Grade 4 Personal Narrative B.B. (Best bro)

By Chloe Hassan Sometimes in life there are super nice brothers that take very good care of you. In fact, my brother is one of those people, and I’m very lucky. My brother is always there for me because we play together when I have nothing to do, when i cry he always will finds a way to cheer me up, and most importantly he sticks up for me. One reason that my brother is always there for me is that we play together when I have nothing to do. For example, once when I finished my homework I was sitting on my bed reflecting on what I should do. A few minutes later my brother came and asked me if I wanted to play with him. I just finished doing my homework and I was taking my iPad to watch YouTube and my brother came and asked me if I wanted to play Legos with him. I said yes and it was sooo much fun. We played Lego wars [ my Legos vs my brother’s Legos] in fact this one time I played with my brother I felt it was more fun to play with him than my friends. So this is why I like to play with my brother when I have nothing to do. Another reason that my brother is always there for me is that when I cry he always cheers me up. For example, when I bumped my head in my closet I hit the corner and it hurt soooooo bad. My brother rushed to my room to see if everything was ok. Then he had an idea and he started saying funny jokes, I started laughing soooooo much! So if you’re sad I think you should go to him, he can cheer you up. Although my brother is always there for me because we always play together and when I get hurt he always cheers me up, most of all he sticks up for me. For example one day a boy in first grade choked me and I hated it. When I went home I told my brother and he was VERY mad. He started giving me tips on how to defend myself. I felt very empowered, I almost teared up. It’s just like if I was a turtle and he was my shell, that’s how he would protect me. Now I realize how lucky I am that my brother is always there for me!

A Boy’s Best Friend By Marco Fabio Preatoni

Many people think that dogs don’t matter but I think that dogs are really important. My dog is like having a best friend because he always waits for me when I get home. He always wants me to play with him and most of all he always knows when I am upset. One reason that my dog is like having a best friend is that he always waits for me when I get home. For example, when I get back from school he is always in front of the door, and he always waits for me when I come back from Italy, and he waits for me when I get back from the store. Last Christmas I went to Estonia but I couldn’t bring my dog with me so I left him in Italy with my chef. When we came back from Estonia My dog started to jump, bark and lick my hands. My dog is always there for me just like a best friend. Another reason that my dog is like having a best friend is that he always wants me to play with him. For example, when I get home he always starts to jump around, and he brings me his ball and he follows me everywhere until I throw him his ball. Once I woke up and saw my dog with his ball in his mouth then I took the ball and threw it and six seconds later he was back. My dog always wants to play with me just like a best friend. Although my dog is like a brother to me because he waits for me when I get home, and because he always wants me to play with him, especially he always knows when I am upset. When I am sad he always comes to me. One snowy day I was feeling upset because I was sick and I was really upset because I couldn’t go play outside and then my dog came over to me and jumped on my lap and licked my hand. It always cheers me up and it will probably cheer you up too. I think that you should respect dogs because they have feelings just like humans. All of this shows that a dog can be your best friend because they always play with you, they always wait for you and they always make your day great again.

Having a Pet Teaches You Responsibility By Niccoló Vanossi

Some people think pets are useless but I don’t think so. Pets teach you responsibility because you have to feed them, clean their cage and most importantly you need to put their needs above yours.

People Should Respect Animals By Luca Piconi

Many people don’t realize that animals are treated poorly, so people should respect animals because they all play an important role in our environment, and people need animals to survive, but most of all people should respect animals because they feel emotions just like humans. One reason people should respect animals is that they all play an important role in our environment. For example, ants clean up, as do flies and rats. If there was a rotting deer, ants and flies and rats would be working hard to decompose it. Worms fertilize plants so they can grow beautifully. Once my dad accidentally stepped on a lizard and crushed it. One day later, ants were swarming around it. Don’t worry, there’s a balance. This shows why people should respect animals. Another reason that people should respect animals is that people need animals. For example, people need cow meat, sheep’s wool and pig’s delicious prosciutto. Another example is that if mosquitoes didn’t exist, poisonous frogs wouldn’t exist, and if poisonous frogs didn’t exist, amazon rain forest people wouldn’t exist because they couldn’t hunt. We are all connected.

