5 swim trunk patterns that should be seen on beaches ERIC WECK CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Everyone knows that spring break is all about making a statement. One way or another, you have to stand out. I mean, how else are you going to beat everyone else’s story when school starts up again? There are a few ways to go about this. Some involve a lot of embarrassment while others entail a lot of disgusting substances. Considering you’re most likely heading south, swim trunks are clearly the prime choice for knocking ‘em dead. Here five bathing suit styles and patterns to really make you one of a kind.
BOOTY BRANDING
Simply

classic
—
who
doesn’t love a good “juicy” on their butt? You can guarantee ever yone’s anaconda will be wearing a pair of painted on booty branders.
PRINTED PICTURES
There is an abundance of websites out there that are willing to print a picture of your choice onto select styles of clothing. There are also tons of places that do it on the boardwalk. Considering this, and the fact that the embarrassing picture of your friend from a few years ago is screaming to be printed onto clothing, why not debut it on spring break? They can’t possibly get mad at you — you are on the beach with a piña colada in your hand.
EMOJIS
Who doesn’t love emojis? Buying a swimsuit littered with the emoji of your choice is sure to have all the others be jealous of you.
ANIMAL PRINTS AND SHAPES
Wearing animal prints to the beach is a little too Jersey Shore to be fashionable these days, but if you’re gonna be the coolest cat on the beach, you don’t really need to be Gucci down to the socks anyway.
HAWAIIAN PRINTS
If you are willing to just stick with the classics, sport a nice Hawaiian print. They may be common, but they are still bold.

DIY Rutgers bikini to wear over spring break NICOLETTE ACCARDI FEATURES EDITOR
Rutgers may excel at making t-shirts and sweatpants, but they are missing one important article of clothing — a bikini. Spring break is coming up, and what are you going to wear to the beach? A sweat suit? No, I didn’t think so. Since Rutgers lacks in the bikini department, I present to you a DIY, school-spirited, glitter infused bikini that will make Victoria’s Secret wish it was in their swim wear collection.
WHAT YOU NEED:
- A white bikini - Red and silver glitter glue How to make: Place the side of both the top and bottoms you are going to use glitter glue on up, so that no
smudges are made. Take your bikini top and carefully draw a capital R on the left side and a capital U on the right side with red glitter glue. Spread red glitter glue within the R and the U as well. Make sure to spread enough so the R and the U don’t look clumpy. Take your bikini bottoms and place it back side facing up. Write “RUTGERS” in capitalized letters across the back. Instead of using just red glitter glue, alternate red and silver glitter glue for every other letter. Wait a day for your bikini to dry to ensure that it doesn’t get ruined. You are now going to wow your friends at the beach with your one-of-a-kind masterpiece. If anyone asks you if you’re artsy, you can now say, “Hell yea I am, I made a bikini.”

Enjoy RU frozen sangria to fulfill all your icey, refreshing beverage needs JULIA TERRANOVA CONTRIBUTING WRITER
If you’re feeling bored of your drink of choice, swap it out for this Rutgers-inspired frosty drink. CHLOE COFFMAN / ASSOCIATE PHOTO EDITOR
Spring break is almost here. Even if you’re not spending it sunbathing on an island, you can still enjoy a refreshing, iced beverage. This frozen sangria takes its cue from Spain. It incorporates red wine, frozen berries and lime juice for a twist on the classic. Make this Rutgers-inspired red
drink for your friends at home and spread your school pride. Whatever red wine you have on hand will work for this recipe. Definitely don’t splurge on anything expensive. If you have a choice, a drier red wine is better. Any frozen berries are fine — I used a mix of strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. If you want to make this recipe virgin, swap out the wine for cranberry juice.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup red wine (or cranberry juice) - Handful of red wine ice cubes (regular ice cubes are fine too) - Juice of 1/2 lime - 3/4 cup frozen mixed berries - Honey, for sweetening Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass, garnish with lime and enjoy.

Curse the spring break gods for taking one good look at your slim bank account balance and laughing. Once again, you have somehow found yourself stuck at home. After a delightful nap in your childhood bed and cruise on Instagram, it finally sinks in. While your best friends are splashing around in paradise and taking advantage of the tiki bar’s unlimited refills, you’ve somehow been rotated back into doing household chores. Fear not, anxious ones — as the old saying goes, “If you can’t join them, beat them.” While your fellow land-locked Rutgers peers use their staycation spring break to “get ahead of schoolwork” or “hit the gym,” you know better. While the powers above can withhold a
plane ticket, no one can take away your island state of mind. In the spirit of the holiday, here are some tips to help you transform your bedroom into the personal oasis you deserve. Take heed, and take note — we’ve got some rays to catch.
ISLAND RULES
- As a private beach, trespassing is not permitted, so shout at the neighbors if they get too close to the window. - While this is generally not a human-friendly beach, wildlife is always welcome. Buster the dog and Felix the cat, this means you. - Only oceanic movies allowed — “Blue Crush,” “Titanic,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Jaws” and “Castaway” are recommended. - Since you’re in a different tropical time zone, there is no need to acknowledge family members
banging on your door and insisting you help with dinner. - Servants must report in uniform (pressed polo shirt tucked into khaki shorts) whenever beckoned via text message, bringing one’s chilled beverage of choice. This is the perfect career opportunity for younger siblings to begin resume building.
BEACH SUPPLIES
- Bags of sand, best applied by dousing the entire floor to get the full beach effect. - Towels for morning sandbar yoga. - Kiddie pool, perfect for afternoon dips for you and the beloved wildlife. - Ukulele, to strike out seaside tunes at sunset. - Excellent self-tanner, because hey, nobody needs to know that you never left New Jersey.

