Camp Philosophy Above all else, camp is about fun. Summer provides you the opportunity to try new things and challenge yourself. It is also a chance to become part of our community that is built upon the following cornerstones: RE SPEC T How can you contribute positively to the community as a whole? It all starts with treating everyone with respect, or how you’d like to be treated. C O M M U NI TY You know there’s no “I” in team, right? Well, there isn’t one in camp either. We’re all in this together from Camp Director Pardo to the counselors to the older kids, all the way down to you sixes and sevens. When we work together, we learn from each other, and that’s where we find those friendships that endure. C A RI NG Looking out for one another is the right way to live! Tending to others in our community builds lasting friendships and shows us that what goes around comes around. G RO WTH So much time in our everyday lives is scheduled into routines of school and activities, but summer should be the time for growth. Explore, find wonder in new people and the amazing marine settings here at TASP. Don’t worry about making mistakes, just give something new an honest try. Your “camp family” will be here to guide you or pick you up if you fall. C O NNE C TI O NS How does someone from halfway around the world joke with someone who lives just down the block from Tabor’s campus? During the summer months, it is all about discovering where other campers are from, how they live, and what makes them laugh out loud. After six weeks you realize how small the world is and how much we have in common. J O Y When the other values of our community are embraced and you find pleasure seeing a sunset or laughing around the dinner table, that warm feeling of satisfaction and happiness speaks to you all day long.

Program Options 6 & 7-year-old Program Fun and teamwork are the wind in the sails of TASP’s program for you “Sixes & Sevens.” In the mornings, our counselors meet you at the Tabor Oval and lead various activities. To balance the heat of energetic outdoor play, you’ll spend some time in air-conditioned comfort having fun with language, drama, and art. You’ll finish up the morning with a crafts-making session before pick-up at 1:00. (Space is limited to 30 campers, so apply early!)

Day Program The heart of TASP’s community is you — the kids. From distant countries and from down the street, around 580 children call Tabor their home-away-from-home in the summer. Both residential and day campers share the fun.

4

About 210 day campers invade Tabor’s Summer Program every morning. First, you will check in with your day group counselor before heading to activities. Many day campers come to think of their advisors as big brothers or sisters; they’ll be the first and last instructors you’ll see each day. Lunch with friends at Tabor’s dining hall, then join our intra-program teams — Port (red) and Starboard (green) — for fun competitions. At the day’s close, you will check out with your advisor.

Highlights Please check out our full catalog of activities on our website at taboracademy.org/summer

SAILING NOVICE SAILING

At TASP, you will play, swim, act, create, and sail throughout Tabor’s 85-acre campus and Sippican Harbor. Our tennis courts, track, and seven playing fields — including our brand new turf facilities—invite you to play sports and games, and our waterfront facilities rival those of most universities and yacht clubs. Our sailing docks are literally in our back yard. You may also take advantage of our state-of-the art Athletic Center, home to international squash courts, a multipurpose gym, fitness and weight rooms, and more. Even the rainiest of days cannot dampen your fun.

Activities 6

Sippican Harbor is one of the South Coast’s premier sailing venues, home to both the Beverly Yacht Club and Tabor Academy’s storied sailing team. Whether you are an absolute beginner or more experienced, our certified instructors will teach you to harness the wind, master the various points of sail, and explore local islands and coves. (TASP provides 12 Capris, 9 Vanguard Trainer Prams, and 8 Sunfish for the novice levels.) ADVANCED SAILING

Are you looking to sharpen your racing skills? If so, then make sure to try out for our advanced sailing class. Those who qualify by passing our initial skills evaluation will race in Tabor’s fleet of 6 collegiate 420s. You will learn tactics, strategy, increase your boat speed, and compete against other camps and yacht clubs in the region. (Space is limited.)

LAND SPORTS Hone your skills in sports that you already know and love like basketball, baseball, and soccer or try something new. You can learn to huck the disc in ultimate frisbee, develop your forehand slam in tennis, or master a quick-stick in lacrosse.

ARTS AND CRAFTS All sorts of visual arts, clay, drama, and crafts are available to satisfy your creative cravings. If you’re 13 or older, you may also want to try out “Pyrography”—writing with fire!

