The Board of Directors is proud of the entire Bristol Hospital family - its employees, physicians, and volunteers - on its relentless commitment to patient satisfaction. \With our culture firmly rooted in patient satisfaction, the staff has achieved a level of professionalism and compassion that is a model for healthcare facilities nationwide. This commitment ro patients and the communiry is what sets us apart and makes us special.
Our partnership with Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center continues to mature. One of our strategies for our affiliation was to bring the strong reputation of their Centers for Excellence to our communiry. We recently announced the arrival of the third program, the Hoffman Heart Institute with Bristol Hospitalt cardiac services. Enhancing our cardiac services, as was done with our cancer and diabetes programs, was one of our clinical goals with Saint Francis. \(/e would like to extend our thanks to the cardiologists and other clinical areas for their hard work and support as we worked on reaching this milestone. As we move Forward into the new millennium, we promise to stay focused on our core mission
to deliver the highest qualiry healthcare, while changing to assure that the best health care is available here in our communiry for all who may need it.
For over a decade, our commitment to improve patient satisfaction has been outstanding. Ve continue to rank in the top 3olo in patient satisfaction
in hospitals nationwide

direct result of men and women devoting their
lives to caring for our patients and their families. Our employees, physicians and volunteers
inspiration on a professional and emotional scale that is rarely equaled. Those of us who see them in action are forever altercd by the example they set. Their dedication was never more apparent than with our Bristol Communiry Breast Health Project, which received the New England Sociery of Healthcare Communication's Annual Lamplighter Award for excellence in a communiry outreach program. To everyone who has touched or been are an
touched by this Project, thank you for our moment of honor. 'We
continue to see an upward trend in patient volume growth. Our inpatient market share grew 6y 2Vz points, the largest percentage growth that weve experienced in over a decade. In just three yeart time we have made up the entire market share decline that occurred during the previous years. This also has resulted in a solid financial
performance above our expectations.
This is a remarkable time of challenge and change for Bristol Hospital. In late spring 2001, we will break ground on the new PeriOperative Project, one of our most ambitious construction projects in years. Building on a tradition of care in which we take great pride, we are constantly searching for better ways of providing services to care for those who need us. Our Circle of Success best demonstrates our belief that excellence in patient satisfaction tVe will continue to build creares patient/community preference, which creates volume and financial benefit. on our strengths, to become better for our patients, better for our community, better for you and your family.

In late October, we announced the affiliation of Saint Francis Hospital's Hoffman Heart Institute of Connecticut with the Hospitalt cardiology services to form The Hoffrnan Heart Institute at Bristol Hospital. \Torking with our affiliate cardiologists, we have incorporated the latest research findings and clinical guidelines, putting into place quality tools and new guidelines based upon the collecdve expertise
of Hoffrnan Heart and over 60 cardiologists.

The Saint Francis Care Cenrer for Diabetes at the Bristol Hospital \Wellness Center received the prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate for its individual and group education programs. awards this certificate only to programs that have
ADA
demonstrated the highest qualiry diabetes patient education.
The past year was one of advancement in the quality of health care in Bristol. Through our relationship with Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, we recently announced the affiliation of The Hoffman Heart lnstitute of Connecticut with Bristol Hospital's cardiology services. Our Saint Francis Core Center for Diabetes was also recognized this year when they received the prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate. These programs have allowed us to bring to Bristol the clinical collaboration that a Iarge program offers.
The medical staff is always concerned about quality issues as we strive to provide excellence in patient care. We have been working hard to address pain management standards, and oncologist Debrorah Sculco, MD is currently heading a task force to address how we assess and treat pain, and how we communicate with patients in response to their needs. We are also looking at our controls and have formed a task force to address our policies on medication administration, based on the lnstitute of Medicine report that was published and the media
attention surrounding this issue. We are involved in a number of external monitoring programs including the Connecticut Hospital Association's obstetrical indicators program and the National Registry of Acute Myocardial lnfarctions. The collection and registry of NRMI-4 data will serve as a key benchmark for ongoing quality monitoring for the management of acute myocardial infarctions. We also participated in a number of national research studies including Qualidigm's Community Acquired Pneumonia study through our Emergency Department and the University of Wisconsin's pain management study.
Our highly talented and dedicated medical staff has expanded this past year with the addition of nine new physicians. We must also recognize the significant contributions of two of our distinguished physicians who retired this past year, Rudolph Bee, MD and David L. Wasley, MD. I would also lil<e to acknowledge the reelection of Wendy Latshaw, MD as Assistant Chief of Staff and iohn Walkel MD as Medical Representative. I am grateful for their leadership, dedication and friendship. Daniel i. Scoppetta, MD

"Colorectal cancer is the number two cancer killer in the United States and it strikes just as hard in women as it does in men. Yet it is one of the most highly preventable and curable types of cancer when detected early." Daniel Smiley, MD Project Co-choir; Bristol Costroenterology Associates, PC.
future
The year 2001 marks the launch of the Bristol Hospital PeriOperative Project. The increased growth in market share and the demand
that our highly talented group of
physicians has created has prompted us to undertake an expansion and modernization of the current surgical complex on our campus. Later this Spring we will break ground on the Bristol Hospital PeriOperative Project with
T
the intention of being operational around the end of 2002.The PeriOperative Project will combine all of the inpatient and outpatient surgical areas, as well as the endoscopy department, in one building.
\7e are initiating the Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Awareness Project in 2001 to educate people about the risk factors, signs and symptoms, prevention measures and detection techniques that could save the lives of people in the greater Bristol community. We're confident that our
community will support this Project as it did the Breast Health Project. Our annual report can never be just a report on the business and financial aspects of health care. It is important to remember that there are people in our area who do not have or cannot afford health care or health insurance. As our community's hospital, Bristol Hospital does not forget these patier.rts; their needs are known. This will remain a commitment that is at the heart and soul of our being. During 2000 we provided $4.5 million in uncompensated free care to the communiry. We are relentless in our promise to those we serve, and we are proud of it.

The Bristol Radiology Center continues to serve as a state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging facility dedicated to meeting the ever-changing needs of the greater Bristol community. tWith the addition of an open MRI system, a new PET scanner and various innovative and cuttingedge procedures and techniques performed by the resident radiologists, the Bristol Radiology Center is at the forefront
in diagnostic medicine. In early 2001, Bristol Hospital and Central Connecticut Medical Group will open a new medical office in Terryville housing primary care physician offices, X-ray facilities and a blood drawing station. The center
will offer extended
hours to accommodate walk-in appointments for X-rays and blood work. I

The Bristol Hospital's Auxiliary's first year in the new millennium was eventful and successful, thanks to our supportive Board of Directors and our hospital family. Our major fundraiset the Annual Ball, enabled us to fulfill our goal of$100,000 for the echocardiography machine, as well as replace three pieces of equipment in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit.
