Another highlight of this area is a littoral rainforest walk which encompasses striking coastal landforms as well as rare tracts of coastal rainforest.

Other activities in the Hallidays Point area include an 18 hole championship golf course, a bowling club and nearby, The Big Buzz Fun Park which is ideal for families with three open waterslides, speed karts, swimming pools and many more activities.

Old Bar Beach is the closest surfing beach to Taree and just a 10-minute drive from the Pacific Highway. This location is perfect for fishing, boating and water sports for the whole family.

Old Bar is also home to the Old Bar Beach Festival which is held each year over the October long weekend. Thousands of visitors come to town for the array of festivities over two action-packed days.

Manning Point is both a riverside and seaside location where the sea and the north arm of the Manning River meet at this idyllic point. Over the years the lands of Farquhar Inlet and Manning Point have been the most successful breeding and fledgling sites in the State for the endangered shore bird, the Little Tern.

Relax your days away in this picturesque village by swimming at the beach, launching your boat for a fish or pack a picnic and take in the views.

Ten minutes north of Taree and just off the highway is the tranquil seaside village of Harrington which sits at the northern mouth of the Manning River.

Just north of Harrington, the small fishing village of Crowdy Head retains evidence of its European settlement and history around the area with a strong maritime flavour.

In 1894 a long breakwall was built to protect the entry channel for shipping, which now serves as a scenic walk and great fishing location. The nearby Pilot Hill Lookout provides expansive views over the river delta and the graves on the hill bear witness to the pilots whose task was to guide the boats over the bar.

A must do for all is a visit to the iconic Crowdy Head Lighthouse. The lighthouse perched high on the headland provides 360-degree views of the coast. Between May and August, keep your eye out for passing humpback whales. The lighthouse itself is picturesque and a great place for a photograph as well as being easily accessible on a sealed road.

A taste of holidays from our past, Harrington’s relaxed seaside lifestyle is a welcome escape from today’s frantic pace. Stroll along waterfront pathways where bollards form a visual display of Harrington’s history. Rest in riverside parks or cast a line for that elusive catch of the day. See the resident pelicans rest atop colourfully painted power poles waiting for the fishing boats to return.

There are riverside and seaside caravan parks, cabins, pubs, clubs and cafés with great views so you can watch the hive of activity happening on the river.

Driving north of Crowdy Head you can enter Crowdy Bay National Park. There are two camping spots, Crowdy Gap and Diamond Head. The Park provides spectacular cliff top views, easy walking tracks, abundant wildlife and good fishing. Diamond Head and Indian Head provide unforgettable backdrops to the colourful wildflower displays in spring and summer. Access to the park is via an unsealed road from Crowdy Head or from Moorland 35 kilometres north of Taree.

History and literary buffs should also visit the hut near Diamond Head of celebrated Australian novelist Kylie Tennant, affectionately named ‘Kylie’s Hut’. This retreat in nature was the inspiration for her novel, The Man on the Headland.

The Manning River is quite impressive.

It is the only double delta river system in Australia with two entrances to the ocean, one at Old Bar and the other at Harrington. With more than 150 kilometres of navigable waterways, it is not surprising that the Manning River is a recreational fishing haven, luring fishermen to the region from all over Australia.

By boat you can also discover the riverside towns of Taree, Tinonee, Harrington, Croki and Manning Point. It’s also not uncommon to see dolphins swimming by and splashing in the wake of your boat, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled!

Gabriel Darzi The Sicilian The opening of The Sicilian Italian restaurant in Taree made a huge splash. The Manning Valley now sports a restaurant that has the quality of decor, atmosphere and excellent food you would normally associate with Sydney or Melbourne.

Gabriel’s attention to detail inspires and he is always ready to try something new. A new kerb-side dining space, ‘The Parklet’, on Victoria Street Taree is testament to this.

Gabriel Darzi is not only our local celebrity chef but is also the most personable host. His authentic Southern Italian menu uses the freshest produce. Trust us, you wont leave feeling hungry!

