BEYOND LORETO

Welcome

“…a place from which we depart”

I am delighted to introduce our community to the very first edition of ‘Beyond Loreto Coorparoo’. Over many years, the College has produced the ‘Chronicle’ as a way of communicating with our extended Loreto community. ‘Beyond’ is the new name for this publication, and it includes a greater focus on the broader Loreto Coorparoo family. We hope to connect our past pupils and current Loreto families and to share information about events, achievements and news relevant to you, our past pupils. The title of this publication was inspired by a musical work commissioned in 2019 for our inaugural ‘Ceremony of Excellence’. ‘Beyond the Shores’ was written by Alexander Voltz and a text crafted by the then Director of Mission for Loreto Ministries Limited, Anne Muirhead. ‘the image of the shoreline; the place where we contemplate taking the first step, where we ponder the possibility and beauty of the horizon… and a place from which we depart…’ (Muirhead, 2019). As we prepare our graduates for life beyond Loreto, the College Board has developed the Strategic Plan 2024 which outlines the vision for Loreto into the future. Staff, students and parents have provided feedback into our Reviewed Masterplan and we look forward to sharing this with our extended community as the next phase of the consultation process. These are important steps in the governance of the College under the leadership of the Board, chaired by former Loreto College Coorparoo parent, Donna Orazio.

‘Cherish God’s vocation in you. Let it be constant, efficacious and loving’ (Mary Ward, 1645)

In June, the College was able to formally thank former Board Chair, Di Bukowski, for her significant contribution to the governance of Loreto Coorparoo and retiring Director of Finance and Business Operations, Noel Williams. We were fortunate to have many current and former Board and Board Committee members in attendance to share their memories of the College as we look to the future with confidence. In attendance were also three Loreto Coorparoo prior College Principals: Carmel Dunne, Cheryl Hamilton (1978) and Anne Kelly, ibvm. What is notable about all these leaders is their commitment to the values of a Loreto education while at the same time ensuring an education responsive to the needs of the times.

Farewell TO THE CLASS OF 2020 Flourish on the wings of truth

The Class of 2020 certainly flourished in their final year despite the challenges presented by COVID-19. This cohort were the first to complete Year 12 under the new ATAR system in Queensland, which was going to be daunting in its own right but the challenges of their senior year were complicated by the pandemic. As a result, the Seniors re-imagined and re-invented key events that met COVID safe requirements including Mission Day which became Mission Week. Friday morning homeroom visits to younger year levels took place in virtual and real time to ensure there was regular engagement across the year levels. It was wonderful to see the students all gather together to celebrate their Formal in September. With many restrictions in place and no dancing allowed thanks to social distancing rules, they still managed to have a fabulous evening. The Class of 2020 showed resilience, determination and innovation throughout the year and proved that they could flourish in the face of adversity.

The Class of 2020 showed resilience, determination and innovation throughout the year. They certainly proved that no matter what, they will always flourish. 4

Welcome to the

CLASS OF 2026!

We were delighted to officially welcome 157 Year 7 students from over 40 different primary schools through the gates on the first day of school. The students attended two Orientation Days in late 2020 as part of their transition from primary to high school. The Orientation Program is comprehensive and provides students with the opportunity to experience language and elective subjects on offer, learn about the many co-curricular opportunities and audition for Music Ensembles.

Year 6 students also have the opportunity to represent Loreto in the Summer Water Polo competition. With over 50 participants this year, this is fast becoming a very popular program. The Year 7 cohort enjoyed a fabulous few days away at the Friendship and Personal Development Camp held at Tallebudgera in early Term 2. Camp provides another opportunity for students to develop friendships and get to know homeroom teachers and key staff.

6

BEYOND LORETO

Fast forward to Term 3 and the Class of 2026 are all looking very settled and embracing the many opportunities on offer. Before we know it, they will be heading into Year 8 and we will be welcoming the Class of 2027 through the gates.

2021 OUTSTANDING Young Alumnus Award Established in 2019, these awards have been created to recognise, acknowledge and celebrate the College’s alumni for one or more of the following areas: professional, business, academic, research, government, sport, social justice and contributions to the community at local, state, national and/or international levels.

HELEN SVOBODA (2011) Studying at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in the Jazz course, Helen graduated with first class honours in the Bachelor of Music. She also received the Conservatorium Medal for outstanding achievement. She has since travelled to the Netherlands to complete a Masters of Music. Now an award-winning bass player, singer and composer, Helen is known for her exploration of innovative practices as a musician. She has won many awards including a Queensland Jazz award in 2019, the Maastricht Jazz Award in 2021, and the Freedman Fellowship in 2020, one of the most prestigious awards in Australian Jazz. This is an incredibly prestigious award – artists cannot self-nominate but rather are independently selected as candidates by distinguished musicians from around Australia. While the maximum age for candidates is 35 years, this is not an award for students or emerging artists. Instead it recognises “artists who are already very well established and at the top of their profession”. What an absolutely amazing achievement by our very own alumni! Helen has performed with many well-known artists including Katie Noonan and Emma Pask and has performed at many festivals including the Woodford Folk Festival, the Queensland Music Festival and the Hasselt Jazz Festival. At the end of 2020, she was appointed to the role of Pathways Associate Artist with the Australian Art Orchestra. She is also the daughter of our very own esteemed guitarist, composer and teacher, Dr Paul Svoboda. Congratulations Helen!

