Leaping to an "A" Safety Standard Designation Sebastian River Medical Center (SRMC) comes forward to the community with some exciting news!
The hospital was recently awarded an ‘A’ status from The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2019 Hospital Safety Grade. The designation recognizes Sebastian River Medical Center’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the country. This recognition is a credit to the
dedicated team of employees and medical staff who are committed to providing quality, safe, and compassionate patient care every day. Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peerreviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. Sebastian River Medical Center’s team effort earned an ‘A’ on the Hospital Safety Grade due to its strong safety culture, committed leadership, along with the engagement and empowerment of all employees. More than 100 physicians, working with nearly 500 clinicians, ancillary staff, and volunteers make up the Sebastian River Medical Center team. These take great pride in the work they do, especially when it comes to improving the patient bedside experience. SRMC has proudly implemented additional
clinical best practices, including hourly rounding, bedside shift reports, leadership rounding, and a host of other strategies and tactics to help improve patient safety. Sebastian River Medical Center, a Steward Family Hospital, is always striving to improve the health and safety of its patients and its community. Among its most significant improvements is a construction project that will add 90,000-squarefeet to its campus footprint, including seven operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, a bronchoscopy suite, and 48 private rooms. The $60-million expansion project will provide better patient access in a state-of-the-art safe and comfortable environment. Furthermore, Sebastian River Medical Center is always preparing for
the ever-changing needs of its community. The hospital has also added new medical and surgical equipment, a new integrated medical records system, and it has received awards and distinctions for services including orthopedics, bariatrics, cardiology, and stroke care. Proudly serving the Treasure Coast for more than 50 years and counting, Sebastian River Medical Center looks forward to continuing providing the safe and high-quality health care that its community deserves for years to come. Sebastian River Medical Center is located at 13695 US Highway 1, Sebastian, FL 32958. For more information about the services available to you and your loved ones, please visit SebastianRiverMedical.org or call 772-589-3186.

Building lives at Camp Haven. “As Camp Haven continues to help men build sound foundations to pursue successful lives, we’ve outgrown our current space and are in the beginning stages of adding space to increase the number of men we serve,” according to Camp Haven Board President Brian Korkus. Now, in its fifth year of operation, Camp Haven is executing on its strategic plan, which includes a facility improvement project. “Over the course of last year, we assessed how well we were operating with the additional men in our program and what changes we needed to make,” explains Korkus. “We created a three-year plan, portions of which focus on program and facility improvements that will enable us to further expand to help 32 men while having a better environment to work and live in.” The Camp Haven expansion plan faced a difficult situation. The former diner on the south side of the campus is in such a dilapidated condition that it cannot be used for any purpose. “So, we’ve had to make the tough decision that it needs to be demolished. The plan is to do that and replace it with a modern facility to house meeting and training space, individual and
group counseling space, a computer lab, dining and other group activities,” according to Korkus. “Moving these services to the new building will open spaces for six more men, increasing capacity from 26 to 32 men,” according to Chuck Bradley, Executive Director of Camp Haven. “But, providing better facilities is just as important as increasing the number of men we can serve. The building and layout will be a more conducive environment for learning and a much more pleasant atmosphere for meetings.” Camp Haven Board Member Gordon Stewart noted the increase in homelessness during trips to the Majestic Movie Theatre with wife Linda. Upon commenting about the problem, she challenged him to “do something about it,” which is what brought him to the Camp Haven campus. After observing the progress these men were making, Stewart became invested in the nonprofit’s mission. Noting the need for more space to provide workshops to help the men regain stability in both their personal and financial situations, Stewart shares. “A local banker has worked with the men on
their credit. We’re proud to say it worked so well that we recently had our first Camp Haven graduate buy a house, while still others have been able to return to their wives and children.” Stewart notes, “We’re only dealing with people who want help to get out of their current situation. Our niche is to help people who want help and are willing to make sacrifices to get it. It’s important to remember that you’re not just helping the homeless persons themselves. You’re helping their families, relatives, loved ones and the overall community.” Camp Haven is launching a capital campaign for $350,000 in the fall to raise funds for the completion of this much-needed project. To be part of this exciting program call (772)999-3625 or visit our website at www.camphaven.net.

