New Technology Introduced on Campus
Efficient upgrades help to improve life in the dorms and in facilities throughout the school by Jack Gordon and Karen Morahan Another influential update is that of the sign out system. In order to sign out for weekends and breaks, students typically have to go to the Study Center in the administration wing to use the school’s computers. Now, a web-based sign-out system is in the works in order to make the process easier. This change will help students sign out more promptly and easily. This year, Tabor Bucks has been a successful change, allowing students to swipe their prox cards to pay for things on campus. Now, these are going to be used to pay for laundry so that students do not have to use quarters. Photo by Kayla Aimone ‘17
Faculty members are also benefiting from technological improvements. Now, the faculty has access to the Senior Systems Advantage Mobile App. With this new piece of technology on their smartphones, teachers can manage grades and attendance more quickly and without a computer.
Sterling Benkhart and Mrs. Sudduth use the new printer in the study center.
Recently, the Tabor community has been introduced to a number of changes, many of which involve technological updates. Under the leadership of new Informational Technology (IT) manager, Mr. Frey, many helpful upgrades in technology have and will be implemented this year around campus.
Residential Life is an important aspect of Tabor and is undergoing a few technological changes. In the common rooms and faculty apartments of the dormitories, expanded access to cable television through Comcast will be available. In addition, Internet access will be improved throughout campus, specifically in Lillard, Bushnell, and Baxter, creating what the IT department calls, a “Connected Campus.”
Additionally, printers are being updated. Due to some issues with the Canon printers, a careful selection process began in the IT department. They eventually settled on a deal with Xerox. This new system will bring many substantial differences when the printers are installed this February. The additions include eight color printers, the ability to scan into an email, stapling and hole punching, prox card recognition, and several other advanced functions. These new printers will make printing more secure and cost effective.
The IT department, which is upstairs in the math wing, has done an excellent job helping to improve systems around campus. Starting last month, the department welcomed a new member, Duane Martin, to the team. As technology changes, Tabor adapts their systems to be efficient and effective. The recently implemented changes have been very beneficial throughout the community and more changes are in the works to help make many tasks throughout campus easier and more efficient for students, faculty and staff.

Noyes and Sullivan created the club earlier this year and about 40 students signed up. As both seniors have been busy with the college process and senior fall, they have not held any events with the group yet. Now that everything is settling down, however, they plan to start doing random acts of kindness in February. Recently, a meeting was held with the group and many students contributed ideas that Noyes and Sullivan intend to spearhead soon. “We plan to start off with lots of free food, such as handing out free cookies, or putting candy in everyone’s mailboxes,” says Noyes. “From there we would love to start recognizing the birthdays of the dining hall and cleaning staff along with a teacher of the month.”
Noyes and Sullivan both believe that one does not need grand gestures to improve morale, but that small, seemingly random kind acts can make anyone’s day brighter. With big plans on the horizon, the Tabor community looks forward to seeing where this club can go.

The Many Definitions of a Relationship
Mrs. Millette puts examples of healthy relationships on display by Lili Whitelaw On July 3, 2011, Lauren Dunne Astley died at the hands of her former boyfriend after their breakup. To honor their daughter, her parents, Malcolm and Mary Astley, began the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund. This is a fund that provides small grants to people who have project ideas to endorse healthy relationships with the goal of preventing another tragedy like Lauren’s. For a long time, Lauren Millette has had the idea of creating a project of her own to celebrate healthy relationship dynamics on campus and recently created a video. Millette believes that people often forget the many positive role models of healthy relationships that exist throughout campus, such as friendships, roommates, teammates, family relationships and romantic relationships. This project highlights the positive role models we have on campus so that if one realizes that they are in an unhealthy relationship, there will be visible examples of role models that can demonstrate a positive one.
Millette’s Healthy Relationship Video features pictures of statements written on whiteboards that each person in a relationship wrote to share with their partner. Mrs. Millette caught the emotion that was expressed through individual statements and stated that the vibe felt “amazing.” She hopes that this video will provide those struggling in unhealthy relationships with an example of people who support each other and have healthy relationships. This will help others to understand what healthy relationships are made of and that they exist in a number of forms. Malcolm Astley spoke about his daughter, the fund, and the concept of dealing with grief. Mrs. Millette timed her video to go along with Astley’s speech to provide examples of healthy relationships. Mrs. Millette hopes to continue discussion about healthy relationships now that this theme has been brought to the attention of the community.