One reason is that pets teach you responsibility is that you have to feed him every day. For example if you don’t give him a lot of food he will not have any energy to play. If you give him to much food he will not feel well. If you give him the same amount of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner he will have a lot of energy to play. Paying attention to your pets food needs helps you be more responsible. Another reason that pets teach you responsibility is that you have to clean his cage every day. One day I was playing outside with a frisbee when the frisbee flew to the turtle cage. I didn’t know if Tobia, the turtle, was scared or he needed to go to the bathroom but I knew one thing; he pooped. I started cleaning his cage when my sister came outside. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Cleaning the turtle cage,” I replied. My sister and I ran into the house and to asked my grandma and my mom if we could keep the turtles. She said, “Maybe if we were responsible.” I thought: I just cleaned his cage all ALONE if that was not being responsible than what was? I thought I should be given the Nobel Prize for responsibility. So I decided to show her how I am responsible by taking care of the turtle. The she decided I could keep him. Another reason pets teach you responsibility is that you have to put their needs above yours. If your pet is trying to escape from a predator and you have to do homework what would you do? I would save my pet. Because pets are more important than everything. Taking care of your pet is a big responsibility. Pets are a big responsibility because you have to feed them, clean their cage and most importantly put your needs before your own. If your are thinking of buying a pet remember that it is a lot of responsibility.

Most importantly, people should respect animals because they feel pain, joy, sadness and anger exactly as we do. Stop and think of how many animals die or get slaughtered a day for no reason, no reason at all. Did you know that 112,000,000 animals get slaughtered a year needlessly? Sometimes even farm animals die needlessly. Alligators, foxes, some species of snakes ONLY GET HUNTED FOR THEIR SKIN! How would you feel if people treated you like this? Animals have the same emotions as we do so we should respect them. All these are reasons why people should respect animals. They do good things for us, so why do we kill them in return? Now go treat animals the way they should be treated! Next time you see an animal you respect it.

Dogs Can Be Teachers By Delaney McKee

Have you ever had a dog that loves you sooo much? Well I had two dogs, Fido and Dante and they both taught me life lessons. Dogs can teach you life lessons about responsibility, compassion and most of all trust. Dogs can teach you about responsibility because you need to walk your dog, feed your dog and give affection. Your dog must get groomed taken outside for potty time and especially they need to be cleaned up. Sometimes you don’t even realize that you are being responsible for your dog. For example, when you walk your dog you are showing everyone that you are being responsible. When you take care of your dog you show that you’re responsible. Dogs can teach you to be compassionate because taking care of a dog requires understanding and empathy. By taking care of a dog you can learn to be kind and start thinking of others. You can practice being compassionate on your dog. For example, when I had to leave my dogs I felt sooo sad because I loved them. Every time I would leave my dogs I would wonder what they were doing and if they were okay. When I would come back they would be so excited I would forget that I ever left them. Dogs can teach you to trust. You could learn from your dog because they trust you, and that could teach you to trust others like people you don’t even know. When I was younger I used to ride my dogs like I was a cowgirl. They trusted that I would not hurt them. That taught me to trust other people like random strangers that I didn’t even know! Here I am almost ten years old, and I said good-bye to my dogs six and a half years ago. But I still remember the life lessons about responsibility, compassion and trust that my dogs taught me. Dogs are like your B.F.F, Best Furry Friends!

Chapter 1 - What is TASIS?

TASIS is an American School in Switzerland. The name TASIS was created from the sentence THE AMERICAN SCHOOL IN SWITZERLAND. You can be at TASIS from 4 to 18. From Pre-K to 12th grade. There are about 700 people at TASIS. When TASIS came first to life there were about 8 people. There are many different buildings at TASIS. There are many different TASIS around the world.

Chapter 5 - Quiz

Chapter 3 - What do we do at TASIS?

We do lots of specials, like P.E. P.E. is gymnastics. We do games and sports. And library, library is a place where we get books. And music, music is where we sing. Science lab, in science we do lots of projects. In homeroom we do writing workshop, and math, and history, and reading workshop. We do holidays like Christmas and Halloween.

Chapter 4 - What do we wear at TASIS?

We wear TASIS uniform. On Chapter 2 - The History of TASIS normal days we wear red or white shirts. Boys wear pants. TASIS is 60 years old. Mrs. Girls wear skirts. On P.E. day Fleming started TASIS. First at we wear gray shirts. Boys and TASIS there were eight students. girls wear TASIS pants. In the Mrs.Aeschliman started Hadsall. Halloween festival we wear 2nd graders to 5th graders go costumes. And in the Christmas to Hadsall and Aurora. Pre-K concert we do not have dress through 1st graders go to code. At high school is different. Focolare. They wear different clothes.

