THERMAL MODELLING ASSESSMENT USING THERM With the introduction of the revised Building Regulations Part L, the calculation and assessment of thermal bridge performance will have greater impact than ever before. Linear thermal bridges and associated Ψ Values previously inserted by default, are now required to be accurately calculated in order to receive the maximum benefit, thus all details will require modelling.
Thermal modelling training is now available as a 3 Day course and is essential for energy assessors when calculating Standard Assessment Procedures (SAP) and Simplified Building Energy Models (SBEM) reports. Target Zero’s training will enable thermal performance modellers to create calculations of thermal performance to recognised standards and conventions, including calculating thermal transmittance values (Ψ Values), temperature factors (f) and elemental U-Values. The course uses the conventions from the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP) from the German Passivhaus Institut, but also shows how to derive psi values for SAP calculations.
Attendance on this training course will provide: An understanding of what a PSI value represents. Clarity about when PSI calculations are required. Understanding of different conventions for PSI values and how to convert between them. Appreciation of the importance of eliminating thermal bridges at the design stage. Experience of calculating PSI values using 2D Thermal Analysis Software (Therm). Understanding of EN standards and how to apply these to ground floors and windows. Good computer skills including a working knowledge of MS Excel. Ability to read building plans and knowledge of typical construction methods. Computers are at the venue with the software loaded.
What does the course cover? Introduction, Heat transfer – convection, radiation and conduction, BR 443 U value conventions, Introducing BS EN ISO 6946, BS EN 10211 and BR 497, Thermal Bridges – repeating, non repeating etc., Temperature factor. Software Introduction, Main Window & toolbar, Pre-processor window & toolbar, Default material window, Boundary conditions, Post-processor window & toolbar, Reports, Input & solving the problem examples, Example 1 – corner (normal and inverted), Example 2 – Window cill. Input & solving the problem examples, Example 3 – Window jamb, Example 4 – Window head. Using Thermal Bridging data, Entering into PHPP, Entering into SAP 2009 – Y factor.
Tutor Profile: Andrew Lundberg is an Irish Certified Passive House designer and low-energy building consultant based in Dublin. Having spent a number of years in the commercial construction industry in Ireland, he then moved to Vienna, Austria where he was enthused and impressed by the low-energy construction practices which were everywhere to see there. He undertook a MSc. in Renewable Energy Resources & Energy Management at the University of Ulster, writing a thesis on the potential effects of climate change on Passive House performance in Ireland. Since graduating in 2009, Andrew has worked as an independent Passive House designer and Thermal Bridging consultant. In support of his knowledge he has always completed courses in Thermal Bridging Analysis (Passive House Academy), Hygrothermal Analysis of Buildings (Fraunhofer Institute), Air-tightness of buildings (SIGA), AutoCAD as well as Project Management (PMI). Andrews teaches the PHPP software & thermal bridging analysis. The Thermal Modelling workshop cost is €500. Included course material, tea/coffee and lunch.