Riverside Taree

Located on the Manning River, Taree is the major commercial centre of the Manning Valley and is a great place to base yourself to explore the region. The local Aboriginal people originally named Taree “Tareebit” after the fruit of the majestic fig trees found growing in the region.

Taree offers a great variety of shopping with modern undercover complexes, arcades, boutique gift and clothing shops, craft centres, antiques and speciality stores. While you’re out and about, be sure to grab a coffee or lunch at one of the many cafés.

Pack a picnic and explore the riverside parks with their shady grassed areas, meandering paths and playgrounds that overlook the flowing water. For some adventure and excitement, grab your kayak, boat or jet ski and get out on the mighty Manning River itself.

The town’s recreational facilities include numerous sporting fields, the Taree Recreation Centre, racecourse, ten pin bowling, Manning Entertainment Centre, Manning Aquatic and Leisure Centre, and rowing and sailing clubs. For a spot of exercise or relaxation, take a plunge in our modern Aquatic Centre with indoor and outdoor swimming or play some golf at one of our five excellent golf courses.

Donna Carrier Bent on Food Bent on Food is the creation of Donna Carrier and has been promoting local produce through its shop, cafe and cooking school since 2004.

The most awarded cafe in the region offers visitors a range of regional experiences including local music nights, gourmet tours and food hampers delivered anywhere in Australia.

Wonderful Wingham

A ten-minute drive west of Taree is the historic town of Wingham.

Settled in 1853 on the banks of the Manning River, Wingham offers visitors the opportunity to step back in time. Its rich heritage is evident in the many National Trust listed Federation buildings which surround the town.

From the second you drive past the Wingham town entry sign you enter the history of the Manning. To the left is Chrissy Gollan Park, originally the site of Chinese market gardens and now an open green space for meeting friends, throwing a ball around, having a picnic or just relaxing under the shade of a tree.

The weekends in Wingham are filled with colourful markets and the chance for you to purchase fresh, locally grown produce, hand crafted gifts, clothes, candles and more!

Each October, splendid sounds mingle with the heritage surroundings as the Wingham Akoostik Festival kicks into action. Music lovers are drawn to town for three days of live entertainment, workshops and quality food and market stalls.

Spend some time at the Historical Museum, which is open 7 days and showcases a vast collection of interesting memorabilia.

Shop at the gorgeous boutique stores and eat at one of the local cafés, where you can savour the flavours of fresh local produce.

Down by the river’s edge you will discover Wingham Brush, a nature reserve with a difference. Covering 8 hectares of subtropical floodplain rainforest, it is one of only a few remnants of this rare rainforest type in Australia. Giant Moreton Bay figs tower over a gently winding boardwalk, where you will discover a large colony of endangered grey-headed flying foxes.

Surprising Nabiac

If you’re travelling north from Sydney, the first village you’ll come across is Nabiac, and while it may not seem like much from the road, there is so much to see and do.

Nabiac is a charming township that houses the National Motorcycle Museum of Australia, some gorgeous boutique shops, delicious cafés, a local winery and an award winning farmstay - all within a short drive from the town centre.

The National Motorcycle Museum of Australia is a must see - and not only for motorbike enthusiasts! The museum is owned by the Kelleher family and plays host to over 700 motorcycles, a huge range of memorabilia, toys and an extensive gift shop.

Nabiac is also home to some fantastic vintage shops for visitors to meander through and snap up bargain buys. There is something for everyone with wares including retro furniture, clothing, jewellery, knick-knacks and other unique gift ideas.

Once the hunger has built up, the Greenhouse Café nearby offers delicious meals, superb organic coffee and beautiful gardens to relax and take in the surroundings.

A trip to the local winery, Villa d’Esta Vineyard, is another popular experience that is not to be missed.

This scenic winery is made up of 12 acres of grapes and the passionate Hungarian wine maker takes great pleasure in sharing his wines and explaining their traditional wine making techniques.

Just out of town, visitors can stretch their legs and minds at the unique Honeycomb Valley Farm which is a ‘little farm with a big picture’. It’s a great place to take the kids as they can meet the friendly farm animals, learn about stingless native bees and you can check out the farm gate shop.

