Change Change is something I’ve become accustomed to. I’ve been doing this since 1986. That means my studio has survived more than a handful of stock market crashes and recessions – one that lasted several years (in fact, I’m not so sure it’s over yet). I’m now in my fifth retail location, and survived the apocalyptic hell known as the “digital transition.” After an explosion in competition, a dried up family/children market whose thirst for portraits is quenched on a daily basis by their own cell phones, and seeing brides no longer willing to appreciate or properly compensate professional photographers for providing one of the most difficult jobs associated with their big day, I have managed to remain in business. I’m still here because I’ve changed. I’ve adapted to the change in the marketplace, the tastes and demands of my clients, and done so while continuing to provide quality images and stellar customer service at a price that remains palatable. Without realizing it at the time, I can look back and see that I reinvented myself and my business on average of every five years. By doing so, I not only gave my business a cosmetic facelift, but I reevaluated the markets I was servicing and identified new markets to pursue. I believe my longevity is due to my ability to adapt to change, and if I can offer you one tidbit of wisdom it would be to keep your knees bent and be prepared for shifts in the market. It’s a fickle thing, this business of photography. Today it’s all yarn-hatted newborns, tomorrow it’s ducks. I dunno. See you Tuesday. Kevin Newsome President

PARISH KOHANIM BIOGRAPHY Commitment, passion and love to elicit “magical beauty” is the paradigm of Parish’s intuitive philosophy of three decades of photography. Consistently original, diverse, inventive and timelessness are the hallmarks of his photography. His uncommon use of colors, whether vibrant or pastel, as well as multitudes of tonalities in his stunning and luminous black & white images have become his distinctive and unique signature and style.
Parish Kohanim What does it take to find the artist within and create? Discover the needed inspiration and motivation with Parish Kohanim, as he reveals his versatile and exciting career of over three decades. He’ll share images throughout his successful years in commercial and fine art photography, giving “behind the scenes” anecdotes and explaining what it takes to put a major shoot together and execute it successfully. Educational as well as inspirational, Parish will also share his philosophy and passion about the art of photography. You’ll learn about breaking old habits and connecting beyond the visual sense for the absolute best image-making. Parish is currently working on a unique coffee table book on Cirque performers and also speaks about their incredible physical feats and their drive for perfection, along with a series of production shots and videos taken during their many sessions. Come meet Parish’s challenge to see—and expose—the beauty in all things that surround us in our everyday lives, from landscapes and florals to the human form.

Creative Compositing and Special FX Corey Barker
Learn how to take your images from the camera to a polished concept using techniques and effects used by the most advanced Hollywood designers. Covering everything from extracting subjects to choosing and combining background elements and then tying them all together into a seamless composite. Corey has come a long way since obtaining his BFA in Illustration from the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida in 1996. From his first position as a graphic designer at a city newspaper, to 8 years of design and print work for a large format printing and graphics company, to becoming an award-winning designer and illustrator; Corey finally made the decision to pursue his dreams. In 2006, he took a leap of faith by submitting a resume packet to a company he admired when a position became available and because of that leap, instead of being just an attendee at Photoshop World that year, he was interviewed for the position with Kelby Media Group as the next “Photoshop Guy.” When he landed the job it was a dream coming true. Since then, Corey has been the face for Graphic Design as an Education and Curriculum Developer for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) and Kelby Training. He is a featured Instructor for both the Photoshop World and Adobe Max conferences and is considered to be an expert in Photoshop 3-D.

They just don’t realize what they are missing By Booray Perry
I’m sitting in a seminar (on a break) on the last day of FOCUS. It’s my second year coming to this convention for the Florida Professional Photographers Association. When I think of all the TAPPA members who have never come (and the photographers who are members of this group who aren’t in TAPPA) I feel bad because I know that they just don’t realize what they are missing. Yes, there are seminars on every subject imaginable that will make you a better photographer and more successful business person. But, there is so much more. Print competition is incredible, fun, frustrating and probably the thing that will make you better than you thought possible.

The trade show allows you to talk to so many people first-hand and get answers to any questions you have. When is the last time you were looking at a business website and had a question? Well, at the trade show there’s someone right there to answer your question, and he or she probably owns the company! And I won’t even mention the $200 in free stuff I’ve managed to snag from vendors and door prizes. But there’s one thing that I think is vital, valuable and important that you never see in the brochure. It’s the other photographers you meet. Sitting at the bar talking shop with people who are better than you, with more experience, will give you so much. The value of having a large group of friends who have been there, done that is invaluable.
You’re not alone. You think you can do it by yourself, watching videos online and posting to forums and maybe you can but it’s a lot tougher than it needs to be. Everyone in Hollywood will tell you that going to The Academy Awards isn’t nearly as important as going to the after party. That’s where you become friends with Meryl Streep. Go to the convention next year. You’ll be glad you did.

