If you have your ultrasound photo or any props that you would like to bring to the shoot, bring them in! Make this session personal to you. Want to include dad and other siblings, they are welcome as well. Don’t be shy! You have a beautiful tummy and you should show it off! However, I recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes to avoid elastic / clothing marks. Put on lotion an hour prior to your session so you avoid having a shiny tummy and/or staining your clothes. Get a manicure of light polish for a more finished look in a closeup of your hands around your belly. Please consider undergarments with your clothing choices, as you do not want lines showing through clothing.

Preparing for your Maternity Session

Preparing for your Maternity Session

Congrats! We are so excited for you! We recommend scheduling your maternity session between 32 and 36weeks. Your belly will have a lovely full shape, and hopefully you’re not too uncomfortable now as well. It will also give you plenty of time to order your portraits.

You may want to include a few baby things like a cute pair of shoes or a special family heirloom in your portrait. I recommend wearing solid colored shirts to focus the attention on your tummy’s shape and your glowing expression. Large patterns distract. Definitely avoid floral prints, swirls, plaids and stripes. Form fitting clothes with a little stretch will compliment your figure rather than loose clothing. Long sleeves tend to be the most flattering, but sleeveless and spaghetti straps work well, too. Please avoid t-shirt length sleeves. If you do choose to show your bare belly (which I highly encourage, although respect your wishes if you do not) consider wearing a top and skirt or pants that won’t leave marks on your tummy. Silk or cotton fabrics work really nicely as they drape beautifully around a pregnant body. Empire waist blouses and dresses, button up shirts, tank tops, long drawstring skirts and tie dresses also really enhance your blooming shape. Dark jeans and black tapering yoga pants make your legs look long and slim. Pick your footwear depending on your clothing. If your toes are exposed in a sandal or you want to be barefoot for some of the photos, consider getting a pedicure. We still want your personality to shine through – so feel free to bring along a colorful scarf or sweater or even some funky jewelery. But please bring it along rather than wearing it so it won’t leave marks that will show up in other shots. Have Fun!

Preparing for Newborn Session 1. Work around the baby’s schedule. Babies tend to photograph best after taking a nap and being well-rested. Make sure your baby receives adequate sleep the night before a photo shoot as well as taken a nap prior to the photo shoot if possible. It’s hard to capture “happy” moments when babies are cranky and tired. There’s nothing wrong with capturing the cranky moments, but there has to be at least a few happy poses in the set. 2. Set aside adequate time and be patient. Plan ahead and don’t rush the day of your baby’s photo session. In addition, be patient during the photo session under all circumstances. If you are flustered and frustrated, your baby will probably be in that same mood as they are very sensitive and connected to their parents’ emotional states. 3. Prepare the baby’s wardrobe. Every parent wants to see their baby dressed in their cutest little outfits - but tone it down for the professional photo shoots. Solid colors work the best and avoid loud logos, words, cartoon characters, and other busy details that can be distracting in a photograph. Simple is good! Have a few outfits picked out ahead of time for variety. Also, don’t forget to get a few bare poses as well - those are just priceless. 4. Decide on props. Baby photos usually consist of the baby leaning on something or playing with something. Come prepared with ideas about what you would like to see in the photographs with your baby. If you have some items at home that you want in the pictures, bring them along. 5. Decide on a location for the photo shoot. Many photographers today are doing more “outside of the studio” photography sessions. There are some beautiful sights in the world so be open-minded and decide where you want to have photos taken of your baby - at home, at the park, at the lake or our home studio. You name it - and it’s done. Some of the most adorable baby photo shoots were taken in places other than the studio so put your thinking cap on and get creative! In conclusion, a baby photo shoot simply requires adequate planning and preparation by the parents in order to produce flawless professional baby photographs that you can reflect on for a life-time.
