most popular in the area are BNI and RGA They differ in structure but the principles are the same; people getting together to get to know each other and help each other out.
What goes on at a networking meeting The metting will start with your 30 second introduction. Be prepared with a great

introduction and practice it so you won’t go over 30 seconds. Meetings are tightly scheduled and abusing your 30 seconds is considered bad form. Members are allowed to get on the schedule to give a presentation to the group so everyone can know more about their business. In most meetings the presentation is 10-15 minutes. There will usually be some kind of business building or educational activity and time to talk with the other people at the meeting. If you’re reluctant to get up and introduce yourself or do a presentation it’s imperative that you get over it as quickly as possible. Practice to get comfortable or join Toastmasters ToastMastersInternational.org to get the training you need to be a good communicator. Your ability to speak will have a huge impact on your income, so do it now!
The meeting is just the start Going to meetings is the first step. At the meeting you’ll want to schedule a one-on-one meeting with someone. That’s where the connections are made. When you do your one-on-one don’t try to sell. Think of the person you’re talking to as a source of referrals, not as a single prospect. Make
sure you spend more time learning about their business and how you can help them than you do talking about yours. I met with a master of networking early on in my career who later became a good friend and mentor. He invited me to do a one-on-one with him and over lunch he asked me a lot of open ended questions about my business, my family, my life and everything else. Not in an interview kind of way, but a friendly geniunely interested way. Towards the end I was getting a little anxious about hearing his pitch. He hadn’t said anything about his business and whenever I tried to get him to, he just gave short answers and got back to me. I finally asked him when he was going to tell me about his seervices. He relplied “Well I’m a Financial Planner, you know what Financial Planners do.” I must have looked puzzled so he explained that it doesn’t matter if I’m a good prospect or not. He knows how many new clients he needs to meet his goals for the year and how many new people he needs to meet to get to that number. Then he told me the something I’ve remenbered since: “It doesn’t matter if you’re one of the yesses or one of the nos. You’re one
of the ones I have to meet to get to the number I need”. Incredible. You’ll never guess who our Financial Planner is and who I’ve recommended to countless people over the years.
What is a referral? Giving a person someone else’s business card is not a referral. Introducing two people who may benefit from knowing each other is a referral. That’s why you have to invest the time to really know people and for them to really get to know you. It’s no surprise that networking organizations are like small communities of friends. If you have a genuine interest in helping other people, people will refer to you. It’s just that simple. Stop trying to be a salesman and be more of a help to others and you’ll prosper in a networking environment.
It’s a process One of the biggest mistakes peole make in networking is that they give up too soon. Many people come and after a few month if they don’t get any business they quit. Your business has a long sales cycle. People may not need you or run TAPPA Tribune

into someone who needs you for a long time and if you’re not there when they do, someone else will be, so stay in the group! This is a long term investment and it will take some faith at first. Like most things in life you’ll get out of a newtorking group whay you put into it. Show yourself as one who get there early and helps out. Be the person who is always ready to help someone out. Your character is on display whenever you are out so think about what is good about you and be more of that!
ROI The big question is what’s the return on investment? If you haven’t been in a group more than a year you probably shouldn’t try to evaluate it. I spoke with others in our organization about theirs and one TAPPA member who goes to the meetings and events, does one-on-ones and participates reported that they spend about $1,000 last year in networking and got back $17,000 from it. Pat and my results have been similar even though we’re not participating nearly as much as we should. It’s up to you, you get back in direct proportion to what you put in.