The Young Pirates and The Glider-port By Susan Harris A good fairy tale has knights in shining armor, adventures, dragons and fairy godmothers. But if you want a great fairy tale add some "magic", young pirates, a glider-port in Vero Beach and The Treasure Coast Soaring Club Inc. and you have the story of one of the newest and most unusual 501C3's in the area. In 2016 some dynamic fly-boys got together to start a soaring club. They had a great location just west of I-95 and the outlet mall. They had pilots to fly the tow planes, gliders and new members joining all the time. But what they really needed was a cause: a mission. They decided to teach young people how to soar. The glider-port would become a training ground for the development of young soaring pilots.
Enter the young pirates. Evan Roseman, Murphy Sweeney and Mark Cartee of Martin County who all had a love of aviation and had met through this shared interest. They were introduced to Captain Randy Opat (Corporate Jet and Helicopter Pilot) and told him that they wanted to learn how to soar. Soaring is as close as you can be to being a bird. It's you, the sky and the thermals. Or as they say it's raw flying. The members of the Treasure Coast Soaring Club Inc believe that the future of anything in the world is the young. And the young were now on their doorstep. A year of pro-bono sweat equity plus dedication and the trio soloed. Watching the club in action is like watching a well oiled machine. They are inter-generational working together doing what they love and helping others to succeed at soaring. Plus they have restored
a vintage Phoebus soaring plane donated by Opat's friend Anthony Cirrincione of Arizona. Dedicated club member Simon Vaughn of Lantana transported the soaring plane by car in a 30 foot trailer from Arizona to Florida in 3 days. It now gleams and has a pirate on its tail painted by nationally acclaimed artist Steve Witucki. The young pirates tell me that they have learned self confidence, discipline and self assessment. However, the Pirates will be off to new adventures as they enter college this fall. The now beautiful Phoebus (with a 50' wingspan) is still here as are the dedicated instructors. They need new young pirates who want to soar and follow in the footsteps of other great soaring aviators such as Neil Armstrong, Captain Sully Sullenberger, John Denver and Steve McQueen. If you would like to learn more about this program please contact Bob Youngblood at 772-453-9999.

Solid State Drive
Jurgen / tech-owner
Basically it is considered a hard-drive without any moving mechanical parts and is based on memory technology. Why would you want one instead of a regular drive ? 1. Much much faster speeds, really makes a difference in how your PC boots and runs overall. .. Reliability - Instead of relying on old mechanical technology that basically works like a record player these drives are just like the name says, solid reliablility !
Where can I get a PC with one already installed or upgrade my PC ? At act computers of course. All of our custom built
Desktop PC’s now come standard with Solid State Drives, or we can give your slow old PC a new lease on life with a drive upgrade.
Youth Guidance Pathfinders Excel Club Assists “For The Love Of Paws” Recently, members of the Youth Guidance (YG) Pathfinders Excel Club volunteered to help “For the Love of Paws”, a not-for-profit organization in Fellsmere. Dog and cat food are donated to the organization for the pets of low-income families in our community. The YG Pathfinders Club took the donations for the dogs and cats and put them in individual bags for distribution. “The group loved helping out and had a wonderful time,” said Kim Prado, Youth Guidance Chair and Mentor. “This is just one of the many community service projects
that our Youth Guidance Excel Club has done this year.” The Youth Guidance Pathfinders Excel Club is designed for High School students to help to develop: leadership skills, civic engagement (by learning about public policy and taking on leadership roles), how to run a small business, how to save and invest money, and how to help fundraise for the community. In addition, the group is involved with child abuse prevention and volunteers throughout the community to assist those in need, which helps them develop skills to be an adult
who contributes to the Indian River County community. In fulfilling its mission, Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy (YG) is dedicated to enriching the lives of Indian River County youth through mentoring relationships that inspire trust, self-esteem and positive futures. If you are interested in learning more about Youth Guidance, please call 772.492.3933, or visit our website at www.youthguidanceprogram.org. The “For the Love of Paws” Pet Sanctuary provides peace of mind to Senior Citizens when they can no longer care for their pets, due to being placed into Hospice, Memory Care, Nursing Homes, Assisted Living or a Medical Procedure where they are placed into extended
Rehabilitation. Additionally, the “The Paws Meals on Wheels” program provides pet food to those in need who are having difficulty feeding their beloved Pets. The Pet Food Bank provides in excess of 6,000 pounds of Pet Food Monthly. For more information contact: 772-539-2417 or email info@pawspetsanctuary.org.