I don’t think that it is necessarily wrong to forgive someone who has wronged you. But, I think you should only do so if you truly have let go of your resentment and have come to terms with what happened. I don’t think it is fair to yourself to do this just because you’re bored. TIS THE month o Valentine’s Day Do’s and Don’ts DON’T complain about being a single on Valentine’s day… plenty of us are; you are not alone in this. DON’T forget to get a gift for your significant other. Even if he/she says you don’t have to get them anything… a note is always nice (and easy). DON’T wear all black to boycott. Just don’t be that kid... DON’T bring in personalized candy cards from Walmart for your whole class. While it’s sweet, that tradition is best left in elementary school. DON’T sulk and look at old photos of your ex.
DO make cards for your friends and family. The day isn’t only about romance; it’s about all kinds of love. DO buy one of Jason Ma’s hand-made roses. As he advertises, they will never die and so they make a great gift for your special someone. DO wear red, hearts, and all things festive. Valentine’s Day is a holiday…live it up. DO get candy from the fundraiser table as a gift to support a good cause and to brighten your friend’s day! DO spend the day creating new memories with your friends that you love.
Some Dr. Mehegan Wisdom: Many heard Dr. Mehegan’s speech last month and had strong reactions to it, one person remarked, “If there was one thing that I thought Tabor student’s needed to hear, that was it.” With Dr. Mehegan’s permission, we have elected to put together a sparknotes version of it to keep in mind on Valentine’s Day. Theorem 1: You cannot cheat. Corollary 1: You cannot be cheated on. Corollary 2: Once a cheater always a cheater. Corollary 3: Flirting gives the wrong impression.
Theorem 2: Trust is essential. Corollary 1: Accepting yourself and not trying to be someone else are quick ways to develop trust. Theorem 3: Avoid the green monster: jealousy.
Creative Gift Ideas
by Wendy Liu
1) Fill a mason jar with folded colorful stars, Silvershell beach sand and shells, and small tree sticks. A beautiful homemade gift is a guaranteed hit. 2) Poke-and-Win Game – This is great for a group of friends or young relatives - Grab an opened cardboard box and divide it into sections with other cardboard pieces. - Put gifts in each of the pieces (ex. Sweet notes, jokes, photos, food, your secret dining hall hacks) - Cover the entire box with a large piece of paper and draw to indicate where each individual box is. 3) In need of revenge? Gather a bag of all your useless three-hole-punch circle pieces or go to anonymousglitter. com and send your enemy a glitter bomb. 4) For your lazy friend – a small cactus only needs to be watered monthly so they will maintain this nice dorm decoration easily. 5) Embossed flowers or leaves - It’s easier to give fresh flowers in the fall and spring so now in this frigid winter, you can press the flowers or leaves and make them into bookmarks or decorations.
Creative Date in Marion... by Ollie Sughrue Winter is a time of frigid endurance but also a time when we stoke the sparks of love, building simmering conflagrations. With relationships brewing, these are the times to act upon any of these innate compulsions. With these instinctive feelings acted upon, hopefully now is the time to find a proper amphitheater to further convey your raw emotions: a place for a good date. Doubtless, the Library and late night study sessions are viable options but this article explores unique settings for the most imaginative of romantics. For the Naturalist in your life: Marion’s bleak and barren self in a deep hibernation would provide the perfect romantic backdrop to impress your environmentally-aware date. The endlessly meandering trails of the picturesque Stone Estate are the pinnacle of Marion’s slow and empty beauty. Set deep in the heart of Marion, these paths provide a great place to earn a place deep in the heart of an earthy significant other. Out here, there is little evidence of humanity’s footprint. What better way to examine a naturalist’s natural feelings than surrounded by acres of untouched nature? For that special Athlete: Long heralded as the athletic hub of the East, Marion is a stellar setting for your favorite superb sportsman or woman. Indeed, with such a noted culture of competition and athleticism, Marion will easily entice the athlete in your life. First, surprise them with a trip to the Athletic thrift shop. Deck yourself out from head to toe so as to be properly outfitted to root your date on when the time comes. Next, go for a jog in the gelid countryside, perhaps down to the gates at Mooring Road or through the village. Finish with a Saturday night spent taking in some games in the Fish and, of course, a spin at Open Skate. For your dear Cosmopolitan: This small secluded seaside village, contrary to popular belief, offers excellent venues for shopping. The Village itself, just a pleasant walk down Front Street from most dorms, boasts several specialized stores. In one afternoon, a savvy shopper can procure a side of beef, two bestselling novels, life insurance, hand crafted jewelry, a post-modern furniture set, and an Impressionist painting- all within a four block radius. Surely even the most choosy of customers will be able to find something. For your Adventurist: Yes, Marion can feel miles from relevant and decades from interesting. However, with clever planning, even the most wild of people can find a suitably exciting date. This author recommends a kayak tour through the harbor (of course, once that is permitted). Exploring the nooks of our ancient anchorage is enthralling: there is much to see from Little Island to Hammets and Briggs Coves; from Black Point to Gravel Island there is something for any and all to enjoy. Naturally, this should culminate with a picnic at Meadow Island, a task inherently adventurous as the Island has the unfortunate tendency of occasionally disappearing with the tide for hours on end.