Enrichment Courses Camp is camp and school is school, and never the twain should meet. That said, sometimes you want a little downtime in the summer — a cool shady space to work on a creative writing project or learn about fun science like rocketry. Our enrichment classes are not about grades but all about allowing you to explore your interests. You’ll take advantage of Tabor Academy’s state of the art facilities in the new Science and Math Wing, the Braitmeyer Art Center, and the Marine and Nautical Science Center. You will create your daily schedule by picking activities, each of which is carefully supervised by our trained instructional staff. You will learn the basics, hone your skills, and even compete against your peers.

Residential Program Most kids have to say good-bye to their friends around dinner time, but not TASP campers. Imagine hanging with your friends 24/7. Our 120 boarders live in dorms under the supervision and care of four well-trained staff members per house. In groups of up to 18, you will share experiences and cultures while learning the life skills of community living. Tabor offers three options for the residential program; you can board for one week, three weeks, or six weeks. There’s no better way to fully experience Tabor summer than staying the full six weeks, though. As “Full-Timers,” you enjoy total immersion; you won’t miss a thing. Each weekend activity is different, and there’s even a special trip just for your group that takes place between the Three-Week programs. Full-Timers often develop the deepest friendships, too, as you’re here long enough to really connect with other campers. Come back year after year and pick up your friendships where you left off. Since you’re living with kids from all over the country and the world, Full-Timers sometimes even arrange visits during the off season — imagine your summer program leading to shared ski vacations in Europe or adventures in Asia. Any way you cut it, Full-Timers’ experiences are full of opportunities. Of course, Three-Week boarders also enjoy rich residential life here at Tabor, but it’s a little like ice cream — wouldn’t you rather have an entire sundae than just one scoop? New campers who are uncertain about boarding but willing to give it a whirl, we offer a One-Week test-run. You can board beginning either the Sunday before Week 1 or Week 4 and stay until the following Monday. Space is limited, but if you decide to stay for the remaining two weeks of your session, you’re welcome to stay aboard!

“The enthusiasm and energy of the counselors, the creativity and competence of the activity instruction, and the general fun spirit were all perfect for them. Thanks so much for all you do to make camp great!” F ROM A PA RENT

RESIDENTIAL EVENINGS When the sun begins to set, TASP’s team colors rise as the campus erupts in cheering for intra-program teams. The Admiral, one of our spirited counselors, conducts the evening competitions, where the Port and Starboard teams battle for boasting rights. Once picked, many have said, “Once a Port, always a Port; once a Starboard, always a Starboard!” Though games and competitions are lots of fun, counselors will offer choices, so you can mix up your activities. There could be arts/crafts offerings, mystery trips, or other social events. On Fridays, kick off your flip-flops and dance the night away. We even have dorm nights, where you’ll kick it in your common rooms with friends and counselors.

WEEKEND LIFE Saturdays provide opportunities to try something different as counselors offer a wide variety of activities, including such subjects as dancing and self-defense. You will also experience our traditions of Summerfest, the lip-synch contest, and TASP Olympics. On Sundays, you will explore New England. Past trips have included Martha’s Vineyard, Six Flags, Boston Science Museum, New England Revolution soccer games, Newport’s mansion tours, and many others.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING PROGRAM Ready to lead? The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is the opportunity for veteran campers to broaden their TASP experience. The first year is open to you after you’ve completed your sophomore year in high school. However, second year CIT’s will be selected to return by invitation only. Here’s a great opportunity for you to develop leadership skills and to learn if you have what it takes to grow into a full-time counselor.

While our full catalog is available online at taboracademy.org/summer, some of our unique offerings include:

THE OCEANS PROGRAM Tabor Academy is called “the school by the sea” for a number of reasons. First is the obvious – the waves of Sippican harbor lap the shores of campus. Second is our commitment to the study of marine science and the oceans. Our state-of-the-art Mann Center is so close to the water, it was designed to allow a hurricane’s storm surge to wash right through. If you’re into exploring the ocean’s plants and animals, these activities are for you. We offer 6 different classes designed for all ages of campers from our introductory “Coastal Critters” to independent studies. You may go on whale watches, visit the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), or work in our saltwater tanks.

ECLECTIC COURSES You won’t find these classes at school! Here, you’ll have the chance to delve into such subjects as codebreaking, magazine publication, graphic novels (comic books!), movie making, military history, photography, and the computer programming language of “scratch.”

In addition to enrichment classes, we recognize that some of you need some time to work on language and testing skills. To that end, we offer more traditional classes in English as a Second Language (ESL) and SSAT prep.
