Natasha Kosak YCN Student Awards 2015/16

What is YCN? Launched in 2001, the annual YCN Student Awards uniquely shine a light on emerging creative excellence. The programme runs closely alongside leading Universities, Colleges and Art & Design Schools around the world. The YCN Student Awards are based around a collection of live creative briefs, written each year by diverse partnering organisations — united in the value they place on creativity. We believe that creativity is a vital tool in driving commercial, organisational and social change. Students, and those to have graduated within the last 12 months, are invited to take part — and submit their work by the 24th March 2016. Submissions are rigorously assessed by the organisations that wrote each brief, before winning entrants are published and awarded at a splendid Ceremony each year. All winning work is showcased in the pages of the YCN Student Annual. 15,000 copies of the Annual are distributed across education, and across the creative industries internationally. The YCN Student Awards enable all those that take part to benefit from engaging with thoroughly contemporary communication challenges, and give increased confidence, visibility and employability to all those that excel within them. The Call for Entries for the 2015/16 programme was launched on 30th October 2015. The deadline for submissions is March 24th 2016.

The brief: Creatively use paper to promote our new retail space: The Imaginative Papers Shop. Background More and more of our clients request Fedrigoni papers to be sold in single sheets. The uses for these single sheets vary, but range from same day mock ups for client briefs, small art projects, wedding stationary to student work. The Fedrigoni warehouse located in Northampton serves the majority of our customers but is not equipped to supply single sheets. So, it was decided that an established retail outlet would be best to handle this on our behalf. The London Graphic Centre – A leading supplier of material to the art and design community is regarded as a major outlet of its kind, offering unparalleled choice from leading suppliers around the world. It is the perfect place to offer single sheets of Fedrigoni paper and other paper products including artist pads, notebooks, diaries and stationary items.

You are free to incorporate any Fedrigoni paper range(s) into the design/concept of your campaign. To learn more about Fedrigoni papers you can refer to our online Paper Selector which can be found on our website and you are more than welcome to pop into our Imaginative Papers Studio on Clerkenwell Road in London. You will be able to view our paper range swatches, see printed samples and get some inspiration! We are open Monday to Friday, 9:30 till 5pm, be sure to give us a call beforehand to let us know that you’ll be coming It is not required that you strictly use Fedrigoni paper to illustrate ideas. Entries will not be penalised for using other papers. However, if you would like to include some Fedrigoni papers into your work feel free to make use of the sheets provided in the sample pack

The Creative Challenge Don’t just create a leaflet! Think about how you can use graphic design and paper to introduce customers to our new retail space. Your campaign should do this in a clever and visual way; it might include special prints, booklets, direct mailers or other elements that put paper to great use to engage with people. You are welcome to develop non paper-based elements to support your central ideas; but we want paper to be at the heart of your thinking.

Fedrigoroni Since its foundation in 1888, Fedrigoni has specialised in fine paper for printing, editing, labels, bookbinding, packaging and paper products. While this remains very much at the heart of the business, the company continually creates new paper processes and technologies that satisfy the ever-changing aesthetic and technical demands of the market. Thanks to an advanced logistics system benefiting from 11 warehouse branches in Italy and seven abroad, Fedrigoni builds strong relationships with customers and provides them with highly tailored services, with very fast turnaround times. By collaborating closely with customers, Fedrigoni creates specially customised paper products along with the 2,500 standard items that are always in stock. Fedrigoni never flags in the attention it pays to sustainability and respect for the environment: that attention starts with its raw materials, which it sources exclusively from suppliers who practice responsible environmental policies, and its production facilities, whose energy comes from cogeneration plants, and continues right through to the finished product and distribution. The Group has dedicated many years to expanding its range of papers bearing FSCŽ Chain of Custody certification. By 2010, the company had achieved a percentage of no less than 85%. After researching the company, I learnt that Fedrigoroni has previously ran briefs with YCN. Student Chris O’leary produced some amazing pieces for the YCN brief. (See right)

The history of Fedrigroni. HISTORY In Italy, Fedrigoni Cartiere is synonymous with paper. Today we’re part of the Fedrigoni Group: a global enterprise of several integrated companies producing everything from art paper and stationery to paper security systems and banknotes. Our name has been linked with paper-making as far back as 1717, when budding paper merchant Giuseppe Fedrigoni founded the San Colombano paper mill in the ancient northern fortress town of Rovereto. It wasn’t until 1888, when his descendant Giuseppe Antonio Fedrigoni combined his savings, his wife’s dowry and capital provided by a partner to set up the first mill in Verona that production began on an industrial scale and Fedrigoni Cartiere was born. The company quickly became renowned not just for the unrivalled quality of its paper, but also for its commitment to research, experimentation and invention. The factory itself has since seen two world wars, four fires and five generations of a family that still runs the company today.

ENVIRONMENT We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously. We work hard to minimise our impact, reducing our use of energy and water and decreasing the carbon emissions at every stage of the manufacturing process. The Group has dedicated many years to expanding its range of papers bearing the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certification, which oversees the safeguarding of natural habitats as well as guaranteeing sustainability. By 2010, we had achieved a percentage of no less than 85%.

