January 2024 issue 220 1

Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the British Isles, has sought to expand its collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent, private or joint railway company which operated (obtained an act of parliament or wayleaves and started construction). There were over 1,900 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over a 1,200 of these companies. They include some freight, military, narrow gauge and mineral only railways. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: 1. secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution 2. reduce the insurance premium 3. continue to add to the collection 4. add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970’s onwards 5. provide a public access facility 6. promote the collection 7. ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical 8. ensure that sufficient finances are in place to achieve to above objectives It is proposed that the archive and funding is eventually transferred under agreement to the Bodleian Library in Oxford as part of the John Johnson Collection. This guide provides details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened or partially built. All the railway companies, from which examples of paperwork are held, appear in alphabetical order with the date of the document shown. After the date an alphabetical code indicates the type of paperwork held, please see the index below. Access to the Collection Access to the East Anglia items: 34

Access to items located in East Anglia can be arranged by prior appointment only and you should contact the archivist specifying what you would like to see. The venue to access the collection is usually at the Nelson Hotel opposite Norwich Railway station and can only be arranged at times acceptable to the voluntary archivist. Copies of items from the collection can be made available if copying, and postal charges are offered.

Research The best resources so far found for detailed research on UK Railway companies are the following: Books: Bradshaw’s shareholders directories and timetables* The David & Charles series “A Regional History of the Railways of Great Britain” An Historical Geography of the Railways of the British Isles by Ernest Carter* Railway Company Minute Books at the National Archive Offices Railway ancestors by David T Hawkins (PRO publication) Railway Records a guide to sources by Cliff Edwards (PRO publication) Johnson’s Atlas & Gazetteer of the Railways of Ireland by Stephen Johnson The Railways of Great Britain A Historical Atlas Col. M H Cobb Directory of the Railway Companies of Great Britain by Donald J Grant – this publication has been digitised by Google and a link is here *Whilst these are a useful publications inaccuracies have been noted

Internet resources One of the best found so far is Ewan Crawford’s www.railbrit.co.uk Also, Mathew Bromley’s http://www.railmaponline.com/UKIEMap.php is a brilliant piece of work and is used extensively by the archive for research. Some details may be found on Wikipedia sites but this data is always suspect as it is placed by individuals who are not always 100% accurate and resources shown may be dubious. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_railway_companies_involved_in_the_1923_grouping The National Archives have a huge collection of railway documents and a search through the site is well worth the effort. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ The Railway & Canal Historical Society also has some details here https://rchs.org.uk/links-toresources/ For family research we recommend using the National Railway Museum and details are here: https://www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/research-and-archive/further-resources/family-history For academic research into railway studies try: https://www.york.ac.uk/railway-studies/ There are also railway staff records from 1833 to 1963 at www.ancestry.co.uk this is a pay to view website For a comprehensive list of closed lines REGISTER OF CLOSED RAILWAYS A Comprehensive Register of the Railway Lines of Great Britain Closed to Passenger Services since 1901 www.registerofclosedrailways.co.uk/ 35