Tinonee was one of the earliest settlements in the Manning Valley. What was once a bustling town centre is now a peaceful riverside village and home to a historical museum, general store, café and artisan gallery.

Killabakh is a small village 20 minutes north of Wingham towards Comboyne.

As well as regular open gardens, each spring the community holds its ‘Day in the Country’ event. The festival celebrates locally made arts and crafts and fresh local produce. There is entertainment and home cooked country style food to be enjoyed.

Tinonee

If you’re looking to escape from it all, Tinonee is the place to go with gorgeous country retreats, farmstays, secluded cabins, B&B’s and self contained cottages.

Mondrook Mondrook is a village that offers warm, country hospitality with charming cafés, galleries and an artisans retreat.

Just minutes from Mondrook lies a fabulous photo opportunity from Brushy Cutting Lookout. Here you’ll snap breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding Valley, encapsulating the rural side of the Manning Valley beautifully.

Croki Just north of Cundletown, along the Pacific Highway, lies Croki, a sleepy rural village on the river surrounded by lush dairy farms.

Here you’ll discover spectacular scenery over Oxley and Mitchells Islands to the south and the Brother Mountains to the north.

The giant Moreton Bay fig trees are great for picnicking under. Croki is also home to a Riverside Caravan Park, set amongst a beautiful tropical garden of palms, hibiscus and gums with absolute river frontage.

Killabakh

Coopernook Peace and quiet has descended on the village of Coopernook since the highway was diverted, making it even more attractive as the gateway to the northern forests which offer spectacular lookouts and waterfalls.

The local pub on the river offers friendly hospitality and great bistro meals and there is a riverside park close by which has BBQ facilities, a boat ramp and floating pontoon.

Krambach From Tinonee, travel west along The Bucketts Way towards Gloucester to the hillside village of Krambach.

Krambach features a local pub and boasts a unique country golf course with the greens fenced off from cattle and kangaroos.

The views from Krambach extend towards Gloucester overlooking idyllic countryside with secluded villages dotted along the way.

magnificent The Manning Valley is an area rich with natural assets and unexplored forests. From the coast to the hinterland, the Manning Valley offers 9 stunning National Parks and Reserves that conceal some of our best kept secrets.

Coorabakh National Park Crowdy Bay National Park Crowdy Bay National Park (9,519 hectares) has long been admired for its rugged coastline cliffs, rockpools and beaches, while its heath and forests are a haven for wildlife.

At low tide, explore the rock formations and pools along the cliff-base walk.

There is great fishing, plenty of opportunities for swimming, surfing and water activities and it is a particularly fruitful area for bird watching.

The park’s main topographical feature and its highest point, is Diamond Head, which rises abruptly to 113 metres. It takes its name from quartz crystals that are found in the area.

A number of camping areas at Diamond Head accommodate short term camping with amenities, tables and fireplaces.

Around 25 kilometres north of Taree take a drive through Coorabakh National Park.

Wander amongst giant Blackbutt forest over the shaded boardwalks of the Starrs Creek sub tropical rainforest. Amble down along a fresh creek to Newbys Cave and if the day is warm you simply have to take yourself for a dip in the ever cool Waitui Falls. Some of the most amazing views over the Manning Valley and out to the coastline can be enjoyed here from both Newbys and Flat Rock lookouts.

Be sure to check out Big Nellie, Flat Nellie and Little Nellie, prominent ancient volcanic plugs which are part of the same volcanic vent that formed the famous Glass House Mountains in Queensland.

Good overnight camping facilities are available at Coopernook Forest Park located in the adjacent Coopernook State Forest, just 10 minutes from the highway.

Tapin Tops National Park Tapin Tops National Park (10,828 ha) is located on Knodingbul Road, approximately 30kms north-west of Wingham.

The Tapin Tops rest area is a well developed picnic area, with amenities, gas BBQs, picnic shelters and some gorgeous shady camp spots. The park was once a forestry work camp and features an array of European deciduous trees that do well in this mountain environment. Most noticeable is the row of impressive Californian redwoods which were planted in the rich volcanic soil in the early 1960’s.

