101 Ideas

Research & Design Project

REACTIVATE ATHENS / 101 IDEAS is a research and design initiative directed by the RA Lab, a joint collaboration between the Brillembourg & Klumpner Chair of Architecture and Urban Design at the ETH Z端rich1, Urban-Think Tank, and local experts and collaborators from various fields. This multidisciplinary team bridges academia, professional practice, industry, public interest, and community activism to generate new ideas for the city center that focus on design, public policy, and social sustainability.

Oct.2013 - Mar.2014 Zurich, CH & Athens, GR

In the last few decades, parts of central Athens have been defined as areas characterized by urban decline and a long series of negative setbacks, beginning with overbuilding and congestion, followed by the progressive decentralization of middle-class households in the 1970s, and continuing up to the contemporary crisis. As a result, many areas host various processes of conflict, solidarity, vacancy, and diverse sociospatial hierarchies. Poor building quality and the extent of the economic crisis intensify the complexity of

URBAN STRATEGY

Project Breakdown Strategy

IDENTIFY THE CONTEXT The research and design process begins with a robust critial analysis of central Athens using the following tools: sociogeographical mapping, drawing, modeling, interviews (with experts and the community), and writing. The goal of this rigorous exercise is to clearly identify the critical issues and challenges to be addressed and to identify the problems and potentials that will serve as the foundation for design. ESTABLISH THE PROJECT CONSTRAINTS A thorough analysis serves as a foundation to develop appropriate constraints for design concepts and projects - concept, site, scope, scale, and program. These are not given; they must be developed as a strong framework that supports the design. DESIGN The task is to then translate the research into design ideas - new urban models that challenge conventional modes of operating in the contemporary city

wedding and ceremonies venue by the sea

Architecture & Landscape Design

Halkidiki, GR

Mar.2012 - Sep.2012

Under Construction

Area 4000m2

Selfemployed

Located in a long a narrow plot right before the sea, this beautiful site with many olive trees will be used as a wedding and ceremonies venue in the future. The challenges faced were many. First, the two small houses in the north of the site had to have some privacy and silence during events and the event space to have a distinct character that would also be able to host more than 500 people. The site is divided in the line of the entrance. The events space is characterized by the dominance of na-

tive olive trees, that create a dense grid in the space and a small inclination that had to be handled.

sea and have a central character in the site, and in direct relation to that the bar was placed. The building of the secondary uses was placed in the southern part of the plot and the rest of the area was treated in such a way that all of the desired places would fit without having to remove a tree of change the topography dramatically.

Site Plan

Tasos Roidis - Portfolio of Selected Works

The client wanted the minimum amount of changes and only two small buildings, one to house the bar and the serving area and a another that would have all the secondary uses (WC, kitchen, warehouse, small room for the housekeeper). The design focused on the creation of a large deck that would overview the

Design of a Small Tourism Office

on the suburbs of Thessaloniki

Architectural Project / Installation

Located in a suburb of Thessaloniki, this small tourism office, was a product of a change of use in an existing store-building. The small space of it and the disired low cost by the client, didn’t offer many opportunities for radical or luxury design solutions. Furthermore, the complexity of it’s sourroundings, which are characterized by nearly chaotic combinations of labels and facade colours, implied the design solution. In order for the tourism office to be distinguished among others, it was all painted white on the outside an a series of white lables

indicating different places, their direction and their distances, were implemented on the flat roof. This installation serves a doube pourpose; the first is to point out the varieties one has when traveling, and to inspire people to do so, while the second one is to point out this chaotic situation of the anarchy which exists in such subarban areaes in terms of urban aesthetics and communicative criteria.

Area: 10.000 m2

Located in a forest area, this big house with a 10 hectare garden was a very challenging project. The steep slopes, the existing Marina and the needs of the client very demanding in terms of planning and construction. The goal of the project was to make the landscaping adapt to its environment, by picking native vegetation that fits to the hot and dry area but also to improve aesthetically the residences private garden. Added to that many retaining walls had to be made, without the use of con-

crete but only with large rocks from the area that together with some low vegetation would hold the soil and prevent it from falling. Added to that, some new roads had to be made inside the area for smalls golf cars to pass and have access to the whole site. The difficulty of this was the high inclination, sometimes over 20% and also the desire for the minimum built area in the landscape.

Eleftheria’s Square

an urban refurbishment of one of the major Squares in the city of Thessaloniki

Architectural Competition

Apr. 2013

Official Participation

Thessaloniki, Greece

Eleftherias Square, in the heart of Thessaloniki, has to be changed from a huge parking area into a lively and walkable part of the city. The reduction of car traffic in this area requires transformation of the perimetrical uses as well as changes to the existing traffic habits and regulations, in order to gain a vibrant, green and sustainable new square which will become the city’s entrance from the sea.

Restoration of continuities of the crossing streets 1) Kalapothaki and Oplopeou and 2) Rogoti and Nikis Ave provides continuity in the walking experience. Additionally, walking experience provides the restoration of continuities of the diagonal crossings of the square. All the above roads have a common crossing point where we propose to be placed a monumental «focal point» which will characterizes the area and will transform Eleftherias square, into the entrance gate to Thessaloniki’s historic center.

