he Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra is here for you. As Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, I’m delighted to present a concert season that offers the TSO experience that you’ve come to know and love in a flexible, user-friendly format. In a TSO first, we are releasing concert information on a quarterly basis in 2021. We have the whole year mapped out but are providing details about composers, works, conductors and soloists in three-month blocks. This allows us to be nimble and to adapt our programming to meet the latest health and safety guidelines. But rest assured that we are as committed as ever to providing a season that will inspire, uplift, challenge and invigorate.

I

t is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 concert year.

With enormous pride, we bring you a very Tasmanian year that is rich, diverse and innovative, and filled with more concerts than ever. It isn’t a ‘normal’ concert year just like nothing about the past year has been normal! But it is packed full of music you will love, performed by your musicians, and presented in new and traditional ways especially for you. Without doubt the greatest challenge we’ve confronted in 2020 has been simply to perform. The biggest questions have been about delivering concerts in a format that is accessible, engaging and, above all, safe for musicians and our much-loved audience. In 2021 we’ll be performing in our home venue – Federation Concert Hall in Hobart – and will play before live audiences of sizes that comply with public health guidelines. To make sure that all Tasmanians can enjoy the TSO in 2021, concerts will also be live-streamed to you at home. Whether you see and hear the TSO via your digital device or in the concert hall, rest assured your experience is 100% authentic – live, real and exhilarating.

We see today’s challenges as a tremendous opportunity to celebrate the musical treasures that we have here in Tasmania and Australia. We are shining a spotlight on our own magnificent musicians and highlighting their soloistic brilliance. We have such a wealth of talent on our island and we can’t wait to celebrate it! Taking our cue from the fashion industry, we are releasing our concert season by ‘collection’: summer, autumn, winter and spring. Full details will be available well in advance of each collection launch. Our subscription model is also changing. You are welcome to subscribe for a full year or you may subscribe month to month. The choice is yours. You will find further information about the 2021 subscription model on pages 7 and 8. Connection and community have never been more vital. As Tasmania’s orchestra, we look forward to sharing new moments of connection, inspiration and beauty with you as the year unfolds. Come with us in 2021. Challenging times demand creative responses. We will deliver for you! Caroline Sharpen CEO

M

usic-making has been central to my life for as long as I can remember. As a performer, I stand at the nexus between the creator of the music – the composer – and the consumer of the music, you, the audience. Without you, I’m communicating to no one. Join me and my TSO colleagues for a year of invigorating music-making. We’re excited to be stepping up to the role of soloists from time to time and bringing our expertise into ever greater prominence. If you’ve already seen and heard the TSO as a live stream, you’re familiar with the up-close thrills and vibrant energy that digital delivery unlocks. Tasmania’s orchestra is here for you. You give meaning to what we do. Let us enrich each other’s lives in the year ahead. Emma McGrath Concertmaster

New Subscription Model

What’s New About This Model

Concert Delivery

This new subscription model takes into account differing performance conditions. It gives you priority when purchasing tickets to concerts with limited seating and gives you full access to our live-streamed concerts and other digital content. Rather than packaging concerts in series, the new model presents concerts in units of time, the basic unit being a month. You therefore have the freedom to subscribe for a month or any number of months up to and including twelve.

Our plan is to perform concerts before live audiences wherever possible. As you would understand, our dilemma is to keep everyone safe – audience, musicians, box office, front-of-house and technical staff. Concerts will be delivered according to governmentmandated health and safety guidelines and audience numbers will be capped. But rest assured, subscribers will receive priority when allocating seats.

Concert Venues The majority of our 2021 concerts will be performed and live-streamed from our home venue, Federation Concert Hall in Hobart. We plan to bring ensembles to other parts of Tasmania too, and will provide full details of the performances in our quarterly concert information.

thank you supporters

I

n recent months the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has pushed boundaries and developed ideas to engage with our audiences in new ways. From TSO Daily Dose to Friday Night Live, these initiatives would not have been possible without the generosity of our patrons. The opportunity to take performances online has brought the TSO to regional Tasmania and beyond and deepened immeasurably the connection with the TSO community. Our supporters have been vital to these developments every step of the way and they continue to help shape the future of the TSO.

We believe orchestral music is for everyone: from our award-winning training programs – which provide pathways to professional careers in music – to championing talent through new commissions, to collaborating with local community groups. Donations to the TSO enable us to continue to provide these opportunities into the future. Thank you for your role in making this happen. Your support not only has an impact on our annual activities but on a diverse community of music-lovers – now and for generations to come. For more information on how you can support the TSO, our ongoing projects, or leaving a gift in your will, please contact the Philanthropy team via philanthropy@tso.com.au or visit tso.com.au.