Chapter 6 – Author’s Note

We are a class. We are 2nd graders. We like to write. We are writers and readers. We have 13 students in our class. We work together and together we are friends. Our teacher is Mrs. Nijenhuis. In our class there are 4 girls and 9 boys. We used to have two teachers they are called Mrs. Nijenhuis and Ms. Weston. For chapter 1 Timmy and Luca are working. And for chapter 2 Filippos and Lucian are working on. For chapter 3 there is Giulia and Andre. For chapter 4 Ivan and Maria. For chapter 5 it’s Lucas and Alex.

Reflection about TASIS

I really don’t know where to start. I wrote so many poems and they were kind of dramatic (hint). It’s nice but now this comes to an end. I hid a poem in this newspaper. You will see how I feel. Overall as we all know, imagination is more important than reality.

When I first came to fifth grade I was alone in the playground until a girl named Camille came to me and asked me if I wanted to play with her and that’s what I did. I went with her to the monkey bars and played with her and then the bell rang. I followed her to a line of people and I saw a teacher she smiled at me, it was a bright smile, a happy smile and from then I knew that fifth grade would be the best class ever. At first I was very shy but then I made new friends and I became confident and arrived to this day. I am going to go to middle school really soon. I am excited but I will miss everyone. This experience was wonderful and I loved enjoying time with everyone. I loved the trip in Kandersteg. Then I had a new friend called Giada she was really friendly and I liked staying with her. We had a playdate that I enjoyed so much, we painted our nails the same color and same style then we went to a shop and we bought things together. I knew I was going to love it here in TASIS. TASIS ES

When I first came to TASIS, I was in 2nd grade and there is where the beautiful adventure began. I had a marvelous teacher (Ms. Santoro). There was a boy that was really kind to me, especially at recess, because we always played soccer and always had a bunch of fun. In 3rd grade I had a really fun teacher called Ms. Nijenhuis but sadly she had to stop temporarily because she was pregnant, however another super fun teacher, this time called Ms. Raymond. We had Zen Friday and we got to talk all the time. In 4th grade I had Mr. Lemoine and he was so funny and cool (that is probably the best male teacher I ever had) we ate every possible thing to eat and we went outside for a lot of time. And finally 5th grade, I have a fullof-swag teacher (MS. KIRILOVA). I had 4 fantastic years and I hope they will keep going. By Filippo D’Alconzo

When I started 5 grade I was nervous. But little did I know that the rest of the year would be exciting. We soon started to learn about the Age of Exploration, The Renaissance, The Aztecs! But I got the best teacher in elementary school: Ms. Kirilova! I have one more word to say. Future 5 graders have fun in elementary school! P.S. Ms. Kirilova is a great teacher! Fourth graders we hope you have a great year in 5 grade!

My experience in TASIS elementary I came to TASIS in 3rd grade and I was very frightened. Ms.Nijenhuis (the coolest) was my teacher while she was pregnant but not for the whole time because she had her baby Huck. So I got the best teacher in the world Ms. Raymond. Then I went to fourth grade and had Ms. Bearden who was also awesome and now I’m in 5th grade with Ms. Kirilova getting me ready for middle school. A Thank You To Elementary There is always a time when you feel weird or even scared. Especially when it’s your first year. You don’t know what will happen, or what won’t happen. But in fourth grade, I only felt that way for a few months. I say thanks to Mr.Lemoine, for making my year a near perfect year. I also say thank you to Ms.Kirilova, for making my final year in elementary school perfect. I feel sad that Mr.Lemoine left, he was a nice and funny teacher. But Ms.Kirilova made my middle school blues (being sad about middle school) very small (reducing my worries for middle school). I am very fortunate to have some perfect teachers in elementary.

