I.
Summarize As you reflect on this lesson, what are some strategies that worked? What are some things that captured your attention? The characterization table with the Cinderella comparison definitely worked. The Mme. Loisel drawing defining dynamic characterization also worked extremely well.
II.
Analyze What did you notice about your student(s) during the lesson? What were the challenges for students? The students were very engaged. They especially liked being able to compare the story of “Cinderella” to “The Necklace”. They loved the Mme. Loisel character creation using the peer-outline. The students were challenged by the characterization table. They found the idea of external and internal conflict difficult but understood after it was explained more fully.
III.
Construct new learning What are some of the things you are taking away from this experience that will influence your practice in the future? What are some of things you are learning about your teaching and your students?
February 2008
I was very impressed with the students’ reactions to using “Cinderella”. Using a more common and well-known story to emphasize characterization demystified the concept and made a potentially “dry” lesson fun. I would now always try to use a simplified or real-life example to explain a more difficult or abstract concept.
IV.
Commit to application What are your next steps when you prepare for and teach your future lessons? What are you thinking now?
This lesson worked very well. It is almost a model lesson to aspire to. I would like to always remain creative when planning my lessons and would also like to incorporate examples that are modern, informative and useful to the students, alongside the literary texts being studied. I always want to find ways to capture and keep student attention. V.
Reflect on Coaching Process How did this session help to clarify your thinking?
This session showed me that my lesson plans were successful but that I have areas which require improvement. Mrs. Jackson’s comments confirmed that my ideas worked well and were appropriate for the class. Mrs. Jackson also confirmed that my class and behavior management techniques are improving and clarified the Quantum Learning technique of class work, group work and individual work.