Two walks are available off the picnic area; an easy 15 minute rainforest walk featuring a variety of rainforest species like Red Cedar, Coachwood, Brushbox, Corkwood and Yellow Carabeen. Or opt for the more strenuous 35 minute walk through open Sclerophyll forest, taking in some stunning trees and ferns commonly found in the area.

Potoroo picnic area located on Little Run Creek is a beautiful place for a picnic. The spectacular Potoroo Falls lie a kilometre upstream past NSW’s largest recorded Watergum in the adjacent State Forest.

Take your swimming gear on a hot day, the water’s great. Tapin Tops also offers some great 4WDing opportunities.

Saltwater National Park Saltwater National Park adjoining Saltwater beach has special significance for the local Aboriginal community (Biripi).

This National Park contains Aboriginal sites, which relate to Dreamtime beliefs and a section of the park has been declared an Aboriginal Place.

There is swimming and surfing at the beach and canoeing in the tranquil waters of Khappinghat Creek. The lagoon nestled against the Reserve provides safe swimming for families.

The picnic area has gas BBQs, picnic tables, amenities and cold showers.

Take a walk through the rainforest on the headland or explore the Five Islands walking track, which follows Khappinghat Creek in the Nature Reserve.

From Wingham, follow the Tourist Drive 8 signs to the legendary Ellenborough Falls at Elands.

Just off the Pacific Highway at Spring Hill Road lives Cattai Wetlands, a beautiful coastal wetland and hidden gem of the Manning Valley.

At 200 metres, Ellenborough Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the Manning Valley’s biggest natural attractions.

Admire the natural beauty from the viewing platform at the top, or for the more adventurous, take the 641 timber steps to the bottom of the valley where you’ll get so close you’ll feel the spray and hear the roar of the falls. Allow 10 minutes or one hour.

Wingham Brush Nature Reserve For a nature reserve with a difference, head to Wingham Brush, located in the historical river town of Wingham.

This subtropical rainforest remnant is part of the last remaining 10 hectares of floodplain rainforest in NSW. It showcases giant Moreton Bay figs towering over a gently winding boardwalk, and is one of the largest permanent breeding populations of the endangered grey-headed flying fox.

Cattai Wetlands provide a sanctuary for over 180 species of birds, kangaroos, wallabies and regularly spotted goannas. Make your way along one of the many walking tracks, go bird watching, take a picnic or just relax and enjoy the scenery.

The wetlands are open to the public from Friday to Monday from 8am-3pm and everyday during the school holidays. Guided tours are also available by appointment – call Greater Taree City Council on 02 6592 5399.

If you get to the Brush on sunset, the sight of thousands of flying foxes heading out for the evening meal is just amazing.

There is also overnight camping available for self-contained vehicles at the entrance to the brush on Wingham Reserve.

Hot tip – Don’t forget to pack the Aeroguard as the mossies love Cattai Wetlands just as much as we do!

Tourist Drive 2 Distance 149km Taree • Tinonee • Krambach • Gloucester • Stroud • Raymond Terrace Along the way: On one of the oldest tourist drives enjoy Tinonee Museum, Krambach Golf Course, Mograni Lookout and Barrington Tops National Park.

The Bucketts Way was established as early as 1840, making it one of the oldest tourist drives and a great scenic alternative to the Pacific Highway. It is also the main access road to the World Heritage Listed Barrington Tops National Park.

Start the drive in the river town of Taree which is the major commercial centre of the Manning Valley boasting great shopping and restaurants. Tinonee, which is one of the earliest settlements in the Manning Valley, is where you can step back in time at the local museum.

The half way point between Taree and Gloucester is Krambach where you can have a hit of golf at ‘Royal Krambach’ and enjoy a counter lunch at the historical pub. Continuing along The Buckets Way is Gloucester, a town that actually sits in the crater of an ancient volcano and is surrounded by magnificent mountain ranges. Stroud is where you can grab a coffee and do one of the lovely heritage walks.

Black Head, Red Head and Diamond Beach: Wallamba River, Wallis Lake, Smiths Lake, Myall Lakes, Sugar Loaf Point Lighthouse and The Grandis, the tallest tree in NSW in Myall Lakes National Park.