Doulas provide a helping hand and support during and after pregnancy for moms Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition offers one-of-akind Community Doula services and training programs – the first one ever in Florida. Charged by the state with the responsibility of assessing and implementing ways to improve maternal child health within Indian River County, Healthy Start created this program to bridge a gap in need and cultivate a mindset of community health advocacy.
You may be asking, what is a Doula? A Doula is a non-medical companion who supports a birthing woman by providing continuous care before, during, and after childbirth in the form of education, physical support, and emotional support. The results have been transformative – Doulas have been shown to have a great impact on birth outcomes and health literacy, with links to a decrease in post-partum depression, cesarean sections and pre-term labor. “Community Doula programs nation-wide have reported a decline in early term labor, which is one of the leading causes of infant mortality in Indian River,” according to Andrea Berry, Healthy Start CEO and graduate of the Doula training herself. Whether it is a first birth, or tenth, the program connects women to Doulas who are specially-trained to provide support during the pregnancy, birth and the early months of parenting. This includes single mothers who may be walking through their pregnancy
without a birthing partner or need a helping hand with resources. The service, funded by the John’s Island Service League, Indian River County Children’s Services Advisory Committee and Indian River County Impact 100, is complimentary to qualifying clients in Indian River County through Healthy Start. Since the program was launched in 2017, 25 community members have trained to be certified Doulas, with 14 of those Doulas actively working with families. “This program has already shown a huge savings to community with the improved birth outcomes such as reduction in cesarean rate, reduction in preterm and low birth weight births and improved breastfeeding rate. We have seen a huge rise in demand for doula services and are set to exceed this goal in 20192020” says Mrs. Berry. This successful Community Doula
program is just one more way that Healthy Start is paving a path to providing unique, free programs available to every mother, every baby, every family. For more information about the services offered, visit www.irchealthystartcoalition.org or call 772-563-9118.

Helping kids through basketball and mentoring Crossover Mission was founded 5 years ago by two Vero Beach natives, Antoine Jennings and Cathy De Schouwer. It was their two sons, each elementary boys who wanted to play basketball, that brought them together. Time in the gym with their sons allowed them to see across the divide artificially put up by society and to become friends and, eventually, business partners. Crossover Mission is the culmination of a vision to join together, black and white, island and mainland, basketball and business, to support and redirect at-risk youth.
drop-out, gang involvement and incarceration. Crossover redirects their lives by providing structure, accountability, positive role models and exposure to broader life experiences.
Our Mission
Currently, Crossover supports 70 students, primarily boys, between the age of 8-18. They attend one of 19 elementary, middle and high
The mission of Crossover is to help the kids who need us most to become successful adults through a program of year-round basketball and one-to-one academic mentoring. The student athletes of Crossover often live in difficult family situations and are often surrounded by crime, violence and drug abuse. Because of this, they are at risk of school
The secondary purpose of Crossover is to build a bridge of friendship and understanding between cultures, starting at a young age, which will help to erode the walls of separation which continue to divide our society. It is a long road that takes hard work and commitment. Kids need positive mentors and a vision of excellence to see the road ahead.
schools throughout the county and all have a love of basketball. Each Crossover family pays just $50 a year to participate, making the program affordable to all. What makes Crossover unique? Crossover prides itself on the ability to go as deep as necessary to help every student succeed. When needed, Crossover has provided additional tutoring days, help with transportation, in-school advocacy with teachers and guidance counselors, access to sports physicals, help filling out necessary applications and providing support to find appropriate medical, legal or mental health resources. With a goal of successful adulthood, no Crossover student is ever alone on their journey, whether that path leads to high school graduation and job readiness, technical training or college and beyond. A Day in the Life Crossover students are picked up from their school and taken to the Crossover Academic Center for a hot meal (provided by The Source’s Dining with Dignity Culinary Program) and an hour of academic tutoring with their mentor. Academic mentors provide a caring adult who can help with homework assignments, build study skills and support long-term projects.
After tutoring, students are taken to basketball where they work on fitness, basketball fundamentals, and team building. Throughout the year, Crossover teams play games and participate in tournaments. One of the goals of the basketball program is to give students the skills necessary to successfully play on their school sports teams which helps foster a deeper engagement with their school. Crossover programs are funded by a combination of generous individual donations and local foundation grants. Donation can be made to Crossover Mission, 1965 42nd Ave, Suite 3, Vero Beach 32960. We can be reached at info@crossovermission.com or through our website at www.crossovermission.com

Once enrolled, members can expect numerous activities and field trips. Members participate in athletics, including soccer, basketball, swimming, and more! Embracing creativity is

