THE STUDENT RESIDENCE A community center linked to a residence - Meudon, France

The project has been executed in two phases. First of all, the conception of a residence designated for students. We can see here the different scales, from a student room to the global conception of the 10 floors building.

Settled next to the Seine, in the commune of Meudon, in a multi-generational center, the project of student residence has been one of the first exercises that I had to execute during my architectural studies. Analyzing the neighborhood has been has been the best way to determine together how the project can get insert into the existing urban structure in a smooth way.

The second part of the project was to do the conception of a community center that work as a transition between the residence and the rest of the neighborhood. The multi-generational community center is laying over two levels with transversal views, which helps for developing community life. The external and internal spaces make a bending form under a roof with a common space between the two spaces which create a full and empty spaces.

The Place du Palais Royal in Paris is currently a space of passage, where very few activities take place. The design of a pavilion and the layout of the entire square comes in the idea of boosting this space. axes axe reliant les deux places axe de composition

The aim of the project is to accentuate the diagonal between the Place du Palais Royal and the Place Colette, while directing traffic to the pavilion. The steps on both sides of the center allow to have this duality between spaces of circulation and spaces of relaxation and pause. The two opposite ramps create a relief that can generate different uses of the place such as skateboarding. The pavilion is finally positioned in the center, above which a large staircase leads to a slab to rise and rebalance the scale with the buildings around the square.

J U N E 2 0 1 4 L I C E N C E The project is structured according to a compression-expansion system throughout a loop course around a garden which is at the level of the basement. The patio here becomes an interior courtyard for offices and allows for them to maintain a link with the exterior. The reading space becomes an important element by creating a framing on the perspective of the canal and the buildings which are on the other side of the canal. A system of alcoves also allows to make the facade more interactive and it offers perspective views on a smaller scale of the surrounding landscape.

Surrounded by tall buildings, mostly residential, this school was conceived with the idea of intersections. Intersection of different generations, intersection between classrooms.

The first intersection is celebrated in the public spaces at each entrance : a library, a cafeteria, a sports center. These spaces are aimed to be used by elders who live in the neighbourhood and by children from the elementary school.

The second intersection came from Maternelle the idea of creating new spaces where children from different ages can get together. These spaces are created in the intersection of two adjacent classrooms. Classrooms that are located on the common roof’s corners rise so that their walls made of mud can reflect light in the Sud hallways. The Façade interaction between the blocks and the faceted roof creates interesting shapes made to be seen from under by children and from the top by neighbors. The use of different matérials like metal and glass in the roof and mud in the classrooms is a way Nord to accentuate Façade the main idea of intersections.

THE MUSEUM

In the middle of the Place du Palais Royal in Paris, a nomad museum took place temporarily. It is molded in a strange form, caracterised by its dark color and the million lights that move and change trough the day and night.

Once you get in the main entrance, you pass by a patio big enough to hold a big crowd. Then, you enter the museum as if you’re entering a cave, walking in small groups in uneven imitating the irregularity of a cave’s ground.

The memorable sound of waterdrops and whispering help immerse the visitors in a atmosphere of the prehistorical era. The walls and roof were compoosed of a proliferation of pigmentations fixed on tubes of different, creating an illusion of the accidental walls of a cave. That illusion is intensified by the artworks that appear in the walls with lights that mimic the steps of the painting’s process.

This system is inspired by the prehistoric tales, where they say spirits inhabit the walls and express themselves through the rock’s shapes. They capture the movements made by the shapes and the shadows by painting it, giving it a still position. To achieve that illusion, a complex system has been conceived espacially for the museum, giving the opportunity to mold it to every artwork they want to include in the collection. That way, the paintings come alive and can be displayed in real scale, for the visitors to apprehend the artwork in its reality. Section plan showing an artwork

By the end of the period it’s meant to be in the Place, the nomad museum continues its way in another city, after decomposing it so it can be transported elsewhere.

THE HEXA-HOME Modular houses - Several situations in France

In the collaboration with students from the Ecole SupĂŠrieure du Bois, we had to conceive several propositions for the Minimaousse 6 contest. The project is a low-cost temporary housing module that is meant to be used in several sites and with different combinations. We decided to work on hexagonal-shaped housing modules. One module is a home for one person and it can be added to another module to accommodate a family. This system aims to use small spaces more efficiently.

The flat roofs of one module can become the balcony of others and the spaces under the modules can become terraces or storage shelters according to needs. Its interior spatiality makes it possible to give sensations of bigger space and the walls are used to accommodate the furniture so that the space on the ground can remain free.

To design and make this concept efficient, it was necessary to think of three different scenarios, where the modules would be assembled in different ways. Here, we have three sites of different natures, sizes and orientations where each population has its own needs and habits.

THE TYPHA CENTER - KËR TYPHA A center for transformation and valorisation of typha - Pikine, Senegal

THE NIAYE’S AREA IN THE REGION OF DAKAR

The project takes place in Djiddah Thiaroye Kao, the densest municipality in the densest city in Senegal. Two major issues emerge from the analysis of the region: constant flooding and a proliferation of typha in houses due to water stagnation in what they call «niayes».

Solutions have been undertaken by the inhabitants to rebuild the flooded houses, but the typha remains a problem without solution, given its invasiveness. Now, research is being done on the use of typha in construction, especially in bricks made out of mud and typha, thatch roofs, insulation ... By this practice, typha can become an ally rather than a constraint.

First of all, the wall surrounding the buildings in the center will be removed. Then, the walls and the faceted roof will be built so we can dry the first typha harvests, and transform it into construction materials like bricks made of mud and typha. After a while, the bricks will be used to build the three buildings where the conservation of typha and training will be located. All along, a foot bridge will be constructed so we can access directly to the entire roof. Finally, the inhabitants that need to build again there houses will have the opportunity to do it with local materials made out of typha.

The project will be then executed in several steps. Beginning with the appropriation of the site until the creation of the Typha Center. It will then help the local population rebuild their houses with a cheaper cost and conquer their problem with floods. The main purpose of the center is to communicate on the many abilities of using typha but more precisely on its importance for low-cost construction.

During the dry season, it is possible to cut typha and to execute all the steps of transformation and training under the roof or in the buildings. But during the rainy season, the site is 50% under water and typha can’t be cut. Therefore, only transformation, conservation and training can be done in the center. Empty gas cans will be put all along the buildings so when it’s flooded, the access from outside to the building and the roof can still be available. The buildings, that are built on a high foundation, can also be accessed to by the foot bridges leading to the dry part of the site. 25

This is how, in this place, with the collaboration of the community and the local organisations, typha can be perceived with positivity. It can become a solution to many of their problems so they can adapt better to the floods in that area.

The two volumes face each other, then one of them turns to the south while the terraces create different levels to offer an additional floor. These various levels create vertical, horizontal, aerial and covered circulations. The two generous roofs protect the center. They hold all the equipment allowing to gain a great sufficiency. The water cycle adds value to the structure. The water is stocked, used and then brought to three waste stabilization ponds.


The amphitheater is thought of as continuity of the buildings. It serves not only as a place for gathering but also as a transition and landscaping between the two blocs. The night falls and the big wall overlooking this area turns into a screen for films or a background for all sorts of performances.

We are especially interested in the modular design. One can easily imagine the cultural space transforming eventually into classrooms. Owing to the free plan, the communal hall can equally hold all sorts of events.
