Taroona had a rare snowfall to sea level this past winter; enough to bring Hobart to a standstill for the morning – and close schools for the day. Many of you will have enjoyed the novelty of the event with early morning backyard snow play or maybe an iced coffee?! But thankfully after such a long, cold and snowy winter, spring is here!

As usual there is a lot happening in Taroona as you will read in this spring issue of the Taroona News.

The TCA has lodged a representation to a planning application for 8 units (3 storeys) at 180 Channel Highway. It seeks a relaxation of the maximum building height by approximately 20%. We have Snow on a log at Taroona beach concerns regarding the overall impact on the local amenity, loss of solar access and the precedent that this could establish along the highway in future. Other significant issues of concern to neighbouring residents include the increased impact of parking on local residents and surrounding streets. The development will be considered by the Council’s Planning Committee on 12 October.

Save the date for the biennial Taroona Seaside Festival on Saturday, 21 November – an event that supports our local primary school. This should not be missed. The TCA will be there exhibiting the beautiful Chiton rowing skiff and asking for your thoughts about a shed for Taroona.

The TCA and Taroona Volunteer Fire Brigade will be co-hosting an information session Bushfire Safety in Taroona on Saturday, 7 November at 2.00pm. If you’re interested in the workings of the TCA or want to contribute more to your local community, please come along before the session to the TCA’s AGM at 1.00pm.

We have a job opportunity for the position of treasurer. Tony Hughson, the TCA’s treasurer for the last 5 years is retiring from his role. He has done a sterling job. The position only requires 1 to 2 hours per week, if that. If this is your calling, please call Jill or Tony to find out more (see the back page for contact details).

Of sheds, boats and other things….

Community Shed The Taroona Community Association has recently discussed whether a Community Shed would be well supported in Taroona.

We agreed that it’s time to check with our community.

Many hands ...

Have you ever wondered how to build a wooden dinghy, or a harp or violin, how to make chutney, jams or pickles, or fix the toaster, tune your car, turn up a pepper grinder on a wood lathe, repair your kayak or make sausages? Imagine a big shed in Taroona, where all these things and so much more were possible, learning from fellow members of the Taroona community. There would be a big table (perfect for poker and the occasional curry night) and a coffee machine, names on mugs and all the equipment donated by members or funded by local government grants; a centre for our community where people can drop in to teach or learn or just share ideas. If you are interested, please let us know by email to damiandevlin@gmail.com and we will organize a meeting to discuss how to make it happen.

Community Emergency Management review This year, the Kingborough Council initiated a review of Community Emergency Management procedures, to identify weaknesses and improve services. In May and June, representatives of the Taroona community, including the TCA, provided input.

The results will soon be completed and more information will be published in the December newsletter. What is clear already is that

Taroona’s safety score needs serious attention, being only 53 out of 100. The major weakness is the single road, which is easily blocked by burning debris in a bushfire, so it is vital that we are all

well-informed about safety gathering points. Another important aspect is for all to identify potentially vulnerable

people (such as the elderly, the disabled, those without cars during the day) in their vicinity, and to be willing to assist in an emergency.

We encourage everyone to attend the presention by the Taroona Fire Brigade at the Community Hall, 2.00pm on the 7 November.

The Chiton With summer on the way, it will soon be time to dust off the rowing skiff and get back on the water. Damian has been negotiating with The Living Boat Trust to see if we can operate the good ship Chiton under their public liability insurance policy and we expect to have an agreement shortly that will provide cover for members of the Taroona Coastal Rowing Group for a modest fee. Our handbook and operating procedures booklet is also ready to trial with our group of skippers. The Living Boat Trust shed at Franklin is a wonderful community resource that includes a well-appointed kitchen and ample space for work on a variety of projects.

BHCA Update:

Construction of Bonnet Hill Safety Lanes Dept of State Growth (DSG) are currently undertaking a tender process with work to commence at the beginning of November.

The contract will initially be to construct a safety lane on the uphill sections of the Channel Highway from Proctors Road.

Due to climatic factors, road construction can only occur between October to April each year, so BHCA are now keen to be advised by the DSG as to how much will be completed during this summer.

The safety lanes will provide an extra 1.5m widening of the road shoulder on the uphill sections of the Channel Highway over Bonnet Hill and eventually on to Taroona. They will give all motorists extra space so, when completed, drivers will not need to cross over the centre line when passing slower moving cyclists.