When I first came to TASIS I was a scared little pre-k girl. I’ve gone through all elementary grades (pre-k, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, and now I’m at the end of 5th grade getting ready to go to Middle School). During all these years I’ve always had amazing supportive teachers. My pre-k teachers were Ms. Ilse and Ms.Tracie, for kindergarten I had Ms.Williams and same for 1st grade, for 2nd Ms. Santoro; then for 3rd grade I had Ms. Kirilova, 4th grade Mr. Lemoine and in present day again the amazing Ms. Kirilova!! Ricordi, bilanci e aspettative dei nostri anni alle elementari

“Ricordo il primo giorno di scuola elementare come se fosse ieri e adesso ci ripenso ogni giorno. Mi ricordo che ero entrata in classe con i miei genitori accanto a me, uno da una parte e uno dall’altra. Sui banchi c’era scritto il nome dello studente e accanto un simpatico animaletto per ognuno. Adesso che sono in quinta sono molto più sicura di me stessa e ho molti più amici. Molte persone mi dicono di scappare e non andare alle medie, ma io credo che sia un’avventura per cui vale la pena rischiare. I miei maestri adesso sono Ms. Eleonora, la mia insegnante, Ms. Kirilova e Ms. G, docenti fantastiche. Da grande vorrei diventare un’attrice perché l’anno scorso cominciai teatro e da allora mi sono sempre più appassionata all’argomento. Mi piace sognare in grande e lo farò” Carolina Farina

“Mi ricordo quando ho iniziato un nuovo momento, una nuova vita, LA SCUOLA ELEMENTARE. All’inizio credevo che fosse difficile ma proseguendo iniziava a migliorare. Avevo più amici, mi divertivo con i maestri a fare giochi, in piscina, con i pesci e le barche. Mi insegnavano a leggere l’inglese, l’italiano, scrivere e fare compiti. Ma adesso non è più così, adesso è più difficile, devi studiare tanto e fare tanti compiti, non si gioca più con le barche, le marionette, i pesci e la piscina ora che sono in quinta. Io ho soltanto ricordi dell’asilo perché erano, momenti bellissimi di tutta la mia vita. Io voglio avere dei bei momenti della scuola media, voglio divertirmi, avere tanti amici e essere bravo”. Quindi posso dire che tutte le mie aspettative sono state soddisfatte. Ho ancora molto da scoprire dalla scuola, ma so che questo cambio di scuole mi ha dato delle possibilità che non avrei mai potuto immaginare. Sono molto felice di avere l’opportunità di scoprire cosa la vita ha da offrirmi con le migliori delle risorse possibili.” Mariaurora Rosso

Spero che nelle medie incontri buone maestre come Ms. Parolari; che i miei voti siano buoni e che sia una buona alunna. “Mi ricordo quando ero arrivata davanti alla scuola totalmente confusa. Era il primo giorno di una nuova emozionante avventura perché cominciavo la prima elementare. In quel bellissimo anno ho imparato un sacco di cose. Ma la cosa più emozionante era con la nostra docente di classe Ms. Cecilia: facevamo tutto, era magnifico. Era proprio il momento dove facevo volare le mie idee per condividerle con tutta la mia classe! La quarta è stato un anno un po’ così così. Non era il massimo tra le amicizie. Era l’anno più grigio e buio della mia vita. Comunque è stato un anno che mi ha insegnato che ognuno è fatto come è e quello mi ha fatto diventare una persona più forte. Quest’anno sono in quinta ed è molto impegnativo. È un anno pieno di emozioni e allegria. E finalmente c’è una buona notizia: le tragedie e i litigi sono diminuiti tanto. È un anno intenso e ricco di compiti. Ma la cosa più importante è imparare. Infatti ho arricchito il mio vocabolario, ma ho capito anche cosa è la fatica. Do you like puppies that are cute? Well then you will like the book Flash from the series The Puppy Place. It’s so good. You will have a lot of feelings when you will read the book Flash. He is so cute! He is black and white. Please get lots of feelings so you will understand me. If you think this book is not good, you can just not read any more books from the series Puppy Place. But I think that you will love it! My favorite part was when Flash ran everywhere he went to get a little bit of food. That was funny. I didn’t read all of it so I do not know if it is really my favorite part. But for now it is! The saddest part is when he gets locked in the bar without anybody. But he still finds things to do that are fun. For example he runs in the bar like a crazy dog… Sorry I can’t tell you the whole story. But I think so you will find out what happened. Dear Readers, If you like funny characters then Ralph is the perfect character for you. Ralph is intelligent and curious, and really interested in vehicles. He lives in a hotel in California and the floor number is 215. And scares neighbors. The neighbors have a girl and she thinks mice are cute and she is scared of mice. On chapter three Ralph falls into the wastebasket and can’t get out and thinks of uncle Victor because he did the same thing. Before that his mom calls out, “Don’t forget about uncle Viktor!” because she is really worried. Last time Ralph’s dad died because of an Aspirin tablet, since then the whole family never will eat one. I think This Is Not My Hat is better than I Want My Hat Back because it is funnier and the little fish thinks he is doing the right thing, but he is not. For example the fish says, “So I am not worried about that.” But he needs to worry about that. Another example is when he sees someone and says, “There is someone who has seen me but he said he wouldn’t tell anyone which way I went.” But he told which way he went. And I Want My Hat Back is not that funny because he just needs his hat back. In This Is Not My Hat he steals the hat. And they are both about hats. Your friend, André