There’s always the option of boycotting Valentine’s Day, but if you want to have a little fun, here are some options on how to be extremely single on this god forsaken holiday. Most importantly, do not feel sorry for yourself. You have to love your single self. Think of all the reasons being single is awesome. (ex. More free time and you don’t have to buy someone gifts…) Think about how stupid it is to be involved in a Hallmark Holiday and laugh every time you see a loved one spend $1.26 on a card that they could have spent on Pringles at Target. You sure got them.
Keep you r chin up ! Candy go es on sale after Vale ntines da y!
Do NOT go on so You’ll be bomb cial media. pictures of cou arded by p gifts, and fancy les, cute dinners. Yuck.
Send yourself chocolate and flowers! Why not? Everyone loves some good Valentine’s day chocolate, and you can never go wrong with some good smelling flowers. Maybe send them with a blank card attached to give the gift a sense of mystery. The more single you are, the better.

The Genesis of Valentine’s Day How did this Hallmark Holiday come to be? by Caldwell Harden Although many may believe that Valentine’s Day was a holiday created by Hallmark executives looking to increase their sales, the holiday dates back to the fifth century and some believe that the holiday’s roots are in the Roman celebration of Lupercalia. There are several different explanations for Valentine’s Day, since there are three saints with the name Valentine (or a form of it), but the most commonly believed one involves a priest and prison. When Emperor Claudius II ruled, he believed that men were better soldiers if they lacked wives and children, thus he banned the institution of marriage. Saint Valentine witnessing this injustice and began to marry couples in secret; once Claudius found out he sentenced Valentine to death. Historians believe that the significance of February 14th is either the death or birth of Saint Valentine.
Since then, Valentine’s Day has come along way, now it is the second largest card sending holiday of the year with approximately 1 billion cards sent, including 140 million cards purchased and 85% of those are purchased by women. Written Valentine’s Day greetings date back to the 1400’s. Duke of Orleans Charles wrote the oldest surviving one to his wife, while he was imprisoned in 1415.
In the 1700’s people began exchanging gifts and cards with each other. The year of 1840 was the first time that cards were mass-produced. Over 50% of the cards are bought within six days of the holiday, showing that it’s a procrastinator’s holiday. Valentine’s Day is now celebrated in the United States, Canada, England, Mexico, France, and Australia.

