HISTORY OF THE MASTER PLAN In 1996, TASIS engaged classical architect and urban designer David Mayernik to develop a Master Plan for the TASIS campus. The result is a long-term plan tailored not only to the needs of our School, but which serves as a model for the world as an ideal academic community. The guiding idea of the Master Plan is to create a village environment to foster a sense of community, complete with green spaces, open piazzas, and beautiful multi-functional buildings. The Plan also places sustainable development at the forefront. TASIS has since become renowned as an example and advocate of sustainable campus design. • 1999 • 2000 • 2001 • 2004 • 2005 • 2006 • 2007 • 2009 • 2010 • 2012

The Palestra opens with a student common room, dance, fitness, and music studios, and a multi-use gymnasium. Campus land expands by 40%; Mayernik extends the Master Plan to the north. Villa del Sole is renovated into a dormitory. Ca’ Pietra is renovated for the Admissions Office, Health Center, and IT Center. M. Crist Fleming Library opens. The building goes on to win the Palladio Award. Ca’ Gioia is converted to a space for art studios and a classroom. Aurora opens, providing classrooms and a large multi-purpose room. Alba renovated, adding three classrooms. The Palmer Cultural Center opens with a jewel of a theater and art exhibition spaces. Lanterna opens: dorms, faculty apartments, Headmaster’s residence, common room, Health Center, and four classrooms. Fiammetta opens with four classrooms. The Ferit Şahenk Fine Arts Center above the Palestrina practice gymnasium opens.

FUTURE OF THE MASTER PLAN Campo Science Center to open with eight new state-of-the-art laboratories, four prep rooms, science faculty workroom, and general classroom.

• 2015 - 2017 An expanded synthetic sports field will replace the current field in two phases. • 2016 A 65-car parking garage in the curve with a basketball court and swimming pool above will take the place of Ca’ Pietra. • 2018 Corona dormitory, classrooms, and Student Center to replace Alba and Ca’ Gioia. • 2020 A new Elementary School building will replace Hadsall and Coach House with underground parking and tunnel between the two sides of the campus. The TASIS Global Village is an internationally-recognized leader in stewardship and sustainability. Completing the Global Village for an expanding school requires continued dedication, hard work, and financial support over many years. The challenge is enormous and exciting! Since its founding in 1956, TASIS has established its reputation as the oldest and finest American boarding school in Europe, and as we realize our Global Village Master Plan we also have the most beautiful campus in Europe: a shining light for Ticino, and a proud expression of America’s contributions to international culture.

The Future of Science in the Global Village

Campo Science Center With sufficient funding by private and corporate donors and careful planning by our Board of Directors, Administration, Science Department, and Master Architect, TASIS students will have new, purpose-built, state-of-the-art science laboratories by 2014. From vaccines and satellites to solar power and the internet, scientific disoveries have enriched, improved, and saved human lives. By investing in the most advanced science center possible, we can better encourage TASIS students to question, experiment, theorize, and explore. Whether in medicine, engineering, biotechnology, or environmental defense, TASIS graduates should be prepared to make the biggest possible positive difference on the planet. TASIS has a tradition of excellent teachers in the natural sciences, but the current science laboratories in De Nobili are outdated and need replacing. The Campo Science Center will provide: • • • • •

Eight spacious, purpose-built laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, and Middle School science courses. The latest equipment for teaching middle and high school science – generous laboratory and lecture spaces, fully equipped workbenches, computers, power sockets, sinks, and gas taps. Three preparation rooms to allow more hands-on practical laboratory work. One Middle School preparation area in the Science Faculty workroom. One general classroom.

These new facilities, coupled with our exceptional teachers and curriculum, will help us provide a more complete liberal arts education – rich in both tradition and innovation – creating graduates who are idealistic, literate, and good stewards who understand the importance of natural resources and sustainable communities. The generation of students now enrolled at TASIS will confront some of the most daunting challenges humanity has ever faced: from climate change to global pandemics, from recurrent famine to water scarcity. We must prepare our students
to face these challenges and turn them into opportunities. Thank you for your support!
