Happiness We had just arrived and gotten off the bus. I liked how happy the kids were to see us. It was always a pleasure to feel welcomed in any place we went. This picture is a representation of those emotions that we were hoping to bring to these kids. They were excited to see us and very happy to spend some time with us. And capturing those real emotions made me understand that we somehow brought a little piece of happiness to their lives.

The Poseidon Temple After a long bus ride we arrived to the temple of Poseidon when the sun was setting. Mr. McKee took us for a hike down to the beach, and from the beach we could see the sunset behind the temple. It was unbelievably pretty.

Being Challenged “I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth will I apply ALL my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.” (Og Mandino)

Submerged While submerged in an underground cultural pool with people from all over the world running to make their train, I stopped to capture this moment of madness.

Precious During the academic travel I went to Morocco with my service-learning group. We visited different schools, an orphanage, and a free daycare center for children. Our visit to the daycare was especially emotional for me as these children were about to be abandoned. This little girl is Janet, and she is four months old. Her mother was banished from her family for getting pregnant. To get back into the family this woman had to leave her child. However, she found help in this organization in Agadir, where she was provided with psychological help, food, and a place to live. People at this organization worked with Janet’s mother trying to develop an attachment between her and her child. This is how they usually work with women who find shelter with this organization. However, fathers usually refuse to acknowledge the existence of their children. That is why these kids take their mothers’ surnames, which makes their life very difficult in the future. In their culture it is considered to be shameful to have your mother’s surname. Janet is a wonderful child, who deserves a caring family with both parents. It is terrible that she will pay for the mistakes of her parents.

French Fries When we went to Belgium, we ate French Fries with every single meal. Belgians claim that French Fries are not originally French, but are instead their own invention, like waffles. Unlike most people, Belgians eat their fries exclusively with mayonnaise and do not even serve ketchup with them. Of course one can ask for ketchup and most restaurants will serve it, along with a judgmental look of a Belgian waiter who dislikes the Americanization of their culture.

You who live safe In your warm houses, You who find, returning in the evening, Hot food and friendly faces: Consider if this is a man Who works in the mud, Who does not know peace, Who fights for a scrap of bread, Who dies because of a yes or a no. Consider if this is a woman Without hair and without name, With no more strength to remember, Her eyes empty and her womb cold Like a frog in winter. Meditate that this came about: I commend these words to you. Carve them in your hearts At home, in the street, Going to bed, rising; Repeat them to your children. Or may your house fall apart, May illness impede you, May your children turn their faces from you. By Primo Levi an Italian writer who was imprisoned in Auschwitz

Marrakech We visited a rural orphanage in Marrakech, Morocco in our Service Learning Trip. We went there to play with the kids, make them feel accompanied and build a gym so they can play there full-time. We spent the whole day there and bonded with them in many ways. This particular kid was very welcoming during our visit there.

Omaha Beach Omaha Beach is known as the bloodiest beach fought on during D-Day on June 6, 1944. This sand was walked on by soldiers fighting for their country and their lives, and 70 years after the tide comes in day in and day out as if it never happened.

On Top of the World A great number of stairs were climbed to get to one of the towers of this beautiful cathedral. Unfortunately, some didn’t make it to the top because they were scared of heights. They missed a beautiful sight!

Tracks to Nowhere “I was five years old when the doors of Auschwitz were opened. I walked away from my nightmare, I survived, yes, but Auschwitz never left me”. The words of Lydia Maksymowicz, a survivor of the Holocaust, were resounding in our heads while visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau.