Heading south from Taree along the Pacific Highway, you will reach the exit sign for Rainbow Flat to commence Tourist Drive 6.

Just 10 minutes down the road you will find the turn off for the quaint seaside villages of Hallidays Point, Black Head, Red Head and Diamond Beach where you can take your pick of pristine beaches for a swim.

Continuing along The Lakes Way you will follow the Wallamba River, into the picturesque twin towns of Forster and Tuncurry. From the breakwall, it’s not uncommon to spot dolphins, turtles and seals.

South from Forster there is Booti Booti National Park, Pacific Palms, Coomba Park, Smith Lakes, Wallingat National Park and Seal Rocks.

The drive will then continue through the picturesque Myall Lakes National Park until you meet back up with the highway near the historic town of Bulahdelah.

Taree • Wingham • Bobin • Elands • Comboyne • Wauchope Along the way: Bent On Food, Wingham Brush, Wingham Historical Museum, Red Tail Wines, Ellenborough Falls, Timbertown.

Tourist Drive 8 is a beautiful drive that meanders through some of the most lush and fertile land on the Mid North Coast.

From Taree you will head to the historic township of Wingham where you’ll discover 10 ha of subtropical flood plain rainforest at Wingham Brush. Stroll along a gently winding boardwalk, spot flying foxes and admire the giant Moreton Bay figs. Enjoy the Wingham Museum, lunch at a local café and enjoying some retail therapy at the local boutique stores is also a must.

From Wingham, follow the tourist signs to Ellenborough Falls, where you will pass through the quaint village of Bobin. At 200 metres, Ellenborough Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in the Southern Hemisphere with great views from the top or for the more adventurous, the walk to the bottom of the Gorge has 641 steps.

Once you’re done admiring the falls, your next stop is Comboyne, a gorgeous village with lush country views. Be sure to pick up some cheese and check out the quirky local café! Continue through the village and the road will lead you to Wauchope, which is home to Timbertown. Make sure you stop, check it out and take a step back in time.

Continue along Tourist Drive 2 to join the Pacific Highway at Raymond Terrace.

As the closest seaside community to Taree and Wingham, Old Bar is a top choice for holiday fun.

Experience beautiful bush and beach along the Old Bar walking trail. There are various entry points, the main ones being behind the Old Bar air strip and between Old Bar village and Mud Bishop’s Reserve.

There are four kilometres of scenic walking tracks and it is home to many bird species. Wallabies, koalas and echidnas have been sighted and during Spring the wildflowers are abundant.

Allow an hour to see the wonders of this beautiful coastal area.

The views from the Headland walking track at Saltwater National Park, are not only spectacular, it is a great place to go whale watching. Explore the Five Islands Walking Track which follows Khappinghat Creek in the nature reserve. Go paddle boarding, swim or fish amongst the mangroves. Swim, surf or fish at the beach.

Stop off on your way to Manning Point at Bohnock and hire a boat to explore our waterways or take your 4WD south to the Manning Entrance State Park and Farquhar Inlet for great camping and fishing.

Surrounded by ancient rainforests, Dingo Tops camp ground makes for a quiet, yet interesting, place to base yourself when exploring the Tapin Tops National Park.

This hidden gem of the Manning Valley is a sanctuary for threatened fauna species.

It’s one of the few places you’ll see redlegged pademelons, greater gliders and koalas in abundance.

The Tapin Tops rest area is a well developed picnic area, with amenities, gas BBQs, picnic shelters and some gorgeous shady camp spots.

Potoroo Picnic Area located on Little Run Creek is a beautiful place for a picnic. The spectacular Potoroo Falls lie a kilometre upstream past NSW’s largest recorded Watergum in the adjacent State Forest.

Take your swimming gear on a hot day, the water is great.

While you’re in the area stop off at Browns Lookout and explore the old mines.

The tranquil seaside village of Harrington sits at the northern mouth of the Manning River, with great views of the area from the Pilot Hill Lookout over the river delta.

Harrington’s traditional seaside lifestyle is where you can cast a line for that elusive catch of the day or stop in at one of the pubs, clubs and cafés for great views and great food.

