Costume Pieces We Need for Footloose (Musical)

Page 1

Costume Pieces we need for Footloose I am madly hitting both storage and the local thrift stores to find stuff for this honking great big cast, but realistically we can’t beat that much current fashion out of either the Trap Room or Goodwill without things getting too expensive. However, you each have (2018) modern clothes in your closet, so, if you have any of the following items, this is what we hope to compile for you to wear: 1.1.a Chicago Dance Club with Ren McCormick and Teen Ensemble as Chicago Clubbers & Rusty, Urleen, and Wendy Jo (AKA “Trio”) as same. (Alyssa, Alexis, Melissa, Angelo, Maya, Kamaria, Jon, Tommy, Connor, Mackenzie, Ronald, & Myles) The General Theme is Eclectic Black Clubwear with pops of neon color and/or sparkle:

However, Ren needs to have something funky/retro with a tie, so he can go from Club to Church without looking like Disco Dan at church. In all his other scenes he needs something eclectic, odd and cool, but with color, especially colorful and interesting shoes.

Rusty, Urleen & Wendy Jo will need easy quick-change stuff in order to be correctly attired for 1.1.b & 1.2. The remaining 8 will have Choir robes that can effectively cover their outfits for 1.1.b. This scene is then split between Ren & Ethel McCormick Packing at McCormick Home. Ren Stays in the same outfit. Ethel needs to wear a conservative dress suitable for the Church later, but in Black, or Black and white, not pastels, however, in the packing scene she also needs one of those comfy if ugly coat sweaters that you wear at home when you feel sick, cold or in a bad mood, which will hide her dress somewhat, and convey the mood. At this point there

will also be a simultaneous Quick Change of the trio Rusty, Urleen, & Wendy Jo into their 1.1.b church outfits.) 1.1.b Church in Bomont: Rev Shaw Moore, Choir, Parishioners, Ethyl, Vi Moore, Ariel Moore, Ren. Ren and Ethyl will be similarly dressed as before, but Ethyl will lose the sweater, and be revealed in a somber but stylish dress or suit, NOT in a pastel range. Rev. Moore will have a Grey suit, black tie and sweater vest under a purple master’s gown.

The Teen Ensemble will be in Gray/Green (6) or Red/Blue (2) Choir robes over their 1.1.a stuff.

Vi Moore, Ariel and the Female Parishioners need to be in Pastel Suits and Dresses, with the Trio, and Ariel in younger, more modern/casual flashier versions of this look:

Rusty needs to carry on the tradition of Sarah Jessica Parker from the original film, by being a little bit of a fashion “don’t” who tries too hard. I’ve got a bunch of oversized purses for her so far, but I’m open to any suggestions that make her funnier while still being extremely cute.

The Male Adult Parishioners should also be conservatively dressed, but with a light Southern color palette, with polo shirts & chinos:

1.2 Churchyard Same as Above with Eleanor and “Coach” Dunbar, Lulu and Wes Warnicker. Eleanor should be a bit over the top with peach/pink “sweetness” (I’ve found an amazing jacket), while Lulu should look a tiny bit like a “Sister Wife” in a cult, with extra modest dress.

1.3 Behind the Gas Station, Chuck Cranston, Lyle, Travis, Ariel in sexed up outfit from 1.2, Rev Shaw Moore with Sweater for Ariel. Ariel’s outfits always need a jacket or sweater, that she can pull off as soon as her parent’s eyes are turned off her, and a sleeveless, or low cut, tank or even Daisy Duke halter at top, however the colors at this point need to be in the same pinky pastels as the other churchgoers rather than these ones:

Chuck, Lyle and Travis need bits of camo, bits of biker stuff, trucker hats (we have those) and rural Western wear, as though they fuse the following into the only cool/interesting boys in town, not despite this stuff, but because wearing it seems rebellious:

1.4 High School Hallway Teen Ensemble, Ariel, Rusty, Ren, Willard Hewitt, Wendy Jo, Urleen, Principal Harry Clark,

Principal looks boring with glasses, tie and school ID tag.

The Teen Ensemble at school needs to dress in ordinary school wear, like jeans, tennis shoes, etc., ideally in faded jeans, plaids, pastels, and neutrals, like they are emotionally

faded somehow. I’m especially keen that they wear NO BRIGHT OR INTERESTING SHOES/SOCKS (except cowboy boots) to start with. We want black, white, brown, blue gray, or tan shoes to contrast with the fun interesting shoes of Ren. It is especially important the boys look boring, conforming, and cowed.

