President’s Message

Getting the Job Done! TAPPA often runs like a well-oiled machine. Occasionally, a wheel falls off, but there’s always someone stepping up to help put it back on. That’s how it works. TAPPA doesn’t run itself, it takes good people like yourself to carry the ball forward. Volunteering to help run TAPPA is a two way street. You win - TAPPA wins. The spokes of the TAPPA wheel are as follows: • Salon -assist the competition manager with Print of the Month and Salon • Door Prize - solicit and collect potential door prizes from vendors and distribute them at the meeting • Host - greet visitors and new members at the door and assist them at check-in, and introduce them to current members • 50/50 - sell tickets to raise funds for TAPPA’s Scholarship Fund • AV - Assist the AV chairman in setting up and tearing down TAPPA’s AV equipment each month • Newsletter - Write articles and obtain sponsorship for The TAPPA Tribune • Website - Assist the Webmaster in obtaining info for the TAPPA Website and Monthly Emails • Photography - Take photos of monthly activities for the TAPPA Tribune • Board Member - Meet monthly to make decisions in the best interests of the TAPPA membership All of these spokes are necessary to insure the success of TAPPA as an association, the membership as a whole, and yourself as a contributing member of your chosen profession. If you’d like to learn more about contributing to TAPPA and increasing your value within the photographic community, please contact any of our board members, or me directly, at 813-968-2810. See you Tuesday! Kevin E. Newsome TAPPA President

This Month’s Program

Creative Compositing and Special FX Corey Barker

Learn how to take your images from the camera to a polished concept using techniques and effects used by the most advanced Hollywood designers. Covering everything from extracting subjects to choosing and combining background elements and then tying them all together into a seamless composite. Corey has come a long way since obtaining his BFA in Illustration from the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida in 1996. From his first position as a graphic designer at a city newspaper, to 8 years of design and print work for a large format printing and graphics company, to becoming an award-winning designer and illustrator; Corey finally made the decision to pursue his dreams. In 2006, he took a leap of faith by submitting a resume packet to a company he admired when a position became available and because of that leap, instead of being just an attendee at Photoshop World that year, he was interviewed for the position with Kelby Media Group as the next “Photoshop Guy.” When he landed the job it was a dream coming true. Since then, Corey has been the face for Graphic Design as an Education and Curriculum Developer for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) and Kelby Training. He is a featured Instructor for both the Photoshop World and Adobe Max conferences and is considered to be an expert in Photoshop 3-D. After becoming

a contributing writer for Scott Kelby’s CS4 Down and Dirty Tricks, Scott handed the D&D baton over to Corey and was told make it his own. Lissa Hatcher

Lissa Hatcher has been quietly making waves for the past thirteen years of her artistic career with her mysterious imaginings and dreamlike hauntings. Honored with Photogrpher of the Yera year after year, winning many Fujiand Kodak awards. She has been published many times in magazines, the PPA Loan Collection and PPA Showcase book and has even been honored with a Kodak Elite Award. Her award winning work is highly conceptualized and sentimental with a surrealistic flair. Working as an art director and editor, she finds herself leavng behind the traditional world of photography and portraiture. Conceptualizing and photogrphing all of her images, preferring to blend pixels and paint in post production. Don’t get confused by impossibility however, only a tiny bit of her work is created in post, in fact it is often whispered that her shoots look like tiny movie sets where characters play out scenes like actors. It’s ery importat to understand it’s as much about process as it is the final image, after all many of her images come to her while she’s asleep and dreaming. If a bed has to be flaoting in water, you had better beieve someone close to her (usually her husbnad) will be building that bed! Lissa often feels her pieces are like children with their own stories to tell, which is why on her off time she will be writing short stories and snippets about her little figments. You will never find her repeating herself, choosing instead to create new worlds as she goes along. She would call it “portal jumping”. Lissa is currently living her dream after many military moves and a ton of support from all around the globe. You can find her in Tampa, Florida making thoughts into things in the land of fine art - no so quitely might we add

Deep Eye Sockets

Micro Control Of Scrubby Sliders

If your subject has dark eye sockets, press Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J) to duplicate the Background layer, then change the layer blend mode to Screen to brighten the entire image. Option-click (PC: Altclick) the Add Layer Mask icon (circle in a square) to hide this brighter layer behind a black mask. Press D to set your Foreground color to white; choose a small, soft-edged Brush (B); then paint over the entire eye-socket area to brighten that area. Now, lower the layer Opacity until the brightening matches the surrounding skin.

Whenever you see an input box with numbers, hover your cursor over the text next to that box and you’ll see a double-sided arrow. Click on the text and drag to change the values. Hold down the Option (PC: Alt) key as you drag and the sliders change at 1/10 speed. This allows you to get a precise setting. Hold down the Shift key and the amount will rapidly change at 10x the speed.

Bypassing Camera Raw If you have a file with Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) settings already applied to it and you want to simply open that file in Photoshop--bypassing ACR-do this: In Bridge, hold down the Shift key as you double-click on the RAW file. It will open in Photoshop using the current ACR settings. Note: Even if you have ACR set to open RAW files as smart objects, this shortcut will override that option and the file will open as a regular layer, not a smart object.

Creating Glossy Lips If you see a shiny highlight on your subject’s lips, and you want to make it look glossier, duplicate the Background layer then change your layer blend mode to Screen to brighten the entire image. Option-click (PC: Alt-click) the Add Layer Mask icon to hide this brighter layer behind a black mask. Press D to set your Foreground color to white; choose a small, soft-edged Brush (B); and paint over those white highlight areas on the lips and they’ll get even glossier. Provided by Scott Kelby
