President’s Message
Greetings all. We are almost out of the thick of summer heat. Are you gearing up for these busy shooting months coming up between now and Christmas? Do yourself one great big favor and take a very fulfilling break by attending FOCUS. FOCUS is the annual convention of our parent organization, the FPP (Florida Professional Photographers). FOCUS is held at The Florida Hotel and Convention Center, on Sand Lake Road in Orlando. Convention dates this year are September 10-12, 2016. If you are a member of FPP your registration fee is prepaid but you must go online to register to get that deal. If you are not yet a member of FPP you should consider joining now and attending the convention, or register and pay $150 per day. You can register and become a member all at once by clicking that option. FOCUS is our annual get-together for all the members around the state. There are many educational opportunities. Speakers this year include (but are not limited to) Hanson Fong, Carl Caylor, Jim Cunningham, William Branson, Bruce Berg, Pete Wright, Kira Derryberry, Jill Heinerth, and Brooke Shaden. Topics range from newborns, underwater, fairytale photography, and SEO to such topics as wedding photography kickstart, success in a saturated market, setting yourself apart and Photoshop. This very fun and social event is actually a great investment in your business and creativity. Salon is the annual competition that is judged during the convention. Images are due online September 2 or if you can’t make that you can pay a late fee and upload them by September 9. There is quite a list of judges coming in to judge on the Saturday and Sunday of FOCUS. You can watch the judging in person, or in a special are called the Lounge (Where you don’t have to be quiet and things get rowdy) or on the
printcompetition.com portal. Salon awards and annual awards will be presented on Monday evening. Go to fpponline.org and areyouinfocus.com to get all of the information and to get registered. Check the TAPPA page or FPP page on Facebook if you are looking for a roommate. REMEMBER: IMPORTANT NOTE!! We will have the regular TAPPA meeting on Tuesday September 13th, 2016. Many people stay overnight after the awards program but you will all still have plenty of time to get back into town and be at the meeting. Chuck Vosburgh will be our speaker and he always has some great information to share. Take advantage of these opportunities and you will grow as a photographer. Benjamin Todd, CPP

Selling
What are your attitudes about money?
By Chuck Vosburgh, CPP
Let’s dig deep into what keeps most of us from becoming wealthy; our beliefs about money. Think back to your first memory of a discussion about money. Think about the comments you heard at home growing up about money, wealth and rich people. Did you ever hear these: Money is the root of all evil
Now think about your choice of career. What have your heard about creative professionals, and photographers in particular? Have you heard any of these:
Rich people are evil
Starving artist
Money isn’t everything
You can’t make any money doing that
Money can’t buy happiness
The industry is dying
We’re not made of money
No one gets rich doing this
Easy come easy go
No one respects art anymore
Filthy lucre
No one wants to pay
We’ll never be rich
Those people are ruining the business
The system is against you It takes money to make money It must be nice I could go on and on with ones I’ve heard. What would you conclude from this information? Money is bad, correct? How many times have you heard
4
it? Does repetition influence beliefs? Yes it does, it’s called brainwashing and creates a condition called cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance is a belief that is held in spite of logic, reasoning and facts that refute it.
TAPPA Tribune
Again I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. These negative attitudes repeated begin to infect your mind and when you come up against obstacles, which will come, these attitudes start sounding true. Before you know it you have an unconscious belief that you can’t make it and even if you could you shouldn’t.
The first step is to be aware
with nothing and did well?
Start giving conscious thought to your attitude and the self-talk you have about your business, success and money. If you think rich people are evil why would ever want to be rich? If you think no one makes any money as a photographer, why even try? Do you see how this can and will doom your chances of ever having even moderate success? If you believe these things you will not make it. I know, harsh words. I want you to succeed and your success isn’t just important, it’s vital!
What about photography?
I call B.S.!
The good news
First and foremost, all those negative beliefs range from untrue to bald-faced lies. “Money is the root of all evil” is a misquoted Bible verse taken out of context. Rich people are not evil. There are the same percentage of good and bad people among rich, middle class and poor alike. Money isn’t everything? Who said it was? “Money can’t buy happiness”. Maybe, but lack of money can bring misery. “The system is against you” is a matter of opinion We’re all under the same system and some do very well. “It takes money to make money” is false. How many people do you know who started
You can make it! Everyone has the same chance to make it big. Some will have luck and some won’t but it’s still possible. There are too many people who have come before us with greater obstacles and have not only overcome, but have flourished. You can do it!
If you can’t make it as a photographer, what about all the ones we admire who are making a great living? There are a lot of people in this very organization who do extremely well and I’m certain that they will tell you that they have no inherent advantage over anyone else. Look in the mirror. Are you the one holding you back? It took me a very long time to realize I was.
There’s a good book on the subject that is worth a read. Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker. Start today with a fresh mind and work to make your vision a reality! TAPPA Tribune