What Caused the Age of Exploration? By Edoardo Vasino, Grade 5

Have you ever asked yourself, “ What caused the Age of Exploration?” Well, if you haven’t this essay is perfect for you. If you are interested I would recommend you to read on. A little clue; the United States of America wouldn’t exist if people in Europe weren’t going crazy for spices. Wait a moment, spices?!? How could such common things (now) have changed the entire course of history? As I said before, if you are interested in read on. So, let’s continue. But how did they change the course of history? Let’s go back to the Middle Ages in Europe. You are a merchant who one day an Arab comes to you with a thing you have never seen in your entire life; spices. He says that you put them on your food; which mostly is porridge. So let me reformulate what I just said. A person, one day comes to you and gives you these little things that you put on food. You try your everyday porridge with these spices and it tastes like nothing you have ever eaten in your life. You ask to the Arab for some more, but he says that it costs. You ask the price and figure out that you are not going to try those spices again in your life. After a century people in Europe dream they could try those spices. Venetian merchants were getting more and more rich because the Arab traders were selling the spices to them. And then the Venetians would sell them to Europe, adding money to the price they got the spices from the Arabs. That’s why Venice was a very rich city at those times. Well, why didn’t the Europeans get the spices themselves? You will figure it out on the next paragraph. Arab traders were very untrue people. To think they figured that the Ottoman Empire was block the way by land so the only way to get the spices was by sea. The Europeans didn’t know that you could travel down the tip of Africa (Also known as the Cape of Good Hope). So the Arabs were the only ones who could get to the Spice Islands (now known as the Moluccas). They would also tell the Europeans that through their journey to get the spices they would have to fight against marvelous monsters. But where are the Moluccas? You will figure it out on the next paragraph.

So where are the Moluccas (or Spice Islands)? Geographically and basically they are in the present day Philippines. But the Spice Islands contain most of the Malay archipelago, from the southern tip of Siam till the northern tip of Australia. The spices grew there because the climate was very humid and hot, perfect for growing spices. Nowadays people brought the seeds from the Spice Islands to grow in their country. That’s why people in Italy grow Basil and Oregano. I would say this information will do for this paragraph and let’s pass to the last paragraph: early explorers. As I said, let’s start this paragraph. So we will start with Marco Polo. You probably heard this name, because he influenced the best explorers. It all started when Niccolò and Maffeo Polo decided to take an adventure to Asia. They thought they should bring Niccolò’s son, Marco. By that time, Marco was towards twenty years old, so they thought he was enough mature to take such a journey. As they went, they met the Grand Khan, Kubilai. He asked them to stay at his service as soldiers, and stayed in those areas for some years. One day, Marco got very ill, and had to stay one year in one place. As the Polos continued their intrepid journey through Asia, they passed through Mongolia and China. Marco was amazed of the high technology of China. There were fireworks, paper money, noodles, etc. Years pass, and the Polo family is now very wealthy. At this point they decide to go back home in Venice. When they are back, nobody recognizes them! But too happy enough, Marco is sent to jail. There he meets a writer from Pisa. There Marco tells his adventures in Asia to the writer. The writer was amazed with his tales. He offered Marco to write a book. They published it as Il Milione in Italian. The first copy was written in French. Surprisingly, two centuries after, Christopher Columbus got a copy of Marco’s book in Latin and was amazed by his adventures. Let’s pass back to the last paragraph. Because of the Ottoman Empire blocking the way by land to Asia, the Europeans couldn’t go by horse to Asia. After the Arabs gave up the secret of the Spice Islands, the Europeans started going by the coast of Africa. But Columbus said, “If the world is round, I can sail from Spain and come to Asia.” That would have been true if America didn’t exist. After Amerigo Vespucci found out that America wasn’t India, people started wondering about America; they asked themselves, “Are there other people over there? What could we discover about this new place?” This is how people wanted to discover the world. This was my essay and I hope I answered your questions about the early Age of Exploration.