World News Update: France in Crisis
Charlie Hebdo disaster leads to more chaos in France
by Denizalp Goktas
Twelve caricaturists were killed on January 7, 2015 by two Muslim extremists. In an attempt to escape from the police the following day, these extremists killed 5 more people. In the aftermath of this tragic event, France has experienced the biggest marches in its history. The peaceful protests were intended to defend freedom of speech in France and show national unity.
Charlie Hebdo is a satirical magazine. This is a weekly publication that has an anarcho-communist ideology (far left). The editors of the magazine were criticized in 2006 by Muslim communities for depicting their religious prophets in cartoons. Nonetheless, it was this year that extremists shook the world with their violent attack on the magazine. Since the attack, Europe has been facing a rise in “islamophobia.” In fact, shortly after in France, a Muslim man was killed by a Christian extremist who was yelling “filthy Muslim.” Europe is currently facing one of the biggest social issues of the 21st century.

Boys’ Varsity Hockey Continues Travis Roy Tradition
Seawolves work to raise money for a valuable cause and represent Tabor well by Bobby Balboni
Playing Division 1 New England Prep School hockey means that the Boys’ Ice Hockey Team has plenty of big games every year. But when schedules are released there is one game that everyone looks for: The Travis Roy Cup. The event is held in honor of alum and new Board of Trustees member, Travis Roy. After graduating in 1995 Roy went on to play hockey for a national powerhouse at Boston University. In his very first shift, Roy suffered a tragic vertebra injury that ended his career and left him as a paraplegic. But Roy’s injury has not been what has defined him. Instead he has gone on to start his own foundation, has helped write his own biography, and has led a fulfilling and inspirational life.
each player raises twenty four dollars for Roy’s charity because he wore that number during his tenure at BU. David Marshall ‘15 explains that, “The 24 in 24 fundraiser that we do allows us to give back to the Travis Roy foundation in a very simple way but the significance of the fundraiser has a much larger impact. The day has shown me the way that the community can come together in order to support such a valuable cause.”
The Travis Roy Cup is a yearly highlight for everyone in the Tabor community, but it is especially significant for those who get to take the ice in his honor. This will be Senior David Almeida’s third time and he explained that, “Sitting in the locker room before the game and listening to Travis speak to us is something I will never forget. This game is more than a hockey game. It is to remember a great player and an even better person for his impact on the community.”
Roy’s presence in the Tabor community has been a beacon of hope and inspiration for all of us, and the annual event gives us a chance to return the favor. Traditionally the hockey team has spearheaded the fundraising by initiating “24 in 24” where

Teammate Brett Dineen ’16 added that, “This day has always been one I have looked forward to over the years both as a player and as a fan. It is an incredible experience to play a game for this cause and it would be awesome to get the level of support from the rest of the school that we have over the years.”
The Travis Roy Cup is an annual tradition that Roy returns to campus for.
Is it Love or Just Information?
Don’t miss this year’s unique Winter Drama performance by Duhita Das This year’s Winter Blackbox Production, which is directed by Mr. Tyler, is called Love and Information and was written by Caryl Churchill. The play features a small cast of only three boys and six girls: Austin Franklin, Derek Huang, Lulu Russell, Matthew McFaul, Kristiana Sotiriou, Nathalie Cavallo, Boo Graham, Hye Rin Joo, and Hannah McGuire.
Love and Information is sure to be a unique experience for audience members and will be shown in the Will Parker Blackbox Theater February 26 to 28 at 7:00 PM. Remember to reserve seats at the switchboard!
Love and Information is not your average play given that there is no specific beginning, middle, or end. It is a series of short skits that show that we live in a world where our lives are completely and constantly flooded with all different kinds of information. Sometimes, it is difficult to sort out the good and bad information we receive and some of the hardest information to process is about love. The play has varying levels of structure, with different relationships in each scene. For example, in one of the dialogues, girl asks boy, “Do you love me?” and the boy simply responds with, “Don’t ask me that.”
Matthew McFaul and Boo Graham are in this year’s winter drama performance.
