President’s Message
Stay Creative! By Randy Van Duinen – M.Photog. M.Artist. Cr. CPP FDPE FDAE FSA
As a professional photographer we can get very busy in our day-to-day work and sometimes find out that photography has just become a job, instead of the joy it once gave us. When I first started out as an assistant, I worked with two different photographers and saw this happen. Both were very successful, but photography had just become a job and I told myself at that point that I would never let that happen to me. There are two things that I do to keep me from having the same thing occur to myself, the first is education. By keeping myself educated on new processes and trends in the photography industry I keep myself current and competitive in my field. Learning something new in Photoshop and then trying it on my own allows me to be creative and push myself farther than I normally would. The second and probably more important is I give myself self-assignments. These self-assignments are my personal work that allow me to be creative without having to worry about getting images to a client. These self-assignments can be just a few hours, a day, or in some cases last over three years. I’ve seen articles where other photographers have taken their self-assignments and put them into their daily work and gotten new clients because
of it. I have found that I have also incorporated into my professional work what I’ve learned on my self-assignments and made myself a better photographer in the process. So, take a moment and think about something that you would really like to do and go for it. You may find that you’ve gotten some of your passion back for photography and also pushed yourself farther than you might have with your normal client’s work. Best, Randy

The Differentiation Factor Matthew J Peters
There is always someone out there willing to do what you do for less. One of the reasons that people price shop for services that we provide is because that is the conversation we both attract and entertain. What if your prospective clients knew that by hiring you they were going to receive the very best? What if they knew that everything was going to be taken care of for them? What if you could provide them a “Berns-level” experience?