The greening strategy for Eleftherias sq (big green areas, tree grids, tree rows and shrub planting) is combined with the existence of water features (reflecting water feature and surface with underground fountains) and the use of the rainwater collection method through permeable paving materials, is expressing the importance of the water strategy in our study.

Four Piers for Urban Sea Transportation for the coastline of Thessaloniki

Architectural Competition

Apr. 2011

Self employed

Official Participation

Thessaloniki, Greece

Collaborator: Dimitrios Avramidis

The national architectural competition was about the design of 4 stations in specific sites along the city’s waterfront for Thessaloniki’s Urban Sea Transportation. The platform of the station was pre-given, measuring 15 by 23 meters, with desired closed space of 120m2. The design of the Pier is based on a simple principle; a roof has been created, measuring the same as the platform, on top of which a new public space has been created. Simultaneously, the embarkment level is treated with great simplicity. The requested closed space

is considered as a transculent box measuring 20x6x3m, which includes all the uses of the station.

and right above the volume of the service uses, photovoltaic panels are beeing placed, which produce enough power for the electricity needs of the station.

Tasos Roidis - Portfolio of Selected Works

On the back side of the platform a ‘closed’ volume with the service uses has been implemented, which creates a dipole -in terms of plan- with the Green Tower. The latter, is the connector between the two levels, and functions as an artificial tree. Its structure is a simple iron mesh, on which climbs creeper vegetation. Furthermore, on the upper level,

The national student competition regards to the design of a new multifunctional building and the roofing for a small amphitheater in the Polytechnic School of University of Thessaly. The main idea of the project is to create an open square [plateia] in the center of the theater, circular of which all the uses are arrayed. The oblong building mass houses the multifunctional space which works as an auditorium, exhibition or leisure space, and also

houses a small luncheonette for the campus. The square is defined by a series of thin pillars, the density of which changes regarding the movements. As a result, the pillars around the square are sparse, while near the multifunctional space the become dense, in order to hold the roof of the amphitheater as well as of the multifunctional building.

Filothei - Athens, Greece

Architectural Design & Visualization

The national architectural competion was about the design of an urban park in Filothei area in Athens. The Park is in the limit of a quiet neighborhood on one side and a heavy traffic road on the other. The park is pine-tree grove with rich natural vegetetion.

* Second, a central circular square was created with sitting area and water surface to improve the microclimate of the area. Two triangular paths that lead to it and a sweeping path out of clay court for jogging and walking that go through the site were proposed. * Third, a natural slope with a thick henge on the limit of the heavy trafic road was designed, to eliminate the noise and create a quiet and isolated area inside the park.

The design of the proposal was based on three principles: * First, all the pine trees were kept, and more trees were suggested.

Kaimaktsalan 1750m

Diploma Thesis - A.U.Th Exhibited in the XV Biennale de la Mediterranee, “Symbiosis”, Thessaloniki 2011

The diploma thesis is about the extension of the Ski Resort “Kaimaktsalan”, which lies on the mountain Voras in Northern Greece, and specifically 40km from the city of Edessa. The selected location for the settlement of the new basis of the ski resort lies on the altitude of 1750m above sea level, and 4km before the switchback ends in the existing basis of 2050m. The climate in this specific location is characterized as semi-alpine, considering the vegetation as well as the weather conditions.

Voras Mountain, Greece

Collaborator: Dimitris Avramidis

On the altitude of 1735 meters above sea level, any kind of high vegetation stops growing, and the landscape of tall pine and fir trees turns into a deserted land, as the extreme weather conditions do not allow any growth of vegetation. In this special place where the vegetation meets the desert, the last border is being placed, by the formation of an “embankment”, which refers to the retaining walls of the steep slopes.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE VOLUME IS BASED ON THE PREVAILING WIND DIRECTION THAT FORMS IT IN A WAY THAT AIR COULD EASILY FLOW ABOVE IT.

By translating the building scenario into space, the “embankment includes the private life, the rooms for the hotel tenants, while simultaneously it represents the borderline, the step for the composition of the public functions. The buildings of public uses are formed as a progressive ascension, which refers to a climbing to the highest peak of mountain Voras at 2550m. In plan, this crooked line of climbing starts from the section of the hotel and progressively becomes the ski lift station and the chalet.

Its position is characterized by the proximity to the ski facilities, as well as to the the small nearby river. 3/ The Chalet Building. Hosting the public bar and restaurant of the resort, it is placed both close to the ski tracks and to the parking lot. 4/ The Vital Empty Space. All movements to the buildings are being splited through this plot. 5/ The Parking Area. reinventing the most common urban housing typology of the greek cities

Diploma Studio - A.U.Th

The theme of the project is the design of a complex building in central Thessaloniki, which has three levels of underground parking, two levels of a shopping center, and six levels for housing. This building type is the most common in the greek cities since the 1960’s. The design solution is based upon a modulor, which is a twin storey flat, with a private, double-heighted, yard with a green wall, stacked one on top of the other, and one next to the other.