PRODUCTION

Since its foundation in 1888, Fedrigoni has specialised in fine paper for printing, editing, labels, bookbinding, packaging and paper products.

PEOPLE Our most important asset is our people. It’s their dedication and passion that make our business what it is. In return, we are committed to giving all of our employees the skills and training they need to reach their full potential. Across the group, we have nearly two thousand employees in seven countries. We ask all of our employees to comply with the Group’s Code of Ethics, which endorses principles of transparency, fairness, trust and good working conduct, as well as setting clear and consistent standards for health, safety and environmental management. Every year, around 75% of our permanent workforce attend at least one training course, which is either managerial or technical/specialist (excluding technical on-the-job-training). This adds up to almost 20,000 hours of training each year. We make safety in the workplace a priority. Around 900 employees take part in health and safety courses, workshops and events every year. Our health and safety monitoring across the group shows that these have resulted in a sharp reduction in accident frequency and seriousness, as well as a decrease in average sick-leave periods.

I thought it could be important to note down contact info for Fedrigoni incase I need to come back to it during my designs for the contents of the box. As I am creating mini cards contaning infomation about Fedrigoni on it, the contact info is a vital piece of information.

My Ideas: The basis of my idea is to create an animation using paper to advertise the new store for Fedrigroni. My first idea was to start the advert with a tree, it being cut down and transported to the factory where they produce the paper. It would then be transported to the shop, put on the shelves and show a customer buying the product. The staff at the shop would bag it in a branded bag, and it would zoom in to the bag to reveal the logo. My second idea was to show a piece of paper being folded in to a paper aeroplane and being thrown. The paper aeroplane would be shown travelling through the streets of London and would land in the new stores, in the hands of a customers. I would show the customer unfolding the aeroplane to reveal the Fedrigoroni logo. Another idea I had using the paper aeroplane method was to show a child using paper aeroplanes to send letters to a loved one (maybe a family member who is currently in another country/serving). The idea is that the paper is so amazing that it reaches the family member. This would have more emotion surorunding it, which I feel makes people remember the advert and product more. I want to create something that will be remembered! My other ideas included more physical items: I wish to create some special prints, booklets or direct mailers Direct mailers - maybe a little box with paper samples in - A special edition envelope to encase the special

prints - An inforgraphic about the comany and its products, folded in to its own attached envelope. My main idea for producing direct mailers is to have the Fedrigroni paper envelope to fold out in order to reveal a limited edition print / paper cut out. This print would advertise the new space in which Fedrigroni is being sold.

More and more of Fedrigoni’s clients requested Fedrigoni papers to be sold in single sheets. The uses for these single sheets vary, but range from same day mock ups for client briefs, small art projects, wedding stationary to student work. The Fedrigoni warehouse located in Northampton serves the majority of our customers but is not equipped to supply single sheets. Vault 49 My reason for choosing Vault 49 as part of my artist research is simply their use of paper within projects. I find their work incredibly interesting to look at, the amount of effort I believe that goes in to this work is just unvelievable. Layering coloured paper/card creates this amazing, intricate effect which I am hoping to aim for within my designs for Fedrigroni. I aim to create the animated advert using very muted colours, maybe just various shades of white. However, for my special edition print and direct mailers I want to make them as bright as I can, so that they are interesting to look at. Much like the work of Vault 49.

http://www.vault49.com/about-us/

Florian Morelet aka Flod Florian Morelet (aka Flod) is another artist I chose to look at because of the material used. Again paper/ card is a huge part of this piece of work. I chose this specific piece becasue of how clean the lines were. It could almost be a vector illustration its that smooth. I aim for my designs in my aimation and other work to be as clean and precise as Florian Morelet’s work.

“One Small Piece of paper for man, one giant leap for mankind

Direct Mailer Ideas As stated earlier in my research, my ideas for direct mailers are: - a little box (graphic print on it) with paper samples in - A special edition envelope to encase the special prints - An inforgraphic about the comany and its products, folded in to its own attached envelope - Fedrigroni paper envelope to fold out in order to reveal a limited edition print / paper cut out. The idea of a dierct mailer is to advertise the new space in which Fedrigroni is being sold in a way that can be posted globally, without any damage being caused. Becasue of this I am swaying more towards the idea of using a sturdy box, to encase an infographic about the company, a special ediion print and a couple samples of the Fedrigroni paper to try out themselves. I also want the box itself to be interesting to look at, so I want to create a print or an image that can be on the box that is striking to look at and means the recipiant of the box doesnt assume its junk mail and throw it away without seeing whats inside. I want to make it so that the recipiant is intrigued to open the parcel. For this reason, I think a box would be more interetsing than just an envelope as it feels more like a gift than informative/junk mail.

Direct Mailer Sketch Ideas These are some sketch ideas for my mailer box. I want the box to feel like a gift to the client, I want the design of the box to be memorable and be tasteful. Containing paper samples, an infographic about the company and a special edition print, I want this box to be useful to both the company and the client.

