The David Hockney SUMO COLLECTOR’S EDITIONS
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test — Art Edition by Lawrence Schiller
COLLECTOR’S EDITIONS
“. . . you will own a piece of art history.” Quintessentially on SUMO by Helmut Newton
“TASCHEN books are almost designed to be collectible. It’s very common for them to gain value almost instantly.” AbeBooks, the world’s most popular platform for antiquarian books
“If you decide to invest, choose appreciating assets and global heritage value.” on TASCHEN Collector’s Editions
SOLD OUT It is what it is, but we do on rare occasions have copies in mint condition returned, so check with your TASCHEN store or ask at collectors@taschen.com just in case.
FEW LEFT Still available, but is most likely not in stock anymore in each TASCHEN store. We expect the title to be sold out in the near future. APs Artist’s proof copies are made for artists, friends, contributors and in-house TASCHEN use. They are generally not for sale but exceptions can be made for a variety of reasons. PRICES All prices correct as of December 2016 and may change without prior notice. Please check taschen.com for the latest status. For sold out titles, we list prices according to the last copy sold by TASCHEN, which might be less than current market value.
SUMO SIZE
The mighty giants of our program tower at 70 cm / 27.6 in. or by 50 x 50 cm / 20 x 20 in. square.
BABY
SUMO A SUMO after taxes: 50 cm / 20 in. tall.
XXL Not far behind their BABY SUMO cousins, XXL books stand at a minimum of 40 cm / 15.7 in. tall or wide.
XL A little more compact, XL books are at least 35 cm / 13.8 in. tall or wide.
A FEW WORDS OF TASCHEN WISDOM Please treat your book kindly. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and humidity and do not display open books for an extended period of time. The condition of a book is integral to its value and prices for mint copies can far exceed those for copies in good or fair condition. Books with vintage TASCHEN casing can also achieve a significantly higher sum at resale, so keep the original presentation packaging.

“At a time when the book publishing world is faltering and the old powerhouses are going digital, Taschen is running in the opposite direction. The 35-year-old company is growing, and even accelerating the production of lush print volumes, many of them special editions that include original works of art. It has an old-world feel, closer to an 18th-century bookmaking collective than a worldwide publishing empire.

David Hockney SUMO — Edition of 10,000
“A retrospective of 60 years of Hockney’s work… He says this book is what he wants to be remembered by.”
The
David Hockney SUMO Back in the late 1990s, when Helmut Newton and Benedikt Taschen were working on the legendary SUMO in Los Angeles, the idea arose to one day create a SUMO together with David Hockney. “How great would it be to have such a book in the same scope and detail in glorious color about Hockney, the greatest painter alive?” Benedikt thought. “Imagine someone did this back in the day, with one of the Modern Art masters like Matisse, Picasso or Dalí. And since David lives next door in the Hollywood Hills, I must grab this historic chance!”
David Hockney and Benedikt Taschen at Hockney’s studio
This dream has finally come true: A Bigger Book brings a spectacular overview of more than 60 years of Hockney’s incredible work. As each page unfurls in a blaze of blues, pinks, greens, and oranges, we are spellbound both by the artist’s vibrancy as a colorist and his extraordinary sense of the conditions of the world that surrounds us. Through Hockney’s restless interrogation of perception and representation, we see the exquisite sparkle of a turquoise Los Angeles pool, witness the mellow sheen of light on a muddy Yorkshire puddle, and stand beneath the rustic majesty of Bigger Trees near Warter. These major paintings are joined by the artist’s drawings, photo-composites, multi-perspective collages, stage designs, multi-camera video works, and iPad drawings, each a panoply of looking and showing in different styles and media. Presented on a bookstand designed by Marc Newson, A Bigger Book is an artistic object itself, perfect for studying Hockney’s art in every detail, in every stroke of the brush, and perfect for living with the works of one of the most popular and versatile painters of our time.
David Hockney signing one of the 10,000 copies of his SUMO
The TASCHEN SUMO — A short history on a big book We cannot take credit for inventing the folio book, or as we like to call it, the SUMO. But thank heavens (and Helmut Newton) we were able to make a modern success story by reintroducing this rare species that has been known to bibliophiles for well over 500 years. Epic in scale, a TASCHEN SUMO creates a beautifully presented, private exhibition for art collectors and bookworms.
SUMO copy number 1 is world record holder for the most expensive book published in the 20th century, selling in 2001 for $304,000. Originally priced at $1,500, copies of the sold out SUMO today fetch up to $20,000.

Our publishing history with HR Giger goes back to the mid-1980s. Project work for this monograph dates back 10 years and included close curatorial and design collaboration with Hansruedi, as well as new photography of leading artworks held in private collections all over the globe. Due to his untimely death in 2014, Giger was unable to witness the final printing and binding of his opus magnum, but it stands in his memory as testimony to his prolific output and extraordinary vision.