Restaurant Review:
A Vero Classic With Ocean View Old favorites and new additions
By Susan Harris
You have to love a place that's made of pecky cypress logs, dates from the 1930's, has a view across the Atlantic overlooking a shipwreck and features jaunty umbrellas, wooden deck and sea grapes. The best part is that the food is fantastic. The menu features tried and true crowd pleasing favorites that have been passed down over the years or created by General Manager Lee E. Olsen who has been at the helm of Waldo's for the past 13 years and has a 40 year career in the food industry. And it shows. The food presentation is superb. As our appetizer we started with Mrs. Peter's Smoked Fish Dip - which is imported from Jensen Beach where it has been made for decades. Their motto is that we smoke everything but mermaids. I'm not a fish dip fan but I even had a few scoops. The consensus was that it had a nice smooth taste.
Mrs. Peter's Smoked Fish Dip and and a Voodoo
Photos by Scott Finney The newest addition to the Waldo's menu is the Southern BLT and it had my name written all over it. Fried green tomatoes, apple smoked bacon, leaf lettuce, Cajun mayonnaise served on Texas toast plus seasoned french fries and tasty pickles. It was hard to share but I did. On a scale of 1-10 it was a 12 and let me say they know how to do fried green tomato which is an art. Another member of the party chose "Crazy Harry's" Cobb Salad. (Named after a long ago Wado's manager) It's tremendous and served in a tortilla shell and could easily be shared. (But who would want to) The fresh diced chicken is topped by avocados, scallions, tomatoes, blue cheese, fresh bacon bits and has a special Dijon dressing. This Cobb Salad is not to be missed and it is the #1 favorite on the menu.
Southern BLT
Also popular is Waldo's Signature Chicken Salad served with pasta salad, homemade beet chips (which are incredible) mandarin orange and cantaloupe. The Beet Chips disappeared round the table. And our server assured us that if we wanted beet chips with a cheeseburger on our next visit it wouldn't be a problem. Trust me on this they are tasty. Chicken is of course fresh and you can taste the difference. Our resident fish lover decided to get the Catch of the Day which was red snapper blackened in Waldo's special secret spices on homemade saffron rice with mango salsa. This was very popular round the table with the snapper and the rice complimenting each other. I probably should have mentioned that we indulged in Waldo's Voodoo Juice served in a special souvenir 32 oz Malibu bucket featuring Malibu Coconut, Banana and Mango Rums and some cranberry and pineapple juice. It was like sipping Florida through a straw with a sea breeze for good measure. Interestingly enough this 32 ounce bucket has become a rite of passage in Vero Beach. Happy Hour runs 4-7 pm seven days a week at Waldo's and features an interesting mix of locals and visitors. Attire is beach side casual . Entertainment is on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings as well as during the day on Saturday and Sunday. Waldo's is the #2 seller of Malibu Rum in Florida next to Universal Studios.

(Continued from previous page) Chimps and The Thomas Warren Memorial Scholarship Fund at at Charter High School to mention just a few. I think that you can always tell when a restaurant is really on board with taking care of their customers. The servers are enthusiastic, happy and have been there for years. The little things such as pickles, sauces and fries are top notch Waldo's gets top marks here too. We couldn't leave without having dessert and we were looking for an excuse to linger poolside and gaze out at the ocean. It was a tossup between the homemade Key Lime Pie and the Charles River Pie. We chose the Charles River Pie. It features coffee and vanilla ice cream blended and served on cookie crust with almonds, chocolate drizzle and masses of whipped cream, We decided that we needed coffee as well
and found out that each pot is made with freshly ground beans. The coffee lovers at the table were in awe. We enjoyed the coffee and pie and there was actually blissful silence around the table.

