President’s Message

Round Two Comes to a Close

A little back story... TAPPA was formed in my camera room in June of 1996 with about 30 enthusiastic photographers. My wife, Kaye, was the first Secretary, and served in that position the first two and a half years. Being the organizer she is, she was perfect for the job and now serves as the Executive Director for the Florida Professional Photographers, our state association. I was serving on the FPP board at the time, and didn’t want to take on any board duties for TAPPA, but I did serve as the Salon chair for those same two and a half years. I eventually did join the TAPPA board in 1999 and served as President in 2004. We had a great board, we always have, and I was very proud of all that was accomplished in the years I served on it. We went from a small band of homeless photographers (we moved our meetings around a LOT in those first few years) with no meals and only a $5 meeting fee, to finding our current home at the Doubletree with a full plated dinner. That move alone, increased our membership in one year, from about 35 to over 80 members. I rejoined the board about four or five years ago because I wanted so badly to just “hang out” with my friends one more night a month (the board meets at the Doubletree on the FIRST Tuesday of every month). Not only do I get the pleasure of their company, but I get to have a bit more involvement in the direction TAPPA goes in its efforts to educate our membership. This is vital to my growth as a professional. I’ve always been a bit attached to TAPPA and its membership, and as my second round as President comes to a close, I’m confident that TAPPA is in good hands in 2015. I’ll still be on this board for one more year, and who knows, maybe in another ten years I’ll make a third trip around the Sun. See you Tuesday! Kevin E. Newsome TAPPA President

This Month’s Program

Lissa Hatcher Lissa Hatcher has been quietly making waves for the past thirteen years of her artistic career with her mysterious imaginings and dreamlike hauntings.

Honored with Photographer of the Year year after year, winning many Fuji and Kodak awards. She has been published many times in magazines, the PPA Loan Collection and PPA Showcase book and has even been honored with a Kodak Elite Award. Her award winning work is highly conceptualized and sentimental with a surrealistic flair. Working as an art director and editor, she finds herself leavng behind the traditional world of photography and portraiture. Conceptualizing and photographing all of her images, preferring to blend pixels and paint in post production. Don’t get confused by impossibility however, only a tiny bit of her work is created in post, in fact it is often whispered that her shoots look like tiny movie sets where characters play out scenes like actors. It’s very important to understand it’s as much about process as it is the final image, after all many of her images come to her while she’s asleep and dreaming. If a bed has to be floating in water, you had better believe someone close to her (usually her husbnad) will be building that bed! Lissa often feels her pieces are like children with their own stories to tell, which is why on her off time she will be writing short stories and snippets about her little figments. You will never find her repeating herself, choosing instead to create new worlds as she goes along. She would call it “portal jumping”. Lissa is currently living her dream after many military moves and a ton of support from all around the globe. You can find her in Tampa, Florida making thoughts into things in the land of fine art - no so quietly might we add.

Message from the outgoing Salon Chair Constance Avellino

Hey everyone. I wanted to take a couple of moments and talk about Salon. I have been the salon manager now for 3 years and this month will be the last time I run the POM and then my last official duty as salon manager will be handing out the awards at the Christmas Banquet. This has been an interesting 3 years. And I have learned A LOT! I have learned about myself and I have learned quite a bit about photography and what it takes to merit. I have grown as a person but mostly I have grown as a photographer. For the first time ever during this 3 years of salon management - I merited, and then the next time I merited 5 of 6. I completely attribute that to what I have learned while doing salon. I love the forum of critique. It has helped me so much and even though I only merited one at our last salon, I knew going in that my most of my photos weren’t merit worthy and I knew going in that the one that merited would. That is from being on the front lines as salon manager. You can’t help but learn.

TAPPA Tribune

I love that I was the salon manager in charge of bringing us from the print salon to digital salon. It was tough to do and thankfully I have had great help in Chuck Vosburgh, Randy Van Duinen and Lee Burgess. The salon is not easy - keeping track of the points and being there dealing with issues that come up. I love what it has given me; a sense of self as a photographer. I really had little or no confidence before doing salon. Now I am more confident and a stronger photographer and person. I love salon. Nothing is more rewarding and frustrating at the same time than listening to judges critique your work. I have had one judge give me a 72 and one give me a 86 for the same image. But that is what is so great, you never know what they might be thinking. That feeling that I got when I got my first merit, nothing beats it. I want to say that Print of the Month is important. I have heard over the course of 3 years that Print of the Month is just a popularity contest but I disagree. I can tell almost immediately when I set

up every month which ones will win becasue they should win. This is what my salon manager eye now sees. I also want to say please participate. It’s important to get feedback and see what wins. Everyone should participate no matter how advanced you are. Veterans, show the newcomers what seasoned professional photography is. How better to lead then by positive example? I want to wrap up by saying a special thank you to Suzanna Meadows. Suzanna showed up by my side one night when I was first starting as salon manager and has been there almost every month since. That means so very much! She also reworked all the tags for the Print of the Month, the ballots and log sheet. She made my life as salon manager so much easier. So thank you Suzanna, I love you! So that’s it, thanks for putting up with this crazy outspoken salon manager for 3 years. Who knows what I might be up to next?

Delegate’s Report

28

Notes from FPP Delegates meeting November 3, 2014 The November 3, 2014 FPP Delegates meeting was held, in conjunction with the FPP Board Meeting, at The Florida Hotel on the Monday following the Fall Seminar, which featured Steve Kozak. Marty Grivjack called us to order and got us started on our prepared agenda before turning us over to interim Chairman Robin Phillips. Marty has accepted a position on the Board and we will vote to finalize our chair position at our next meeting. Robin asked us to all set a goal of getting our Sections to do their end of year paperwork on time. I know that TAPPA is always on top of this but here is another reminder: Due by Dec 1, 2014 to FPP Executive Director: -‐Corporate Annual Report (tax report filed the previous May) -‐Membership List -‐Affiliate Dues of $125 per Section -‐(Merit Request Forms now online) Due by December 31, 2014 to PPA: -‐Section By-‐laws (if changed); application for affiliate membership; a copy of your Articles of Incorporation; a signed copy of your Principles of Affiliation; your Federal Tax info (tax ID and letter of determination); proof of your published financial date (a copy of the guild newsletter with the financials published in it is acceptable); check for affiliation dues ($300, check with PPA to confirm). We worked on updating the information about each Section and each talked about things that have worked or not worked for getting new members and keeping existing ones. Some groups have cut back on the number of speakers they can bring in each year and are using the other meetings as activities to bring in new members and do creative shoots. When we talked about bringing in new members I offered that each of our Board members could invite 2 new potential members to a dinner meeting at the clubs expense. I was asked if we had an invite card and I told them I would check on that but believed it to be by word of mouth. The many different tiers of membership and different price structures were discussed. Most groups are putting the spouse, associate, student, retired, and other business professional memberships at a step lower price but with all benefits,