1.4 continued on Town Street Adult ensemble as Townspeople and Cop. Chuck, Lyle & Travis in street clothes Townspeople in less fancy, formal stuff than at church, they also should look dull and faded. Lyle and Travis as before, Cop as shown here. Right after this there is a Quick Change for Lyle & Travis to wearing wrestling outfits in the next bit, so they need to underdress the wrestling outfits: 1.4 continued in Principal’s Office Principal Harry Clark, Coach, Ren, Lyle & Travis, Coach Dunbar should have changed out of his church clothes into something like this in the Blue/Gold school colors:

1.4 continued in Warnicker Home Interior: Ren, Ethyl, Lulu & Wes. Ren as before, Ethyl in restrained but tasteful pants, shirt & sweater. Wes in Walmart Trucker hat, Shirt and blue jeans. Each Walmart store has their own custom designed patches, so if you are good at Photoshop we can make up a Bomont Texas patch or two to add.

Lulu needs a bland, retro wrap-around housedress.

1.4 continued in In Front of Moore Home: Ariel, Chuck with Rusty, Urleen, and Wendy Jo as back up chorus trio. (Same types of things as the school clothes. Ariel and Trio can have slightly more color/interesting school clothes). 1.5 Moore Home Interior: Ariel in same, Shaw and Vi (Trio of Soliloquies “Learning to be Silent with Ariel & Ethyl in clothing from previous scenes, and Vi in nice pants, cardigan, shirt and flats for home.)

1.6 Burger Blast: Ariel in Red Cowboy Boots, Rusty, Urleen, Wendy Jo. Ren & Betty in uniforms, Willard in overalls, Chuck looking like usual.

1.7 Bomont Plains: Ariel and Ren as in 1.6 with Chuck spying on them. Rusty, Wendy Jo and Urleen as trio. 1.8 Moore Home Interior/Exterior: Eleanor, “Coach”, Vi, Principal Clark, Shaw. Ren and Ariel as before. Trio as before. Chuck, Lyle &

Travis in “Rumble” gear for a fight with ski masks.

1.9 High School Gym/Church: In Gym Clothes: Ren (with bandages), Ariel, Willard, “Coach”, Teen Ensemble, Trio. In Church clothes or choir robes: Adult ensemble, Shaw, other adult characters?

We need any plain blue/gold sports stuff that does not have big nonBomont logos for the Gym. White is ok too. Yellow, white, blue or black sneakers are OK. 2.1 Bar-B-Que Dance Hall: Ariel, Ren, Rusty, Willard, Cowboy Bob, Band, Teen and Adult Ensemble in Western Wear. We need cowboy boots (especially for the guys), plaid and/or Western shirts, jeans, Daisy Duke cutoff shorts, jeans skirts, ruffled Western shirts, a leather “Coyote Ugly” waitress outfit, etc.

Cowboy Bob’s outfit will have fake snakeskin pants and green and gold sequins added to this jacket to match this twinkly hat. For Rusty we have a jacket with big embroidered flowers like this, as well as western purse. Our ensemble needs more stuff like this, as we only have some of it, so ask mom and dad if they got stuff like this in the 1980s and never threw it out‌

2.2 Moore Home: Vi and possibly Shaw in house robes, Chuck, Ariel as in 2.1.

2.3 The Junk Yard: Ren, Willard, Bickle, Jeeter, and Garvin in painting clothes. Travis joins group. Boys have acquired bright cool shoes. Ariel with black eye, Girl Posse Trio, in brighter colors.

2.4 Town Hall: Entire Company, teens wearing brighter clothes, especially shoes, Adults still in pastels and bland neutrals. 2.5 The Moore Home: Ren as before, Shaw in Bathrobe. Ariel in night clothes. 2.6.a Church: Full Ensemble very similar to 1.1, but with teens in brighter clothes from town hall scene. 2.6.b Churchyard: Same, followed by a (Quick Change into Prom stuff!) 2.7 Gym Decorated for Prom: Willard in funky looking brown suit, matching Rusty’s stuff somehow. Teen ensemble and teen principals in motley prom wear. Fancy Western stuff on guys can be mixed in. ALL need fun shoes with color, style or twinkle, and individuality. Girls in long dresses with BRIGHT colors, boys in begged and borrowed promwear. Adults as chaperones? Or do they come in for final number in church costumes as a singing dancing curtain call?
