DE LUCHA DE TARLETON

TO OUR GUESTS

Flash Photography will be taking pictures of individual graduates during the ceremony. We ask that all guests remain seated while taking pictures and videos during the processional, the ceremony and recessional. Aisles must remain clear at all times for safety reasons.

Tarleton State University is providing Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) for this event for our deaf and hard of hearing guests.

TARLETON STATE LEGACY

Students marked as Legacy have indicated a member of their family also graduated from the university.

THIS PROGRAM IS NOT AN OFFICIAL GRADUATION LIST

While every effort is made to ensure accuracy in this commencement program, printing deadlines sometimes prevent inclusion of candidates’ names, or may result in the use of names of persons not completing graduation requirements. Names are listed as the candidate has requested their name to appear on their diploma. All honors indicated in this program are tentative. Official degree honors for diplomas and transcripts will be determined after final grades are reported. This printed program, therefore, should not be used to determine a student’s academic or degree status. The university’s official registry for conferral of degrees is the student’s permanent academic record, kept by the Office of the University Registrar.

A NUESTROS INVITADOS

LEGADO DE TARLETON STATE

The mace is a ceremonial staff traditionally displayed as a symbol of authority. Historically, the use of a mace dates back to the Middle Ages and was carried before or placed near a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. The University Mace is borne by the Provost at the beginning of each commencement ceremony. Tarleton unveiled a new mace on the inauguration day of its 15th president. The University Mace is turned out of walnut and has a headpiece with cast bronze Tarleton seals mounted on four sides. Crowning the headpiece is a three-dimensional, bronze-plated flame of knowledge, which sits above three polished bands of bronze, representing Tarleton’s past, present and future.

ACADEMIC

The distinctive dress associated with academic processions and convocations dates from the Middle Ages when students of the oldest European and English universities wore woolen and fur garments for warmth in drafty stone buildings. Most of the scholars were clerics in holy orders, and they wore cloaks with hoods that could be pulled up to cover their tonsured heads. Robes were adopted from both ecclesiastical and civilian sources. The hood was selected by these early scholars as an article of apparel to distinguish the various university degrees by its color, trimming or binding.

The use of academic dress in the United States has been continuous since Colonial days. However, a uniform system was adopted by most institutions of higher learning near the end of the 19th century when the Intercollegiate Commission met in New York. This code of dress has become standard for most colleges and universities.

In the United States, black is the traditional color for academic gowns, although some institutions authorize holders of their doctorates to wear the colors of the institution. The bachelor’s robe is black with long pointed sleeves. The master’s is black with oblong sleeves which are closed; the arm comes through a slit in the sleeve. The doctor’s robe has long full sleeves, velvet facing on the front and at the neck, and three velvet bars across each of the sleeves. The velvet in the doctor’s robe may be black, or it may be the color that symbolizes the degree held.

The usual cap, proper for all degrees, is the black mortarboard, although some colleges use the beret. Tassels, usually black, are worn over the left front quarter of the cap. Holders of the doctorate may wear tassels of gold thread.

The most distinctive feature of American academic dress is the hood, which indicates by its color and design its wearer’s degree and the institution by which the degree was conferred. Hoods vary in length according to the degree. The bachelor’s hood (which is used at some institutions) is about three feet long, and that of the master’s degree is slightly longer, while the doctoral hood is long and colorful with broad panels. The hood is lined with the color of the college or university granting the degree. It is faced with a color indicating the subject of specialization. A partial list of colors associated with the various disciplines is as follows:

Providing an innovative and transformative educational experience, TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY, a member of The Texas A&M University System since 1917, offers 84 undergraduate, 38 graduate and three doctorate degree options. Students can study in one of seven colleges — Agriculture and Natural Resources, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Liberal and Fine Arts, and Science and Mathematics.

Founded in 1899 as John Tarleton College, the university is the ideal model of size and scope. Tarleton State’s cutting-edge academic facilities and faculty with extensive professional and industry experience prepare students for today’s market and careers yet imagined.

Classes are available at the home campus in Stephenville — an hour southwest of Fort Worth — and in Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan, and online. Tarleton State boasts five schools — the School of Behavioral Sciences, the School of Health and Clinical Professions, the School of Nursing, the School of Kinesiology and the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Public Administration. The university serves nearly 17,000 students from all parts of Texas, 48 states, and almost four dozen countries.

Tarleton State’s move to NCAA Division I as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, construction of a second building on the Fort Worth campus and an $80 million Health Professions Building in Stephenville are positioning the institution as the premier comprehensive public university in enrollment, research, and national prominence in the nation.

Additionally, a new $10 million Research and Economic Development Building, at U.S. Highway 281 and East Lingleville Road, will strengthen faculty-led student research and spur regional growth and job creation.

Tarleton State University, an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer and Educator, is committed to excellence through diversity.

Oh! Our hearts with joy are thrilling when the Tarleton Colors wave, And our Spirits rise with rapture when the Tarleton sons are brave; Fight for Victory, Fight for Honor, And success will crown the fight; ALL HAIL the proud defenders of the Purple and the White!

—TARLETON

COLOR SONG

Oh!
