President’s Message

Normally

, I would not comment on events in the news, but the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey compels me to address this. There is no doubt that the devastation and human misery this storm has created will be etched in our memory forever. It is gratifying to see everyone working together as Americans to help those who have been affected. Please help any way you can. I mention this only because it gives those of us who were not directly affected by this storm the opportunity to look at our own processes and to do some soul searching as to what we would do if the target had been Tampa and not Houston. I suspect that we all have backups for our data, backups for our images. Have you thought about that filing cabinet with all your invoices? If you had a maximum of two days to prepare for a storm that you mainly ignored because it was just a tropical storm that suddenly turned into a raging category 4 hurricane, would you know what you were going to take with you. Would you know where everything was? Could you pack it all into your vehicle? Would you have enough room? A much more sobering question would be, if you were out of town, would someone else know what to take and where to find it? I would recommend that you start preparing by looking at your equipment, your data, your storage – both digital and physical and determine what is critical for the continuation of your career as a photographer and what is nice to have, what can be replaced. Then you need to do the same thing for your personal life. When you think that you have everything covered, sit down with your family and/or partners and discuss your plan with them. I’m sure that they will have a slightly different view of what is

important. Make sure you all agree when you are finished. Then I would recommend that you write out a checklist prioritized by importance of what to take, where to find it, How to pack it. Make sure that you include your food and water and personal hygiene items and medicines. This checklist should be printed and put into a folder in your filing cabinet clearly marked so that you can find it in the worst of circumstances. I would also recommend that you put a copy in the cloud someplace so that you can access it from your phone or laptop. I am not trying to be a harbinger of doom. We have seen very graphically what Mother Nature can do. We dodged this bullet. We have the opportunity to critically look at what we would/could do. Now is the time to ask the tough questions. The reality is that a very large percentage of the businesses in Texas will never reopen their doors for business. That includes many of our comrades. TAPPA Tribune