Direct Mailer Ideas I have taken some photographs of the type of boxes I wish to use for my direct mailers. I want a sturdy box that will fit at least an A5 piece of paper in, with a little room around it. These are some pattern ideas which I super-imposed on to an image of the type of box I will use. My next step is to look in to more possible pattern ideas.

Direct Mailer Pattern Ideas

Direct Mailer Illustrated Box Construction

I ended up creating two possible ideas for the mailer box itself. I first created the illustrated piece seen on the left, I felt like it didn’t look professional or clean enough. This mainly being due to the fact I couldn’t print directly on to the box, so I essentially had to glue pannels of my digitally created design on to the box. I then went on to make a brown paper style box, which I personally prefer. I like the brown parcel paper as it looks as if the reciever of this box I recieving a gift. I also think it looks much cleaner, and involved the element of paper more obviously. I think I will develop on this design a little more. I feel like it needs some kind of imagery on it to show that it is a Fedrigoni product (even if it is just their logo on the front)

Direct Mailer Box Contents Now I have a basis for my mailer box, I need to start thinking about what I wish to put in it. The brief posted was to creatively use paper to promote the new retail space: The Imaginative Papers Shop. Therefore I am going to produce some infographic/leaflets to put within the box to advertise this space. I am also wanting to put some paper samples in this box as that it what Fedrigoni are known for! I think the possibility of a special edition print would be good aswell, as this could be something to keep for the client.

Infographic/Card Sketches

Here are some sketches I created of what I want to produce for my info cards. I want them to be fairly small in size with the posisbility of multiple cards, each having different information on i.e. contact info, history of Fedrigoni, the new space. I want them to be around A6 size so they fit nicely in the direct mailer without being too bulky. I think really proessional, typographic pieces is the way forward for this project to showcase the history and professionalism of Fedrigoni as a company. I want to produce something exciting, yet structured well since Fedrigoni are a well established company, and because of this I feel like they have a certain level of ‘class’ to keep.

Infographic/Card Mock Up Although this current experimental design is unfinished, I thought it would be useful to produce a mock up design of it, to show what it could be. I feel like having these alongside the paper samples and the print etc will tie everything togther and it could be quite a nice mailer box. As well as this contact info card, I need to produce something that showcases the new ‘The Imaginative Papers Shop’, since this is what the breif specified.

The design to the left is an informative piece about ‘The Imaginative Papers Shop’ - I wanted to produce this design on thick card, and the cut out the design at the bottom (laser/hand cut) - I like the idea of this because it gives the paper aEST. new dimension, rather than just 1988 printing on it and calling it a day.

For my designs, I have decided to experiment with the theme of origami. I want to produce things that encorperate something more you can do with paper. A great example of something you can do with paper, in order to make it something new is to fold it in specific ways to produce an origami crane. A crane is the most popular type of origami so this is the shape I will use.

Special Edition Print Ideas The idea to me, of a special edition print is to create something the recipiant can keep as a nice collective piece. I want it to be something they recieve in the direct mail box, along with the infopragic and paper samples. I feel like by recieving a special edition print, (say 1 of only 100 printed) the customer is made to feel more special to the company, rather than just another trarget to get money from. I wan’t the recipiant to feel as though Fedrigroni is making an attempt to reach out to them, as though they really want them to be a customer they can help. At this stage I have no idea what the concept for the print will be. I think maybe a london scene as this will lock in the idea of the new store. At this stage I feel as though the print needs to be something spectacular, rather than your typical run of the mill design. I think maybe adding personal, hand finished touches may help with this. (Maybe an additon of paper cut / gold leaf accents)

Again, for my special edition print I decided to follow to route of origami. I want to produce a print that encorperate something more you can do with paper. A great example of something you can do with paper, inorder to make it something new is to fold it in specific ways to produce an origami crane. A crane is the most popular type of origami so this is the shape I will use. “It is said that a thousand folded cranes, one for each year of its life, makes a wish come true. Shortly after the end of World War II, the folded origami cranes also came to symbolize a hope for peace through Sadako Sasaki and her unforgettable story of perseverance. I will experiment with using one image as a centre piece, but also a repeated pattern. (It may also be possible for me to encorparate the repeated pattern in to my infographic cards to tie it together)

THE IMAGINATIVE PAPERS SHOP

These are my current work in progess designs for my special edition prints. I have decided upon these designs as I want the designs to feel special and precious to the reciever. The silver ones will be limited, but the gold ones will be rare!!

When I requested paper samples from Fedrigoni, I recieved this letter along side them. For this reason, I want to recreate this letter in a way that suits my direct mailer box. It needs to address the client to explain a little ‘Imaginatve Papers Studio’.

Paper Samples I used simple brown parcel paper to test how I would want to showcase the paper samples as I have some actual Fedrigoni paper to use for the real samples. However, since I am yet undecided on how to present the paper, I didnt want to go cutting it up to then change my mind. I want to showcase the paper samples in the best way possible, as this is the product! This is what Fedrigoni are known for! I have done a few experiments regarding size and shape of how I could present the paper samples within an A5 box. I am still yet undecided on how to do this.