Indian River County Delegation Secures Key Funding for Our Community By Senator Debbie Mayfield Mayfield.Debbie.Web@FLSenate.Gov District Office (772) 226-1970 On May 4th the Florida Senate and House reached an agreement on the 2019-2020 budget for our state and officially ended the 2019 Legislative Session. Together Representative Grall and I worked together to secure key resources to support the goals of our community. The development of a strong workforce is essential as our area is experiencing a critical demand for high-skilled labor. This session the Legislature passed the Workforce Education bill which will expand opportunities for our students to fill these high-wage career paths. This year the Florida Legislature also invested $35billion in our education system. Increasing funding for the FEFP by $783million, including $364million in flexible funding that school districts can use for teacher pay increases, and $285million to recruit, retain and recognize our state’s best teachers. Overall, our schools will receive a record high $7, 672/student. I had the privilege to serve as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Environment
and General Government this year. Through the environmental budget, the Florida Legislature implemented comprehensive and transformative policy that preserves and protects our water and environment. The 2019-2020 budget allocated $686 million for water quality restoration, including $367million for Everglades Restoration; $149 million for water quality improvements like septic-to-sewer and wastewater improvement programs; and $50 million for beach restoration. Additionally, the Florida Legislature unanimously passed my Coastal Management bill to improve the beach restoration process. Protection of the Indian River Lagoon is a top priority. I am proud that we were able to secure additional funding to support local projects like the North Sebastian Septic-to-Sewer Conversion for 150 residents and the North Relief Canal Aquatic Plant Project. I consider it a great honor to represent all of the residents of District 17 and look forward to continuing to work with citizens and businesses to meet the goals of our community.

Youth Sailing Foundation Opens 2019 Summer Sailing On June 3, nineteen sailors ages 8-12 reported to opening day of Youth Sailing Foundation’s 2019 Summer Sailing Camp. There was excitement in the air as the boys and girls gathered in the boathouse at Quail Valley River Club to begin five days of sailing instruction and fun on the water. In its ninth year, YSF’s camp program has grown in popularity and now hosts over 150 children throughout the summer. Eight 1-week sessions
are held in June and July at Quail Valley and at The Moorings Yacht and Country Club, taking advantage of their prime waterfront locations and kid-friendly amenities. Camp sponsors Fidelity Investments and New Vision Eye Center provide a camp T-shirt for each child. YSF creates a virtual marina at each resort, using sections of its floating dock system, and provides an entire fleet of sailboats, ranging in size from 8- to 19-feet, along with several power boats, which ride along for supervision and safety. The camp is staffed by certified sailing instructors and experienced volunteers, most of whom started at YSF as beginners and now sail during the school year on its Opti
and 420 racing teams. While these teen staffers gain work experience or earn volunteer hours, they are also giving back to the YSF sailing program that has been such an important part of their young lives. A 1:2 instructor-to-student ratio provides each camper with quality instruction. Many are able to skipper their own boat solo by the end of the week. Besides sailing, the children get to enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking, and swimming in the resort pool. Need-based financial aid, funded by grants from Quail Valley Charities and Sunrise Rotary Vero Beach and totaling over $11,000, has been awarded to cover full or partial fees for more than 40 local
children. About 25% of the campers are from out-of-town, enjoying sailing camp while vacationing with family at the beach or visiting resident grandparents. YSF camp brings together kids with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and by learning, sailing and playing together they often form friendships that endure for years. Youth Sailing Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit which offers a variety of programs, many free of charge, as a means to engage local children who would otherwise have no opportunity to experience the enjoyment and challenge of sailing. To learn more, volunteer, or make a donation, please call 772-492-3243 or visit www.ysfirc.org.

Fashion show shines spotlight on mental health The New Horizons annual fashion show drew a record crowd this year, with more than 200 guests supporting mental health services while getting a special preview of original apparel by four local designers. The daywear, swimwear and evening gown collections were showcased by 25 fabulous female models in recognition of May being National Mental Health Awareness Month. Presented by Mixon Properties, and emceed by attorney Bobby Guttridge, the event also featured the Indian River High School Jazz Quartet; vocalist Dana Ashton, and speaker Veronica Kolibab, a successful businesswoman who had to rebuild her life at age 14 after her father’s suicide. “This year’s show far exceeded our projections, thanks to a dedicated corps of volunteers,” said CEO George Shopland. “New Horizons should not be the area’s best kept secret. We help so many people. The community needs to know.” New Horizons serves 14,000 children and adults annually, regardless of their ability to pay. More than half of the clients have no source of income or insurance. Established in 1958, the nonprofit operates nine facilities across four counties, with two offices in Vero Beach.