Continue north of Harrington to the small fishing village of Crowdy Head. A must-do for all is a visit to the iconic Crowdy Head Lighthouse. The lighthouse, perched high on the headland, provides 360-degree views of the coast.

Crowdy Head beach is patrolled in summer with a Surf Life Saving Club and kiosk. The beach has 4WD access available. Crowdy Head South Beach is a beautiful natural beach, which has 4WD access and it is not patrolled.

Continuing north takes you through Crowdy Bay National Park. Highlights include Kylie’s Beach and Diamond Head.

If time allows, explore the sleepy river side towns of Dunbogan and Laurieton and a must do is North Brother and Dooragan National Park, for great views over the Three Brothers Region from the paved road to the top.

South west through Johns River lies truly charming villages at verdant Hannam Vale. This is the gateway to Coorabakh National Park. Your route runs along the breathtaking Lansdowne Escarpment passing Flat Rock Lookout, Big Nellie, Newbys Lookout, Vincent’s Lookout and Newbys Cave walk.

Cattai Wetlands at Coopernook offer great views of the Three Brothers Mountains with a ring trail around the lagoon (open Friday – Monday, 8am – 3pm)

Newbys Creek & cave walk A short five minute walk up the creek from Newbys Creek Road in Coorabakh National Park, you will discover the fascinating Newbys Cave. The cave has a large overhanging rock formation, making a natural shelter in the creek bed. The walk continues further upstream amongst lush ferns and sparkling creek waters.

Allow 30 minutes.

Diamond Head loop track The Diamond Head Loop Track offers scenic coastal views across Crowdy Bay National Park. Starting at the Diamond Head Camping Ground and continuing to Indian Head, the well-formed track will guide you through hills and forests with breathtaking lookouts. At the southern end of the walk you will get views of the captivating eroding cliff arches. 4.8km, allow 2 hours.

Throughout the Manning Valley there are reminders of our proud indigenous, pioneering, agricultural and maritime history.

Our History The original occupiers of the Manning Valley were speakers of the Biripi language.

Today the term Biripi has come to signify the people rather than just the language.

The first European settlers and explorers arrived in the Manning Valley in the early 1800’s. As they arrived they observed the lifestyle of the populous Aboriginal people, spread over the entire region, occupying all manner of ecosystems, marine, riverine and inland. There were distinct groups of Aboriginal people and attributed lands around various points in the landscape.

These distinct groups had lifestyles and material cultures varying slightly from one another, depending upon their immediate environment. However, they all spoke the Biripi language.

Saltwater Reserve has special significance for the local Aboriginal community. It contains Aboriginal sites which relate to Dreamtime beliefs. The reserve is part of the Saltwater National Park.

European recognition of the Manning Valley dates back to Captain Cook’s voyage along the east coast in 1770 when he named the mountain ranges to the north of Taree as South, Middle and North Brother mountains.

John Oxley first explored the Manning Valley in 1818 when he named Harrington on the mouth of the Manning River. Later that same year he named the second Manning River outlet Farquhar Lake, believing it to be lake rather than a river outlet. Today the area is known as Old Bar. In Harrington and Crowdy Head, information signs can be found on Pilot Hill and Crowdy Headland outlining the macabre maritime history with stories of ship wrecks and drownings.

The first township settlement was “Bungay” at Wingham as a farm settlement in the 1840s and Wingham and Tinonee were established in the 1850s as government towns, their function being river ports for the cedar trade. These towns, along with Taree and Cundletown on both sides of the Manning River boast rich pioneering and agricultural history, which can be discovered at one of our three regional museums located at Tinonee, Wingham and Cundletown.

The last of the Australian bushrangers – Jimmy Governor, an Aboriginal (The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith) was captured at Bobin near Wingham. The jail where he was held before he was hung still stands in the Wingham Historical Museum.

Her knowledge is only matched by her passion and preservation of our local history.

Over recent years Barbara and her passionate team of volunteers have created one of the best regional Museums in New South Wales. It features beautifully presented displays demonstrating the differing lifestyles and tools pioneers had.