GEORGIA JOHNSON (2015)

MELANIE & GEORGIA KLINAKIS (2014)

Georgia graduated in 2015 and was awarded an Athletic and Academic Scholarship to Georgia State University in Atlanta, USA.

Melanie and Georgia graduated in 2014. The twins went on to each complete a Bachelor of Business at QUT and after working for several years in their respective fields, decided that corporate life wasn’t for them.

After completing four years of study, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Affairs. Georgia was awarded Academic Honours every semester and was named as part of the Conference All-Tournament Beach Volleyball Team in her freshman year. Unfortunately the senior season was cut short due to COVID-19 however Georgia managed to equal the fifth most wins in program history with 71 match wins across four seasons. Currently living on the Sunshine Coast and studying a Bachelor of Engineering – Chemical and Environmental, Georgia continues to train as much as possible and is a member of the Queensland Academy of Sport. Georgia and her playing partner (who also completed her undergraduate degree in the USA on a volleyball scholarship) have competed in the Australian National Tour with a notable Silver Medal in the first round. They were seeded last in this tournament and competed against the 1st seeds in the Gold Medal match. In addition to this, they have competed in the Queensland State Tour earning three Gold Medals and one Silver Medal. Their goal is to represent Australia and begin playing internationally as soon as possible.

In 2020, they took a leap of faith and launched their own dessert business. Baked by M&G was established in memory of their grandmother, Yiayia who taught them to never take food for granted, cook with love and care, and most importantly, never leave a crumb on the plate. Over the years, they shared many memorable occasions baking with Yiayia, watching and learning from the master and they soon acquired a knack for cooking and baking. Despite the many trials and tribulations of starting a new business along with the challenges of COVID-19, they don’t have any regrets about the path they have chosen. They are overjoyed to be pursuing their dream of spreading little moments of magic through their artisanal desserts. They both believe that Yiayia would be over the moon to see them continue to spread joy and happiness through their food – food that’s not meant to be enjoyed alone, but shared with friends, family and loved ones. bakedbymg.com.au

TimelessTales Jill Webb Award for Proxime Accessit We were delighted to have Jill Webb (1952) join us at our Academic Assembly in February to present the inaugural Jill Webb Award for Proxime Accessit to Bridie Webber. This award was named in Jill’s honour due to the length of time she spent at Loreto and her scholastic achievements. It was wonderful to hear her tales about life at Loreto in the early days. Following is her reflection… I came to Loreto College Coorparoo in 1940 and graduated in 1952. This period includes two years in Glenn Innes when the school was evacuated there in 1942 and 1943. I was aged 7 and 8 at the time. A Loreto education was very different from that at other schools in Brisbane. It was not directed towards passing public exams, but towards turning us into widely educated women. As well as the normal primary school subjects we began French and Latin when we reached Year 5. We had etiquette lessons and Mother Gertrude took us for a class called Greetings where we learnt to behave respectfully in social settings. Most importantly we were encouraged to read. The universally used State readers were not for us – our Year 5 class reading book was Ben Hur by Lew Wallace and in Grade 6 it was The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. I still have my copy with Jill Webb 1947 written in my childish hand. In Grade 7 we read A Tale of Two Cities, also by Dickens. As to expectations of our behaviour, we were left in no doubt as to what was right and what was wrong nor as to what the Catholic Church believed and taught. Reprimands were handed out when needed but we were treated by the nuns with respect and kindness. Classes were small at Loreto - probably five to eight girls. We sat for the Secondary School Public Exams and when it came to Junior (Year 10) our class did well. I achieved 8 As and 2 Bs in my ten subjects. In the Senior (Year 12) our class of six again did well. We only studied Humanities and Maths - no Senior Science. I was awarded an Open Scholarship to the University of Queensland, which was awarded to the top 35 students in the state. I was the first from Loreto to get one of these scholarships. I salute my wonderful teachers, especially Mother Marie Therese, Mother Bernarda and Mother Rosario.

Senior Past Pupils’ 50+ Years Due to ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19 last year, the College was not able to host the Semester 2 Mass and Senior Past Pupils’ Reunion. This occasion is much loved by our past pupils and given the Class of 1970 missed their first opportunity to attend this significant event, the College decided to send a special care pack to each guest. The pack consisted of a card handwritten by a student, a tea towel and chocolate. The Class of 1970 also received their very special 50 Years’ plus badge. The feedback from the recipients was overwhelmingly positive - the past pupils were so very grateful for the thought and effort that went into this initiative. The College is looking forward to hosting the 2021 Senior Past Pupils’ Reunion later this year.

Connecting our COMMUNITY

International

Women’s Day International Women’s Day was celebrated in-style this year with our Mother Daughter Breakfast held at the Greek Club for the first time. The event sold out in less than 24 hours with a number of people hoping for last minute tickets. It was wonderful to see our community together to celebrate this important day. The special guests were three past pupils: Georgia Johnson (2015) and Melanie and Georgia Klinakis (2014) sharing valuable advice and inspiring stories that matched this year’s theme #choosetochallenge. You can read more about these ladies on page 12.