GARNIER SKIN RENEW MIRACLE SKIN PERFECTOR BB CREAM: $12
Warm weather signals that it’s time to leave behind our full coverage foundations. Garnier’s BB Cream is perfect for spring because of its light to medium coverage and SPF 15. BB Creams match your exact shade once they come in contact with your skin, which is why this product only comes in light/medium and medium/deep. This takes the guessing game out of matching your foundation to your skin. If you don’t feel like venturing out, stick to your homeland by doing some of these activites in New Brunswick. SEPHORA COLLECTION CONTOUR EYE PENCIL 12-HR
WEAR WATERPROOF: $10
This liner is creamy at first, which leaves time to smoke it out with a smudging tool or to simply glide it along the waterline. It dries within minutes for a matte, waterproof finish that lasts all day. As if this product wasn’t amazing enough, it also comes in 25 highly-pigmented colors. Want to be daring and try something other than black? Check out the shade “Sun Tan.” This beautiful, copper shade is guaranteed to spice up your spring makeup routine.
MAYBELLINE VOLUM’ EXPRESS THE ROCKET MASCARA WATERPROOF: $7
Let’s face it, sometimes the hottest makeup is a bit out of our price range — we are college students, after all. This affordable, waterproof mascara is great because you can go for a swim without the dreaded mascara lines. The wand also makes it easy to
keep lashes looking enhanced minus the clumps.
TOO-FACED SUN BUNNY NATURAL BRONZER: $30
The versatility of this product will keep your makeup bag small and ready for travel. The “Sun Bunny” is divided into two sections — the light bronzer can be used as an eyeshadow color, and the dark bronzer can be used as a contour powder. Both tones can be used together for a glowing, bronzed look. Making the transition to lightweight and waterproof products for the warm weather is as essential as trading UGG boots for flip flops. With these basic items, you will have everything you need in order to conquer spring break. These four products can be applied in under three minutes to create simple day and night looks. Remember, there is always enough time for a little bit of makeup.

Feeling invincible over spring break? Be cautious as well LAURA DENGROVE CORRESPONDENT
Ah spring break, the smell of alcohol, sunscreen and vape smoke is practically filling the air at the mere thought of it. For those staying in New Jersey this spring break, having fun in the clouds or lukewarm weather, you must keep a level head about all the spring break fun. We’ve all been there — where you want to just let loose and party, especially after a midterm just kicked your ass into next semester. While the partying and alcoholic beverages that will be thrown your way are enticing, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be wear y of it all. We have all heard the horror stories of spiked drinks, alcohol poisoning and other threats that may wander your way during this fateful week. Don’t think you are immune to the effects of alcohol or worse, predators that may wander your way during spring break. Jessica Villeza, a School of Nursing sophomore, talked a bit about the horrific fears of spring break that are commonly mentioned. Unfortunately, few actually fear it will happen to them. “A terrible thought has crossed my mind on the fears of spring break that I feel few forget to mention, when it should be talked about a lot more especially at Rutgers,” Villeza said. “With the rape culture so
prominent in our society, I’m always fearful of what is in that drink that is passed along to others, especially during wild spring break vacations. People often forget to check what is being given to them, so if there was ever a real fear to worr y about while on spring break, I believe it to be that.” While it feels as if spiked drinks and other predator y activities are talked about a lot, it is common to think it’ll happen
“Alcohol poisoning is a real thing and can happen to anyone if you aren’t careful.” to you or someone you know. But it’s better safe than sorr y, so to avoid any trauma, please grab your own beverage and drink responsibly. Under the lines of drinking responsibly, the idea of alcohol poisoning is also one people should fear before asking for that next round of Fireball shots. Yes, you only live once, but don’t waste it by being wasted after one too many shots after your “buddy” dared you to take another. Alcohol poisoning is a real thing and can happen to anyone if you aren’t careful. To dodge
this, bring a flask of water with you instead of Patrón Tequila and stay hydrated. It may be the difference between taking a trip to Miami Beach or a trip to the hospital. Victoria Sharp, a School of Nursing sophomore, thinks spring break isn’t all doom and gloom. It can be one of the best times of your college career if you are smart about it. “Spring Break is amazing, it’s what most of us look for ward to, but my friends and I wont be a statistic of the spring break horror stories that get bounced around ever y year,” Sharp said. “We want to, as Rick from Rick and Morty says, ‘Get Schwifty,’ but we don’t want to get hurt while doing so. We are all just tr ying to have fun, but we know to stay smart about it.” Most Rutgers students agree that while fun in the sun can be intoxicating, and sound even better while intoxicated, it’s always better to remind yourself what that fun may entail. No one is saying to lose all notions of fun and be wear y of ever y single thing that comes your way, but be smart, and remember that with ever y action there is a reaction. You don’t want to end up being a terrible statistic, so stay smart and have fun. You go to Rutgers, so we know you have a noggin. Just remember to use it when you down that first shot of Fireball on a beach somewhere.