National Archives: You may find details here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. A useful addition is a record of all Records of the privately owned railway companies (and their predecessors) taken over by the British Transport Commission under the Transport Act 1947 is here: http://tinyurl.com/box5dk5 Based at Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 4DU (020 8876 3444). This repository, formerly known as the Public Record Office, contains the principal records of the railway, canal and associated companies which came to be nationalised in 1948 (class RAIL) and of the British Transport Commission, Railway Executive and British Railways Board (class AN). Class AN also contains the records of the Road Haulage Executive, Road Passenger Executive and Docks & Inland Waterways Executive; also, British Road Services (to 1968) and some records of the Transport Holding Company. The railway records include administrative and staff records and timetables; and there are canal administrative records (records relating to some navigations are held in other collections in the PRO). Maps, plans and photographs are found in these collections and elsewhere. The former British Transport Historical Records Library contains printed books and pamphlets (class ZLIB) and periodicals (class ZPER) covering the period 1694-1982, much of it issued by operators themselves; and the private collection of W. E. Hayward relates mainly to minor railways. The PRO Library (open access) includes Acts of Parliament, a strong collection of books and periodicals on local history, and some railway periodicals. The National Archives also maintains the National Register of Archives (listing documents in other collections), which can be searched, online. Access by public transport: Kew Gardens station (National Rail/London Underground) is nearby. National Railway Museum (NRM) The National Railway Museum has a large collection of documents but only a very small selection of these are ever displayed. To access the NRM collection you will need to make an appointment through the NRM research and archive section: http://www.nrm.org.uk/ResearchAndArchive.aspx Archives held by Network Rail Network Rail hold a significant collection of drawings and documents which they inherited from British Rail (via Railtrack). The collection cannot be accessed by the public. However, you can write to them for information and details are contained in the link below. www.networkrail.co.uk/VirtualArchive/AboutTheArchive Map Archives Every proposal to Parliament for a new canal or railway had to be accompanied by a plan of the intention; these are held in the Parliamentary Archives and by the relevant county archives. Estate maps, and maps associated with property deeds, can also be useful. Ordnance Survey maps, particularly the 1:2,500 and 1:10,560 series are a basic tool for any historical investigation. Local archives and many libraries hold copies; alternatively they can be accessed on-line (at the cost of a monthly subscription) from a site sponsored by the Ordnance Survey and the website of the National Library of Scotland provides free coverage of the whole of Britain for some series. This information is courtesy of the Railway and Canal Historical Society National Archives of Ireland: Bishop Street, Dublin 8, Republic of Ireland (00 353 1 407 2300). The archives here most likely to be of interest to transport historians are those of the Office of 36

Public Works which from its establishment in 1831 took various responsibilities for inland waterways, roads, harbours, and supervision of railways. National Archives of Scotland: If you are looking for information on railways in Scotland, the Scottish Archive Network (www.scan.org.uk) provides a searchable online catalogue for the National Archives of Scotland and over 50 other archives. Based at HM General Register House, 2 Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3YY (0131 535 1314) and at the Scottish Railway Archive at West Register House, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, EH2 4DJ. You are strongly advised to telephone beforehand to check the location of the records you are interested in. For more details of the collections, choose 'The Collections' from the NAS home page, and then select Transport Records. The Scottish Railway Archive contains official records of Scottish railway companies and their canal and shipping constituents, including minutes and reports, letter books, deeds and agreements, circulars, locomotive, rolling stock and civil engineers records, station traffic books, accident reports, and staff records. The NAS also holds an important collection of specialised books and periodicals on transport subjects, mostly inherited from the old railway companies and dating back to the 1840s, as well as timetables, publicity material, engineering and architectural drawings and photographs. National Monuments Record Centre: Kemble Drive, Swindon, SN2 2GZ (01703 414600). Headquarters of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (in the former Great Western Railway works general office building); holds extensive pictorial records of England's built heritage, including Rokeby collection of railway station photographs and Aerofilms and other aerial photographic cover. Search room also in London. Images commercially available from Heritage Image Partnership. Access by public transport: Swindon station (National Rail) nearby. Portcullis Archive Catalogue: House of Lords Record Office, House of Lords, London, SW1A 0PW (020 7219 3074). There is an electronic catalogue containing descriptions of around 3 million records held by the Parliamentary Archives. Contains records of Parliamentary proceedings on the Private Bills which were the normal means by which canals, turnpike trusts, railways, harbour authorities and similar undertakings sought to be incorporated and given powers to construct and operate their work Public Record Office of Northern Ireland: 66 Balmoral Avenue, Belfast, BT9 6NY (028 90 251318). Includes records of the Ulster Transport Authority and constituents (including Belfast Corporation Transport and the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board) 1820-1976, together with other items relating to railway companies received as private deposits, and of the Ministries of Commerce and Home Affairs (later, Development), having responsibility for transport. The Cooper collection also contains some relevant material.
