President’s Message
Look Ahead Thanksgiving dinner and its accompanying guilt are past. You’ve survived Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and the Cyber Monday sales. Take a deep breath. Most of 2015 is receding in the rear view mirror while the final stretch—another classically busy December—looms ahead. In consideration of my absent newsletter for November, I encourage you to take a few minutes to review all the good things you experienced this year. Think about trips you’ve taken, family you’ve spent time with, friends new and old who’ve enriched your life, and turn your focus ahead. What do you discover? Parties to give and attend. Presents to buy, wrap, and ship. Decorating to do. Cards to write and send. And somewhere in the bustle, a minute or two to put your feet up and rest. Great! Imagine you’re doing that right now. Take a minute to do a check list, not for December, but for 2016. Most of us collide with the New Year exhausted, partied out, and carrying more weight than we ever planned. Not to worry. A new year is coming.
• If you need to take better care of your health, find a way to do it.
• Try photographing something you don’t usually capture.
Set goals now, and like a batch of simmering cider or homemade soup, resolve to enjoy December and arrive at January prepared for joy and success.
• Clear out old equipment you don’t use. Give it away or sell it.
• Enter competitions.
• Nurture your family and friend relationships.
• Celebrate every success you have.
• Take a class to improve your skills.
• Mentor someone. Do it for a few weeks once a week or longer if you choose.
• Support your TAPPA leadership team.

December, 2015
When the end of the year arrives, we’re often so tired, we feel daunted by the very idea of setting goals. I hope I’ve made it simple. Use this checklist to help you create a positive plan for 2016, so when the clock strikes midnight on December 31, you’ll be ready to go. It’s been a pleasure and blessing to serve you as president. Wonderful memories will remain clear images in my mind and heart. Thank you for all the help and support you’ve given me. Wishing you a beautiful Holiday Season and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2016! Susan

What your yard guy can teach you about your photography business By Chuck Vosburgh, CPP
Imaging being in a business that is very competitive, easy to get started, doesn’t require any special license or degree. One that most people could easily do themselves with easily available inexpensive equipment and there are many lower cost options than you. If you think that only describes photography, think again. The person that takes care of your yard has all those and a perception that his or her job requires no skill. That’s a tough business, and there’s a chance that person may be earning more than you. If you don’t think a person can start a lawn service and become a millionaire, meet George Packard. George has a series of YouTube videos on the business of lawn care and I’ve learned a lot from him. As photographers we usually rely on other photographers for sales, marketing and business advice. I suggest digging deeper. The hazards of relying solely on people in your own industry for sales advice is that it’s impossible not to compare your own results with theirs and it’s the same information your competitors can easily get. The same sales principles apply to all businesses and there are a lot of resources out there to help you get better. One classic book I recommend is How to Master the Art of Selling by Tom Hopkins.

This man may be earning more than you
Beware of anyone who says that sales is different now and they have some new secret. The venues of communication have changed, and will continue to change, but human psychology hasn’t changed in 6,000 years of recorded history. The good news is that if you’re good at sales, you can earn a good living doing whatever you choose to do. So, what are your favorite books or techniques on sales? Let me know at Chuck@ChuckVosburgh.com
