Educational FINAL THESIS 2015
The goal of this educational facility is to inspire the community and encourage them to live a healthy life in mind and body. The main users of the facility are children and adolescence with learning disabilities. The idea was implemented from large and small motor skill games that make childern thrive to learn. This developed into a design resulting in interaction and engagement through play creating a visual journey of discovery through educational video game elements.

Cafe Workstation The focus of the main floor contains a three story slide and staircase, which demonstrate the connections through the facility. The purpose of this focal point is to gradually prompt children to get excited to go to the Learning Center on the third floor, this is accomplished through the progression of the stairs that lights up on each tread. The reward of the visiting the Learning center, is using the slide to go down to the main floor playground that is monitored by the front desk receptionist. Additionally, parents are welcomed to go down the slide.

PERSPECTIVES
Stair Niche These two views illustrate the connection of the stair niche and the slide, and the connection from the tutoring pods above to the workstations below.
8
Work Stations/Pod Connection The purpose of this design is to encourage the users to explore the entire facility, as the Learning center’s goal is to integrate main features that encourage learning and excitement amongst its users.
PERSPECTIVES
Play Cafe// Entrance Although there are multiple cafes around Berkeley Castle in Toronto, Play Café is original in that it diversely brings family, friends, and business/students together in the same space and instills excitement to use the space from its original functions. Play Café encourages visual/mental stimulation that supports the learning center. The suspending seating is inspired to enable children to swing at a minimum, to not create disruption or injuries. The central black chairs are for lounging.
Play Cafe// Back View The touch screens tables can be used for playing games or for business meetings, as it has a USB port installed, allowing uploading documents for display, letting the user carry less baggage when working. The colors utilized, were chosen to represent a tree house; the main materials are a vinyl black walnut and a custom vinyl graphic green print. Additionally, the swing chair emphases playing in a tree house from the suspension to be reinforced by a “tree.”

Thrive Lobby The Lobby provides an exciting first impression through a playful environment of geometric patterns. There is a bench provided for the waiting area, which is attached to the receptions desk. However, children typically become less stimulated and lose interest in the environment while ‘waiting,’ in order to overcome this, the digital pay room is provided for children who are waiting to be tested or children

Waiting//Digital Playroom this room was design for children to have mind stimulation and activity while waiting and also not to lose intrest from sitting and waitng for learning assistance

Independent Work Stations This view depicts the integration of the independent workstations, torturing pods, and the parent lounge. The suspended chairs provide the users with sound absorption as they are working, and dually provide a barrier from peripheral distractions as they are sitting in an oval form. The angled tables allow for independence as it only allows for one way seating. The tutoring pods allow for an independent workspace and dually create an engaging environment through the floating tree houses.
PERSPECTIVE
Parent Lounge/Resource The parent lounge is placed in a central area in order to enable children to continue to feel safe as the parents are just outside the testing area. Parent’s have access to keep track of their child’s progression at the learning center and learn about their child’s individual learning disability needs from the computers and tablets provided along with a charging station that will have a registered login system. Also seen in this view is the display board placed beside each testing room. The screens placed along the testing doors excites children as the receptionist sends a graphic to the screen with the child’s name. The purpose being it will enable children to feel welcomed and engaged with seeing their own personal name on objects. This encourages a positive environment and excites children upon first impression.
Fine Motor Skills Room The Fine motor skills room allows for creativity while practicing their motor skills. The white wall allows for paint to be applied and easily washed off. The colorful vertical strips have two functions: act as dividers for children painting space and the main feature is they scan the child’s art, as they are movable/dynamic. The scanners upload the children’s painting and are able to upload them digitally and print them off. This provides a sustainable feature, as less paper will be wasted. Elevation//Scanner Wall

concept was reflected in the research on IDEO. A corporate business requires many social gatherings, open space, good circulation and the aspect of working together in order to grow and attract more business. Social media can be defined as an interactive platform which individuals and communities create and share user-generated content. IDEO grows by everyone sharing their knowledge to create new ideas. In the plan, the main focus was connection and the use of pop ups. The environment of the space is opened and getting “instant sight of the space with the use of glass walls and partitions. The goal for this concept is to create easy to use workspaces, social interaction, and that all the employees have a connection through the space through the concept of social media.

RETAIL ENTRANCE MEDIA ROOM
PERSPECTIVES
Gallery
style layout is the proposed design concept behind Strewn Winery, relating the art of wine making to a contemporary art museum, to showcase wine as an art form. The idea is to create a contemporary space to highlight the art of making wine. The objective is to create a space that is modern and sophisticated. Hence, the aspect of a gallery style, like an exhibition and appreciation for wine. The introduction of angles will give the space an abstract and contemporary feel The goal is to highlight the wine making process, like art, wine is divine. With the angular planes, it will create a unique interior structure, bringing in the contemporary gallery style layout. The use of contrasting colours, such as neutral and dark tones will enhance the concept of a contemporary gallery style layout.

PAVE: STORE DESIGN CATEGORY
CONCEPT STATEMENT
Retail
REI - OUTDOORS STORE 2014
In the late 1800’s, the concept of radar was to get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ in an organized direction. In todays society, radar’s are used more than for direction, it is used as to depict social status. For example, radars are used as a means to track modern values and trends in society and staying connected. Screen monoters are the connection implementing smartphone, as the screen is split between how to stay connected with REI, such as apps, and the other screen advertisments for the store at each departments up. With this new modern energetic design, it will attract customers to gain full experience as the store creates moments through their ’journey’ from point ‘A’ to ‘B’. “What’s on your radar” will be expressed through the store through contemporary design and relationship with the community.
Markets
have a reflective approach when designing for each department, as the space enhances and reflects the merchandise that is being sold. This strategy is used within the new REI building creating different experiences for the customer as they can connect and feel submersed of the design envoking outdoor qualities. Effective eye catching signage and space planning of laying out the four most important departments at the front and back of the store is also another contribute to a market feel. The new REI building is interactive, thrilling, and always contemporary, i.e. what’s on the radar attracting millennial’s and all types of age groups. 36
37
1
When first entering REI customers view are two waterfalls, the map of the store, a screen monitor showing REI’s advertisements and the companys logos. The suspended light bulbs represent high traffic areas on a radar. The water department’s main moments are the two waterfalls and the ceiling detail. The ceiling detail is a dropped ceiling with translucent blue panels, lit with led lighting, creating an underwater feeling.
2
The cash and wrap is clean and organized captivating customers attention with impulse buys, two large screens on the columns playing action sports/ REI advertisement. Customers can also enjoy watch people rock-climbing though the cut out wooden panels on the right. The main materials are thin flagstone on top of plywood to represent a cave, walnut vinyl covering the columns and countertops.
3
The energetic bike department allows for customers to be interactive with the vinyl rectangles along the floor creating a lane. Bicycles on the wall are lit by led strip lighting, and the bicycles at the top are lit with track lighting.
4
The Garage is a representation of a shop on the mountain side, as the brans mountain’s simulates a rooftop. The bench provided on the side allows for customer to wait as their product is getting fixed.
