TARLETON SOFTBALL HISTORY
2
T
he Tarleton Softball program has been nothing short of an instant success since its inaugural season in 1996. Tarleton State Softball is the only program at the university that is solely an NCAA program, making its debut in Stephenville in 1996 – just one year after Tarleton State made the leap from NAIA to NCAA Division II – and recording its first winning season in just the third year of existence. After a 14-20 season in the debut season of 1996 under head coach Julie Garcia, the program underwent a coaching change that would ultimately pay big dividends. Julie Mata, a basketball star for the Tarleton State TexAnns and a native of Stephenville, was handed the reigns to the program in June of 1996 and never looked back. In just her second season at the helm, Mata led Tarleton to its first 30-win season with a record of 35-14-1 and qualified for her first Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament. The TexAnns were the LSC South Division Champions and Mata was named the 1998 LSC South Division Coach of the Year, establishing herself as a premier coach in one of the nation’s most elite softball conferences. The 1998 season marked the first of four consecutive trips to the LSC Tournament and the first of three straight division
championships for the school’s newest program, and after a tough 2002 campaign, Mata’s TexAnns returned to power with two of the best season’s in school history. Led by All-American Monica Garza and 2003 LSC Pitcher of the Year Carla Geeslin, Tarleton State won 41 games in the 2003 campaign en route to another division championship, LSC tournament appearance and the school’s first trip to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament. Garza led the TexAnns back to the regional tournament in 2004 after another 30-win season. Over the back-to-back regional tournament seasons, Tarleton amassed 71 wins and 37 losses for a winning percentage of .657 while winning 26 of their 36 LSC games over those two seasons. Garza’s stellar two-year career, in which she hit .423 with 134 hits, 107 RBIs, 31 doubles and a .767 slugging percentage, eventually landed her in the Tarleton Athletics Hall of Fame. After a two-year hiatus, Tarleton returned to the NCAA tournament with a 36-20 season in 2007 for the TexAnns’ third trip in the school’s history. Mata and the TexAnns recorded the program’s 500th all-time win on April 26, 2013 with a 9-4 win over Incarnate Word and the head coach won her 500th game at the helm of the program the following season with an 8-0 victory over Eastern New

TEXANN SOFTBALL HISTORY
STEPHENVILLE – An hour-long power outage waved across Stephenville around mid-afternoon Friday, affecting everything in the area except the Tarleton State offense. The TexAnns outslugged Eastern New Mexico 18-2 over 11 innings to sweep Friday’s doubleheader and give Tarleton head coach Julie Mata her 500th all-time victory at the helm of the TexAnn Softball program.
The TexAnns have been to 14 Lone Star Conference Championship Tournaments, which is the most appearances by a conference school.
Mexico. In 2015, Tarleton State switched gears and went into a rebuilding mode with only four returning starters and a few more returning letterwinners but the young group of TexAnns wasted no time in bringing back the championship culture of Tarleton Softball. The TexAnns battled to a third-place finish in the conference to earn their 14th trip to the league’s postseason tournament. Following a semifinal exit, the TexAnns earned their fourth trip to the NCAA postseason as the No. 8 seed in the South Central region and were sent to Canyon to play the region’s top-seed and nation’s No. 3-ranked team, West Texas A&M. Tarleton defeated the Lady Buffs by the score of 2-1 with Shelby Hedrick sealing the win with a strikeout of the Lady Buff cleanup hitter to put Tarleton in the Region 1 bracket driver’s seat. After a win against Cameron in the second round sent Tarleton to championship Sunday of the first regional weekend, Hedrick came up big at the plate with a six-RBI performance against the Aggies - including the walk-off RBI single to send the TexAnns to their first-ever Super Regional Series. Tarleton fell to St. Mary’s in San Antonio in the supers. With a history of nothing but success, Tarleton State Softball looks to continue its dominance in 2016 and for years to come.

GAME 1: TARLETON 10, EASTERN NEW MEXICO 2 (6) In the first game, Kelsey Latta blasted a walk-off three-run homer to deep left center to put the TexAnns at the eight-run rule and end the game after just 5.2 innings in a 10-2 Tarleton win. Tarleton got the scoring under way in the bottom of the first when Amber Clifford scored on a wild pitch and tacked on another in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to center from Katelyn Conlee to bring home Mikayla Stogsdill for a 2-0 lead after three. Eastern New Mexico answered right back in the fourth and fifth innings with solo runs in each frame to knot the score at 2-2. In the fifth inning, Tarleton pulled away when Taylor Wells and Conlee went for back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame and bring home a run. The TexAnns added three more on RBI singles from Kendra Mendoza and Stogsdill and an RBI fielder’s choice from Melody Mayse. In the top of the sixth, the power went out for everyone but the TexAnn offense as Tarleton powered home four more runs to end the game early. With runners on second and third and one out, Mendoza singled home Clifford from third for a 7-2 lead before Latta ended the game with her threerun bomb just under the Tarleton scoreboard in left center to plate Wells, Mendoza and herself.

GAME2: TARLETON 8, EASTERN NEW MEXICO 0 (5) In the nightcap, Brenna Hennan tossed a complete game shutout en route to handing Mata career win 500 with an 8-0 blanking of Eastern New Mexico. Hennan was also the winning pitcher last season and was the winning pitcher when Tarleton won its 500th game as an NCAA program – defeating Incarnate Word 9-4 on April 26, 2013. The TexAnns kept the good times rolling by jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead on a 2-RBI double by Conlee to bring home Mayse and Wells with two outs. After Hennan danced out of danger in the second with bases loaded and one out, Tarleton added another run in the second on an RBI single from Stogsdill. An inning later, Mendoza broke out the big bat with her teamleading fifth home run of the season – a two-run shot to put Tarleton up 5-0. Tarleton tacked on two more in the fourth with an RBI single from Clifford and an RBI double from Mendoza before Clifford sent everyone home happy in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to deep center to plate Latta for the gamewinner. Hennan pitched five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk with four strikeouts for her sixth win of the season.