Lissa Hatcher
Lissa Hatcher has been quietly making waves for the past thirteen years of her artistic career with her mysterious imaginings and dreamlike hauntings. Honored with Photographer of the Year, year after year, winning many Fuji and Kodak awards. She has been published many times in magazines, the PPA Loan Collection and PPA Showcase book and has even been honored with a Kodak Elite Award. Her award winning work is highly conceptualized and sentimental with a surrealistic flair. Working as an art director and editor, she finds herself leaving behind the traditional world of photography and portraiture. Conceptualizing and photographing all of her images, preferring to blend pixels and paint in post production. Don’t get confused by impossibility however, only a tiny bit of her work is created in post, in fact it is often whispered that her shoots look like tiny movie sets where characters play out scenes like actors. It’s very importat to understand it’s as much about process as it is the final image, after all many of her images come to her while she’s asleep and dreaming. If a bed has to be flaoating in water, you had better believe someone close to her (usually her husband) will be building that bed! Lissa often feels her pieces are like children with their own stories to tell, which is why on her off time she will be writing short stories and snippets about her little figments. You will never find her repeating herself, choosing instead to create new worlds as she goes along. She would call it “portal jumping”. Lissa is currently living her dream after many military moves and a ton of support from all around the globe. You can find her in Tampa, Florida making thoughts into things in the land of fine art - no so quitely might we add

Delegates Report
The TAPPA Tribune is published monthly for the membership of the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association. Its purpose is to share knowledge and insight with the photographic industry. The deadline for submission of articles and ad changes is the 15th of the month. Permission is hereby granted to reprint the contents of this newsletter, provided the authors and The TAPPA Tribune are recognized as the source. The ideas and views expressed do not necessarily reflect the policies of the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association; they are solely those of the author.
We had a Delegates and Presidents meeting during FOCUS 2014. Kevin and I both attended it. The FPP Board continues to work very hard to get information out to the members. They are looking at Florida Flash as a printed way to get information to everyone and they are thinking about an FPP App that would keep everyone up on the latest events. Our next Delegates meeting will be on Monday November 3, 2014 after the Fall Seminar – featuring Steve Kozak, in Orlando. One theme that always comes up at these meetings is information about anyone available for scheduling as a guest speaker. I have given out the information on all of the speakers from TAPPA that I know about so if you are new to the circuit or have a new presentation available let me know so I can pass the word along.
Thanks. Julie Johnson

More Brilliance In The Eyes
Sharpen Tool 2.0
To make the eyes pop, make a selection of the iris (you can use the Quick Selection tool [W]), and then add an Exposure adjustment layer. If you drag the Exposure slider to the right, you’ll get brighter eyes. But if you also drag the Offset slider to the left, you’ll get more contrast/detail. This is a very easy and fast technique if you like to brighten eyes with details.
If you want to do selective sharpening in Photoshop, you duplicate a layer, sharpen the whole thing, and erase the parts you don’t want; but there’s a better way. Select the Sharpen tool (you’ll recognize it as one you used once and never again because of excessive artifacts)--as of CS5, it just works. Make sure Protect Details is turned on in the Options Bar and paint the areas you want to sharpen.

Photoshop Tips
Set Clone Target Points The Clone Stamp tool (S) allows you to set up to five target points from which to clone, using the Clone Source panel. Just click one of the Clone Source icons (rubber stamp) at the top of the panel and then Option-click (PC: Alt-click) on a layer to set the source. Repeat for each Clone Source icon in the panel. This is helpful when you want to pull elements from different parts of an image or even from different images altogether. Provided by Pete Collins

Use Dodge/Burn Tools To Fix Selection Edges After you’ve cut out an object from one image, and added it to another, sometimes you’ll see areas of light or dark along the edges that were missed in the selection process. Setting the Burn tool’s Range in the Options Bar to Highlights or Midtones, you can darken the light parts to match the rest of the edge. Setting the Dodge tool’s Range to Shadows or Midtones lets you lighten the dark parts to match the lighter edges. Provided by Pete Collins