BHCA will keep the community updated as to DSG plans and progress. BHCA are keen to remind all motorists that while construction is taking place some traffic delays will be necessary.

If you’re new to Taroona, appreciate the bushland and foreshore, and like volunteering for your local community, TEN is a great group to join! We’re one of 30 or more Kingborough Council’s bushcare/coastcare groups.

Walkabouts are free events held seasonally, organised and hosted by TEN, to promote Taroona’s extraordinary flora, fauna and people history.

– Host seasonal Walkabouts, led by local experts on a great variety of topics.

– Produce a variety of interpretive publications on habitat gardening, podcast trail and local native plants.

WORKING BEES FOR 2015 Everyone is welcome to join us from 10-12 noon (usually the 1st Sunday of the month). Everything provided, including a cuppa after. No experience necessary.

Come along and explore the hidden lives of some of the many insects, spiders and other creepy-crawlies that share our suburb with us. Just bring yourselves and if possible a collecting pot or two; and a camera for capturing those close encounters.

Taroona Scout Group: CUBOREE & POUCHES FOR ORPHANS Six of our Cubs, Scout Patrol Leaders, Cub leaders and parents had a great weekend at the 23rd Tasmanian Cuboree.

The Cuboree is a weekend camp for Cub Scouts held every three years. The theme for the 2015 Cuboree was “Keep Calm & Go Cubbing”. Along with 400 other Cubs and 200 parents they enjoyed a really exciting weekend of activities, mental and physical exertion, excursions, queuing, and camping – all in brilliant clear Tasmanian spring weather.

The Scouts have completed a project for Bonorong wildlife park.

Last year, owner Greg Irons visited the Scouts and spoke to them about native animals and rescuing injured or orphaned joeys. In return the Scouts have made up five rescue kits to carry in their cars should they come across an injured or orphaned animal. The Scouts also had a sewing night and and made sixteen pouches for foster carers to use. During a visit to Bonorong they presented the keepers with the pouches. By the time they left Bonorong there had already been five orphans or injured animals come through that day and their pouches were already in use.

Continuing their centenary of Anzac Day work the Scouts embarked on “interviews with a digger.” Members of the Taroona Ex-services Club volunteered to be interviewed by the Scouts – talking about their lives, growing up, life as a child in war time, active service, wives and widows. The kids have embraced this project and are bidding for the chance to do the next interview.

Cubs Thomas, Hal, Nicholas, James, Anders and Sebastian, along with leaders and parent helper, at the 23rd Tasmanian Cuboree.. provided the geotechnical assessment and from Interiors Building Design’s Katree Wilson who prepared drawings and Council approval documentation.

The existing 47 year old hall was built following the destruction of the old hall during the 1967 bush fires. If you have a photo of the old hall that was destroyed we would love to hear from you.

Spring is well progressed and we again plan to collect and sell sheep manure. Please look out for the sale to be held at the Grange corner.

Over the weekend of 19th & 20th September, two patrols competed in the Kingborough district camp. It was a lightweight weekend using packs, hike stoves and tents. The Scouts completed point to point exercises using UHF radios, GPS and compass bearings. They also faced camp craft challenges such as first aid, knotting, history, and were assessed on food preparing and meals. In the evening they enjoyed games in the dark and an enormous camp fire.

The Taroona venturers have had an active term including a night trip to Mt Wellington, a glow party night with other units, night photograph competition in the city with a prize for the most unusual place to find a minion , and an interesting visit to the youth buddy program run by Vinnies. We are planning to run a BBQ for Alzheimer’s Australia in the holidays at the Memory Walk. Other venturers are also taking part in Night against Poverty sleep out and another also took part in at statewide Leadership course in September.

You may have seen progress by Action Builders on the garage extension at the Scout hall. The extension will provide very much easier access to store our trailers and water craft and free up an area to provide more flexibility for youth training exercises. The extension is possible due to a generous grant of $40,488 from the Tasmanian Community Fund that represents the majority funding of the nearly $52,000 project. In addition we received great support from Kingborough Council with planning and building applications, from Rock Solid Geotechnics’ Peter Hofto who

The bushfire season is upon us. In fact total fire bans have already been declared this season. This time last year several vegetation fires broke out in the south east of Tasmania, with crews from Taroona attending one that threatened homes in the Albion Heights area.

