President’s Message

We are almost ¼ of the way through 2017. All those New Year’s Resolutions. I was having a difficult time determining what I wanted to share with you this month. So I started reflecting on my own motives and motivations. I asked myself, why am I a photographer? Not because it is an easy way to make money, because it isn’t. The world is not beating a path to my doorstep. There is a lot of competition out there. The mobile devise has made it so easy and convenient to take pictures that everyone questions why should I give you money to do what I can do myself? Not because it is not hard work, because it is. Marketing is a full time job that gets more complex every day. How do I make myself stand out from the crowd? Certainly not because it is inexpensive, because it is very expensive. I am a photographer because a smile crosses my lips every time I show a mother the beautiful result of capturing a moment in time to give her forever. I have the privilege of giving Mom a priceless gift. Every one of you are photographers for your own reasons. I would hope that your reason is not just to make money. There is so much more value to the art of photography than just money. Each image is a masterpiece creation. Most of the time, I think you would agree that is true for your work also. There are always those images that we need to go to school on to figure out what went wrong. We also experience the image that we thought was outstanding, but our peers find mistakes that we have overlooked. The more often we allow our colleagues the opportunity to help us identify those little mistakes that make our images less than perfect, the faster we get better. That is why we have Salon each month. That is why we enter competition to gain merits. It is not the merit, it is the improvement in our skills - that is the goal of competition. Listen to the critique, not only of your image, but all of the images. You’ll be amazed how much you can learn. I have not heard a single

photographer ever say that they were worse off because they competed. I have heard hundreds of photographers say that they really started to create better images when they started to compete. This is one of the great benefits of being a member of TAPPA. Don’t waste it. One last thought. We have reached the point when it is time to pay the piper. In order for TAPPA to provide the great programs to keep you informed what is happening in the world of photography, we need the support of our members. The time to pay for membership for 2017 has passed. If you have already paid your dues, thank you. If you have not yet paid, you can pay with PayPal or you can bring a check to the next TAPPA meeting on March 14th. The value that you get for such a small investment is tremendous. Remember, if you want to be an eagle, you need to fly with the eagles. TAPPA has nationally recognized photographic eagles. Come fly with us. TAPPA Tribune

How to Paint Your Own Canvas Photography Backdrop By Amanda Pratt, CPP

As a photographer, I like to have creative control over as many aspects of my work as possible. Creating props and backdrops helps make my work unique and even inspires me when I am out of fresh ideas.

Step 1: Prepare your painting area

I started painting my own canvas backdrops because a) hand painted backdrops are expensive and b) it helps inspire new work and, at the very least, offers new options for my clients. I shoot mainly high school seniors so it is important to my clients that each year I am able to provide unique images that aren’t the same as the year before. To get started on this project, here is a list of items you will need:

Supplies: One sponge roller One package of mixed sponges One 64 oz container of white gesso One 9 x 12 canvas drop cloth One 10 x 25 plastic drop cloth 4 quarts of Behr (I like premium plus) flat interior house paint: Supernova Liquid mercury Orion Gray Blackout Total Cost: $146.55 (I already had regular paint rollers and pans on hand)

TAPPA Tribune

Lay out your plastic drop cloth and cut it in half so you have two 10 x 12.5” plastic sheets overlapping each other. Tape down drop cloth to the floor to secure it and make sure there are no wrinkles or they will leave wrinkles in the canvas. I worked in my garage. Lay out your canvas onto the plastic drop cloth.

Step 2: Priming Your Canvas

Step 3: Apply the Base Coat of Paint

Mix your Gesso in a bowl one cup water, one cup gesso and pour into paint pan.Â

I used the middle two colors as my base coat - Applying Liquid Mercury in the center of the canvas in an oval shape & then Orion Gray on the outer edges. I then mixed the two colors together and blended the middle color between the edges of the two.

Apply gesso mixture with a roller, working your way from the center outward. Make sure every inch of the canvas is thoroughly covered - this step took me a whole day and several mixtures of gesso Let dry - it helps to put a couple fans pointed at the backdrop

The paint dried very quickly for me, so I had to work fast - The whole job of painting only took me a few hours. You can add water to this paint since it is acrylic, which can help the paint stay wet enough to blend properly. This is what I did with my most recent backdrop and it worked well. You can also add water to the paint to thin it out. Be creative and play around with these techniques!

Step 4: Sponge Away! Once you have worked your way into the center of the canvas and have covered most of it with the sponge dabs, mildly wet your sponge roller and dab into the dark and middle base paints and roll excess off. LIGHTLY roll over the dabs to blend through and take the sharp look out of the textures. Do this repeatedly until you have reached a texture level you are happy with.

Step 5: To Store First, place the lightest and darkest colors on separate paint pans. Next, Use the sponge roller for the darkest color and roll on outer corners and edges. Third, Take a very textured sponge from your miscellaneous sponges and stand in the dry center of your canvas. Hand dab the light color all around the rough lines where the colors transition. Be free with this - place dabs of light all over the canvas focusing on center areas and use the same dabbing motions repeatedly for consistency. Fourth, switch to the darkest color and repeat the step above. Fifth, switch back to the mixed base color and repeat steps above.

Leave dry and roll to store when finished - you can roll it on an old seamless paper cardboard tube or aluminum conduit pipe if you have a backdrop support system you use already.
