left: Before screen shot progress right: Final screenshot of homepage with 3 minute intro video and text to introduce concept about bucket list

Derived from someone’s portfolio site where the right side was scrollable and the left was fixed. Tried many times to do that and it works if my list goes above 25!

left: When building icon for “places is clicked right: When one clicks on one of the bucket lists thinks I did during my stay. They disappeared once visited to go with only visitng it once. I rarely experienced it twice.

Took many different versions until I reached this simple one. I wanted the photograph to tell the story and there be links within the text to external videos instead of the videos being seperated.

trimodestudios I met trimode studios in Thailand. A possible internship? They helped me realize how prevelant furniture design was. They are a top design studio too! They helped me find the best places for resources and also told me how growing the industry was.

more organized Above: 2nd Draft of paper

It has been at least 2 years since i have written an analyiical paper on anything! Usually it is research paper and usually on studies of people. This was a different field and I was able to do a lot of research to learn more especially since I had the resources needed in Thailand to speak to. The 2nd paper was much much better. After reading the 1st draft, it seemed like the lack of sleep made my paper look like a middle school child had written it. I tried to think about my experience more for the 2nd paper. I’ve always been interested in creative writing as I didn’t get to take an English class this semester. I guess my creative writing part came out for the intro in the 2nd paper. The Writing Center was very helpful in helping me figure out better transitions and defining some wording that people who were non-designers could understand. Not many things needed to be corrected, according to the paper.

Her exact words were,”Wow! I learned something new today!”

HABIT

GOAL: DO A PROJECT FOR AN AUDIENCE GROUP AT UT BASED OFF OF ONE OF THE CHAPTERS IN TWAYLA THARPE’S CREATIVE HABIT BOOK

TEAM VOLS I was having deciding on the group of people. I’ve always been into minority groups and non-profit organizations because a lot of them lack the design medium to get them noticed. I was doing a Daily Beacon assignment at a fair at the UC when I met my friend Courtney from TeamVols. I told her my dilemma about finding a major or group to do it on and she jokingly said, “Do it on us!!” So, I picked them and asked her on the spot the questions I needed to address the issues. They had trouble coming up with ideas and also design mediums to get themselves noticed. She told me about the meetings too and during my presentation, I found out Lauren, from my design class, was president of Teamvols.

- WHO ARE THEY?

A UT volunteer organization full of students who want to pursue volunteer opportunities around the local Knoxville community They deal with EVERYTHING!

- WHAT ASSUMPTIONS?

Assuming they were not welcoming to other students, maybe some of them had to do it just because of a sorority/frat

Because most students don’t know who they are and some of them dont know each other. They could use their creative skills and this b to use outside of the UT campus. Since they volunteer locally and i act with all kinds of ages and people.

- HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT THEM?

By volunteering with them, interacting with their leadership board

- HOW WILL I FIND OUT?

The demographics, who are these people and why do they do this?

- WHAT DO I NEED TO FIND OUT?

Assuming they were not welcoming to other students, maybe som them had to do it just because of a sorority/frat

- WHAT ASSUMPTIONS?

They deal with EVERYTHING!

A UT volunteer organization full of students who want to pursue vo teer opportunities around the local Knoxville community

- WHO ARE THEY?

TEAM VOLS

I was very stuck on the medium to use. I know I wanted to do somethiing to help them think and come up with things. So I went to go interview them at a group interview. A little awkward and all, but it was helpful. I just asked why they liked volunteering and asked what they current come up with to engage people and to come up with ideas. At the beginning of the meeting, I noticed the ice breaker. The game was whenever the person leading the game said stop! then you would have to look at someone. If the person who you were looking at, looked at you, then you were both out. I ended up the last person!

somehow. I won. so it meant I should do something with ice breakers.

The Creative Habit

hapter 1 - I Walk into a White Room

n introduction to the moments of before a creativity session and trying fill in the blank spaces during. Being creative contains patterns and utines no matter what career job. Famous composers like Mozarts en to practice to compose some of the greatest works. and were not rn with being skills. Another example is Mr. Miyagi and Daniel in The arate Kid. With habit and practice, he was about to retain the informan and use it.

hapter 2 - Rituals of Preparation

tuals are daily patterns in one’s behavior. Twylas’s ritual includes startg the day with a workout and she discusses other artists and people she ows and how they start their ritual like a writer writeing only outside ahletes warming up, cooling down ritual. There is a sacrifice one has go through to clear the mental time conquer the fears and distractions.

hapter 3 - Your Creative DNA

eryone is hard wired differently with a creative code. There are a lot personality involved with identity telling you what best situtation or ak point is. Our impulses and personality change but how we feel out the subject is encoded into us by what comes naturally.

hapter 4 - Harness Your Memory

emory is related to creativity because we can memorize steps through eative process. Muscle memory recreates what you have been through fore for simplicity. Virtual memory can help visualize an end result. nsual memory is remembering a sense of taste, smell, sound. Instituial memory is revisiting old ideas. Ancient memory is tapping into your cestry past.

“But there’s a process that generates creativity— and you can learn it. And you can make it habitual”

“Substracting your dependence on some of the things you take for granted increases your independence.”

“I didn’t feel it in my bones.”

“If there’s a lesson here its: Get busy copying.”

Scratchin

Scratchin

1ST DRAFT I went to Nostaglia and bought a VOLOPOLY game that reminded me of the old games using illsutrated symbols and all because even thought we are adults, we love nostaglic items. So I tried to represent it that way, but it didn’t work out during crit.

2. Put them in the different boxes, shake them up like a shake weight

A good idea is one that turns you on rather than shuts you off. It keeps generating more ideas and they improve on one another. A bad idea closes doors instead of opening them.