Taroona and the surrounding area is very bushfire prone.

Preparation is the key to surviving a bush fire. That preparation should start now. All residents need a bush fire plan. Basically that plan needs to start with a decision whether in the event your home is threatened by bush fire you will leave or stay and try defend it.

If you decide to leave you must leave early. Leaving when a fire is about to hit is extremely dangerous. Roads are often impassable due to smoke, fallen trees and power lines. Experience shows people are likely to be killed or injured trying to flee a fire at the last minute. Leaving early, many hours before the fire is likely to approach, means you avoid that danger.

Nearby Safer Places A nearby safer place is somewhere close by you should be able to reach quickly and safely and that gives shelter from radiant heat. They are a last resort, not your only option.

Tasmania Fire Service has identified some nearby safer places in this area: • Kelvedon Oval, Nubeena Crescent, (Taroona South) • Taroona High School Oval, 104 Channel Highway, (Taroona North) • Alexandra Battery Park, 629 Sandy Bay Road, (Lower Sandy Bay)

A good deal of community fire protection planning has been undertaken by the TFS in the last few years. The Community Bushfire Protection Plans for Taroona and Bonnet Hill are available at www.fire.tas.gov.au/Show?pageId=communityProtection PlanningProjectPublic.

The plans are designed to help you develop your own Bushfire Survival plans. Thus if your plan is to stay and defend your property then you must read the Community Bushfire Protection Plan that applies to where you live.

Remember the best plan is to leave early, many hours before any fire actually threatens your home.

Taroona Football Club News The 2015 football season wound up recently with all the Taroona senior and youth teams performing strongly across all competitions.

The club dinner and youth presentation evenings are planned and will be well attended given the presale of tickets. Thanks to the Derwent Sailing Squadron for providing the venue for the senior dinner and to the Taroona Lounge Bar for supporting our youth presentation evening.

Planning for 2016 has commenced and coaches will be in place and announced shortly at <www.taroonafc.org.au>.

We hope that we can commence the youth training earlier than normal and have the youth teams playing practice matches by late February early March 2016.

The start of our facilities upgrade has started with the Kingborough Council working on the surface at Kelvedon Park and the new spectator stands and the new team dugouts are under construction. The youth training facility is also underway with the lighting and ground resurfacing at the high school.

This will be the start of a well overdue increase in the standard of spectator and playing comfort which we hope will translate into bigger crowds to matches and better performances from our talented teams.

We have more youth clinics and skills programs commencing in October and again expect a range of 9-14 year olds to attend and enjoy the football learning environment provided.

These clinics are a wonderful way to engage enthusiastic youngsters in our game and encourage them to be active.

She did have the wonderful experience of being able to play with her two daughters Josie and Emma before she hung up the boots. Karen is another fine example of our people but unquestionably a wonderful player, sportsperson, club and community member.

Thanks for your contribution Karen, and I am sure that Josie and Emma will continue to grace the pitch with great distinction, as you have done, long into the future. It is indeed a fantastic legacy.

Taroona High School News THS Director of Music and Head of the Arts, Glenn Schultz, has been named a finalist for Teacher of the Year – Secondary in the 2015 Department of Education Awards for Excellence.

Glenn runs the school music program – a program widely acknowledged to be one of the best general high school music programs in Australia. In Grade 7, every student belongs to a concert band, and older grades boast concert and stage bands, as well as instrumental ensembles. Over 500 instruments come in and out of the music building every day!

As testament to the standard of their performances, THS bands and ensembles cleaned up in most of the categories they entered in the recent Clarence Eisteddfod.

Taroona Gardening Forum The Taroona Gardening Forum meets at 7:30pm on the first Wednesday of each month (except in January and July) at the Uniting Church Hall, 1 Taroona Crescent, Taroona.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th November.

We share knowledge about plants, soils and gardening, regularly have guest speakers or presentations, and usually have plants or gardening items for sale. Highlights of the year are the organised garden visits and trips and July and December lunches.

The monthly carving workshops at the Taroona Scout Hall continue to the great enjoyment of all participants. The stone carving theme has now expanded to include wood as well.
