Hello PHHS Key Clubbers!

33

Spring is in the air, and with it, tons of service experiences! This month, in the midst of AP and PARCC testing, busy academics, and other generally hectic PHHS happenings, Key Clubbers still managed to do a great deal. We participated with other divisions in the March for Babies, worked on CSH cards, prepared candy bags for our teachers, and contributed to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Find out more about this month’s accomplishments inside, and don’t forget to check out the upcoming service opportunities under the reminders on the last page! Yours in Caring and Service, Tara Srinivasan and Shreya Nair

Introducing the President Hello Key Clubbers! It is my honor to introduce myself as your 2016-2017 Key Club President! While I will surely miss our old Exec. Board, I am extremely excited to see the new things our club will accomplish in the new service year. I wish to spread my passion of service to those around me and to encourage all of you to do the same. My Key Club journey has been an amazing experience thus far and I am positive that this next year will bring many more memories. There is never a day where I don’t fall in love with Key Club all over again and I can’t wait to share these experiences with all of you! Stay tuned for more updates, and get ready to experience the many joys of service! Yours in Caring and Service, Asha Patel

Introducing the LTG Hello Division 20! I am truly honored to serve as your 2016-2017 Lieutenant Governor for Division 20. I joined Key Club as a freshman not because I wanted to change the world, nor because I wanted to join the largest service organization in the world, but simply because it was something that my sister had done. Three years later, I have truly and personally understood the power of Key Club. I have learned that service does not just have to involve elaborate service projects or fundraising hundreds of dollars for the district project: contributing to your community can be something as little as making someone smile in a local parade. My most important priority is to communicate with all clubs and members. Please do not hesitate to contact me through any means if you have any questions or concerns, and keep me updated with your upcoming events and goals! I hope that we can make a difference together. Yours in Caring and Service, Vanessa Ting

Divisional Event Each year, about 380,000 babies are

born prematurely in the United States. Although it is the number one killer of infants, much about what causes prematurity in about half of the cases is still unknown. All over the world, research into its causes as a step toward preventing it is being funded by March of Dimes, of which Key Club International is a proud supporter. To help in the fight against prematurity, Divisions 19, 20, and 21 banded together at a March for Babies at Fairleigh Dickinson University on Sunday, May 1st. Despite the rain and upcoming AP exams, we managed to raise a grand total of $464.35! Thank you to all the Key Clubbers from the three divisions who participated in the walk and donated!

Spring CSH Cards CSH cards are one of the easiest and innovative seasonal service projects that Key

Clubbers can participate in! Key Club members create handmade cards using their creative art skills to fit a seasonal theme, which are then sent to the Children’s Specialized Hospital. This month, several members participated to create several colorful and thoughtful cards to fit the theme of spring. CSH cards are a nice way to cheer the children up and to remind them that Key Clubbers are thinking of them, especially at a time where they may not be able to see all their own loved ones. This project provides members with the chance to give back to members of their own community in a time where they may need it. Thank you to all the members who participated!

Teacher Appreciation In the past few weeks leading up to May 3rd, Key

Clubbers brought in bags of candy for our annual Teacher Appreciation candy bag filling. To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week and give back to the people who keep our school running, we filled bags with treats and a special message, and then distributed them into the teacher mailboxes. One of the favorite yearly Key Club events, the Teacher Appreciation candy bag filling is a simple way to put a smile on the face of each faculty member. We hope the teachers enjoyed, and we thank everyone who donated candy and stayed back after school to fill the bags! May 2016

What’s KCI Up To?

District Project The 2016-2017 New Jersey District Key Club

service year marks a second year of supporting the New Jersey Federation of Food Banks. In this state alone, 1.1 million people don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and 1 in 8 residents rely on food banks. To meet their needs, the Federation works to provide them with food through 5 food banks across the state, and once again, us Key Clubbers want to help out! This year, we as a district aim to collect 56,000 pounds of food, as well as $60,000 in donations. Stay tuned for upcoming ways to contribute to the District Project!

Stamp Out Hunger On Saturday, May 14th, Americans in over 10,000 cities and

May 2016

towns across the country set out bags of nonperishable food next to their mailboxes to be picked up by letter carriers. It was the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive, the largest one-day drive in the nation. For the past 24 years, carriers have been collecting this food to be distributed to food banks. We hope that you contributed to this food drive to help “stamp out” hunger in New Jersey as an extension of our district project!