8. Be open, solve the challenge, think of strange ideas to get your juices flowing 9. Repeat

Challeng Yourself! Come up with your own problem solving challenges and add it to the kit! Scratching can look like borrowing or appropriating, but it’s an essential part of creativity!

MADE 3D PROJECT People responded well to Stacys, so I guess I just scanned it. I really struggled with this one because of trying to wrap my head about designing for college student and trying to make the game even work. I thinkt rying to find a color palette suited would fix me to the right direction. I wanted to make it energic and full of energy. I had the hardest time trying to find games that weren’t board games.

INVISIBLE VISIBLE

E

GOAL: MAKE SOMETHING INVISIBLE, VISIBLE. ANYTHING INVISIBLE THAT CAN TRANSLATE TO A TANGIBLE OBJECT.

MY LAME FIRST IDEA My first idea included doing something with UV inks. Invisible ink. I had this idea in my head to do something with inks or to do an installation. I figured an installation would’ve had more impact than something small scaled. It never went anywhere because I think I was trying to make it more complicated and involve more work.

I DUNNO WHAT GROUP! I originally didn’t want to narrow down my focus. I knew the form, but not the group. So I left it open at first....until I got this facebook message. THERE’S A MOSQUE IN THE FORT???

NOW THAT I GOT MY AUDIENCE... Now to do research as to what has been done with this audience. The muslim community has been targeted a lot. Politicans and their comments about terrorits have been making people more fearful about this group. More feaful and more ignorant. So I wanted to break their myths down.

interviews

THE WEE STORE OWNER Faithi owns the store called Wee by Disc Exchange. He knows a lot about the religion and we just discussed Islam and the meanings behind the words. He helped me come up with the idea of having a vocab list and doing something with calligraphy

Nourah

NOURAH! A GRAD DESIGN We discussed a lot of things and also random topics, like tea! We talked about typogrphy and also the culture. It was awesome!

PROCESS VIDEO We also had to make a process video for this project. During the process, I filmed a lot of my interviews and a lot of my experience of going to the Mosque, in the Fort Sanders area, as well as the making of this. I did many hours of this because my form and my flashcard design itself changed so many times. As a Daily Beacon photographer, i remembered taking photos of the Muslim Fast last year! I also remembered that I take photos of this one person at random activities around campus. I found her name, and emailed her. She told me to go to the Mosque on Friday. She also has the best parents ever. I interviewed both of them.

2ND IDEA The second had to deal with flash cards. Seemed much better than my first. Seemed more reasonable. What I had to do was do some research on Flashcards.

IS THIS TRUE OR FALSE?

1ST COMP OF FLASHCARDS My horrific generic flashcards taken from the ideas of the research done at the bookstore of them using simple color and white backgrounds.

all muslim women must wear a headscarf

Yeah.... bad WHAT DO YOU THINK?

culture

False Islam does really say how to dress. Only that you should guard your modesty. Around 43% wear the headscarf in the United States and the other 43% choose not to wear a headscarf, or hijab.

Burqa

Hijab

Chador

Niqab

Hani Khan, a college sophomore had worked for three months as a stockroom clerk at a Hollister Co. clothing store in San Francisco. when she was told the head scarf she wears in observance of Islam violated the company's "look policy." When supervisors told Khan she had to remove the scarf, known as a hijab, to work at the store, she refused on religious grounds. A week later, she was fired.

vocab

meaning: The literal meaning of Jihad is struggle or effort, not the “holy war” meaning Western media uses

scenario

There are 3 didfferent kinds of Jihad: A believer's internal struggle to live out the Muslim faith well The struggle to build a good Muslim society The struggle to defend Islam

SHOULD THE STORE HAVE FIRED HER FOR HER HEADSCARF? A — YES, they had the right to because she was violating the store policy B — MAYBE, they may have fired her for a difference reason C — NO, she is allowed to wear her hijab and the store shouldn’t discriminate!

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-04-14-headscarves-muslim_N.htm

2ND COMP OF FLASHCARDS During crit, an idea was to think about shape, form. I went through and rememebered how Nourah told me about the Yin and Yang. How we as Westerners even misinterept what the meaning is. So thus came to be this yin and yang form of two categories. I personally have liked flashcards on a keychain, so I added it to it as a way to keep it together, but it became more personal and unshareable.

MORE RESEARCH NEEDED! Nourah let me borrow one of her headscarves. If people knew me or saw me around the art building, I got no feedback. No negative or anything. Just positive and “AWESOME! Anyway, so I had to go outside of campus...which I didnt really leave campus. I went home for thanksgiving and found out how unwelcoming my dad was to the idea of my project. I did however find out how warm it was to wear one in the winter months and how annoying it was to keep it on my head. Also, it kept getting in the way of me helping my friends make some paper. After my research, I looked at arabic design. The use of the calligraphy forms to create space and unity of the information

trial

and error

laser + cut

FINAL the VOCAB section was taken from the arabic design. Taking the calligraphy parts and forming them to create a layout. I tried my par to stretch it out in the 4 column grid. As i was doing research, I came across the use of gold and black in a lot of mosques and the garments.. I added the pattens on the back so it would have more constrast and more culture to it.

FINAL The TRUE and FALSE has the cresent and star symbols frequently used in islam design. I wanted the front designs to be black and white. The color on the back would bring some light.

FINAL the SCENARIOS are true stories I came across. The mosque in Murfreesboro, is outside my neighborhood. My dad and I discuss this all the time, so I put it in there. I used the square to symbolize Mecca