The four fashion designers at this year’s show represent the inpatient and outpatient service region of New Horizons. Sabre Mochachino of Mochachino LA/NY is now a Fort Pierce-based design house; Vivre Couture is the creation of Kristen Alyce, a resident of Jensen Beach; Mary Thornton of Starwear US has been designing and manufacturing swimwear from her studio in Vero Beach for about two decades; and Annalise Bean is a
17-year-old homeschooled student from Okeechobee. The models appearing on this year’s runway were committed to the cause of reducing the stigma of mental illness and increasing access to services. These were the stars of the show: Sheri Altic, Samantha Bucci, Paula Bushell, Edie Collins, MaryGrace Coppola, Christina Culverhouse, Lewana Dupree, Kristin Fleisher, Kylie Gilbert, Marianna Greer, Laura Guttridge, Dana Hagood, Rochelle Boudreau Haisley, Anna Hall, Rebekah Hall, Christine Hughes, Yvette Jones, Jerrica Knowles, Diamond Litty, Bonnie Mixon, Kimberly Nardone, Danielle Negherbon, Rebekah Parsons, Qayani Pryor, Nadja Ricci, Lauralie Sammons, Lisa Sarbak, Talya Shephard, Jen Timothy, and Savannah Woodward. At 3.5 pounds, LifeBike® folds flat & goes anywhere with you in its bag. NEAT Certified by Mayo Clinic, LifeBike® easily, affordably & conveniently burns 300 calories every 30-minutes! LifeBiking lifts your mood, (elevates endorphins), boosts brainpower (increases blood flow to your brain) and energizes you anywhere you sit - at work, at home, even helps prevent blood clots on long flights! LifeBikers include the L.A. Rams, who credit LifeBike® with giving them a competitive edge!

The Pirate Lego Ship By Joe Pellegrino
I have learned a lot of valuable lessons in my life, some of the best came the hard way. But one of best lessons I’ve learned is Being Right is not always RIGHT! Let me explain. As a kid the only thing I ever really excelled at was baseball. Baseball taught me about competition and to be part of a team. It taught me math by calculating the averages of my favorite players and when I had a son it taught me what it meant to really win at what matters most. From the day my son Joey was born I couldn’t wait to get him in the backyard and teach him the game I loved. From when he was very young I would take him in the backyard and have a catch with him. Now my sons gifts are numerous, but just not in the area of baseball. But I wasn't going to quit. One time, when he was around 6, I took him in the backyard to play some ball. This time I decided to up the ante and make a deal with him. The deal was that if he hit the ball over my head, I would buy him the big Pirate Lego ship that he really wanted. It was beautiful… and expensive! But I really
wanted him to be motivated so he would hit it over my head. Unfortunately, he never did…Or did he? For years my son swore he hit that ball over my head. I disagreed. Regardless, it obviously bothered him because he thought that I reneged on the deal. When Joey was 24 years old he took a job in the Florida. So in November 2013 we drove from New Jersey to Jacksonville, Florida, in record time as I remember. During our time in the car we had several conversations, most good. But there were a few that told me that there existed some tension between us. Once we arrived we needed to get him settled in his new apartment so our first stop was the local Walmart. As we shopped for cleaning supplies and various other odds & ends, I happened to pass through the Lego aisle. As I stood in front of the new version of the Pirate Lego ship I felt the tugging of the Holy Spirit and realized that it very well may be that Lego ship was creating a wedge between me and my first born son. I decided that it was time I did something about it. I flew home and the very next day my first stop was Walmart. I purchased that Pirate Ship, wrapped it, wrote out a card and waited for Christmas. So when he came home for Christmas I couldn’t wait to give him this special gift. After all the gifts were given out, I told Joey I had one more for him but before he opened it he needed to first
read the card I had written for him. It said simply: Joey, This is long overdue, and for that I am sorry. Please accept this, late as it may be, for the continual home runs you are hitting in your life. - Love Dad The look on his face told the story. After reading the note he said he knew exactly what the gift was. That day we spent Christmas at my brother in law Timmy’s house. Timmy asked Joey what he got for Christmas. Joey put his arm around me and told Timmy that “my dad never has to buy me another gift”. That meant the world to me! Now I truly believe that he never hit a ball over my head! But what mattered
was that my son believed he did. I felt I was right but more importantly, so did he, and it was causing some friction between us. Therefore, his right trumped mine! Listen, no matter how bad you screw up, no matter how many years have passed, you can always do something about your mistakes. Even if the person you go back to fails to forgive you, you will be released. I am so thankful that I righted a right, and I believe that Joey and I are better for it! It’s never too late! So, is there a right the right moment in your life that needs to be addressed? Remember right is not always right! ________________________________ Joe Pellegrino is an author, speaker, John Maxwell Certified Coach and president of Legacy Minded Men. Joe@legacymindedmen.org
