NEBIDA_SARDINIA

EDUCATIONAL LABORATORY The reuse of the former washery in the area of Nebida, on the west coast of Sardinia, was the main topic of the two weeks workshop and this project. The abandoned complex of the mine’s washery and the idea of finding new ways to decontaminate the soil by using natural methods, was the kick off for this project. The proposal consists of a laboratory, dealing with the decontamination of the water and next to it an exhibition space, offering all the information to the visitor about enviromental issues and the results of the laboratory research. The project is located on the rough seaside, creating a new platform, in terms of a port for transportation and flooding baths for recreation. It is divided into three volumes: the tower of the entrance area and the spaces of the laboratorium, the reuse of the abandoned storage building and the space in between for the exhibition. The are is accessible in two ways, by walking down the hill, from the existing parking lot on the top of the cliff and by boat during the summer months, from the seaside. In this way the tower is used as a double entrance area, stretched into the vertical direction. The exhibition spaces, are formed by the artificial landscape of the port - platform, and covered with a roof. The materials used are visible concrete for the tower and the platform, passivated black steal and profilit glass for the exhibition spaces. ARCHIV MARZONA Every object derives its meaning through the space that is located or through the necessity for which it was created, as a result of an intellectual procedure. A mental mechanism of grouping, ranking, remembering or forgetting of an archive “object”, is forming an apparatus. For this project, the archive is perceived as such an apparatus, mainly a structure of long term time and space existence, which are awaiting a mobile and temporary content. The design of this archive-apparatus in other words, is an empty structure, a designed absence of the content. What we need, are mechanisms, which will give meaning to the terms of organizing, grouping, preservation, hierarchy and storage. The experience of the visitor during the trip to the Archive is the kick off for this design. The perception of the impact of the manpower onto the impressive landscape is one of the major memories after this trip. The meeting point of Riverso river and the mountains is the location of the human interventions, water collectors, protection from the slides, bridges, which are forming the view-scape of the visitor. In this way the Archive Marzona, is located at the meeting point of the fields and the mountain, intergrated into the landscape, bringing back the abstract, functional structures of the surroundings. STUDENTENWETTBEWERB WASSERFELS ARENA The existence of the old stone quarry is looking for a new function that is dealing with the insertion of culture in a pre-existing structure. The natural element and the existing intervention of human into it, is the kick off for the concept to design the infrastructure for a dance festival with 2500 audience. Dance is proposed as the art form that uses the body as an expressional medium through movement, characterized as the ultimate nonverbal communicational form between people. The creation of such an infrastructure has a result the enrichment of the cultural scene of the area, accompanied with the development of tourism and social interaction of the local community, working as a knot for the region. The diagram shows the different organization of people, and the communication between them in the spatio-temporal era of a performance. The relationship and the shape depends on the phases of their experience and is an example of the individual or swarm behaviour of people. Such cummunication diagrams are able to give form and the sequence of the different spaces and how their are used during a visit.

MATMATA_TUNISIEN

ECOLODGE HAMAM Making architecture with earth, the development of an underground network for housing, getting the advantage against the climate were the first notices about Matmata, together with the feeling of the hilly topography. A more precise analysis of this special location provides the ideas and the principles that form this space. Open air big courtyards with the closed living areas around are connected with the public space through long tunnels. These are the principles that lead to the first ideas for the design of the hotel. Public spaces are on a public promenade that connects the city with the market. The reception, the offices, the pc-room, the hamam, the exhibition centre, the bar-restaurant, the shop and a small market place are all located between this promenade and an atrium- yard, bringing in this way the locals and the tourists together. The idea of the underground construction meets the gain of thermal advantages against the extreme climate. The rooms are located for this reason in two underground levels and they are connected with the pass ways with the public spaces or the landscape. Every room has either a small atrium, a terrace or a yard as an outdoor private space, creating in this way indoor and outdoor spaces with completely different atmosphere. The materials used are clay bricks, plaster reinforced concrete, wooden window frames and handmade textiles for shading. The so called social sustainable design in connection with the underground experience were the kick off and the for the whole design, formed by the traditional way of building in a contemporary way of living and thinking. SPA HOTEL The building consist of a hotel with 32 rooms, 48 beds, and a spa with an external swimming pool for the summer converted into ice skating rink for the winter and interior wellness facilities. It is developed into 3 levels between the lines of two promenades: an indoor and an outdoor one, which are connected in order the atmosphere of the complex to change during the year. The rooms are divided in two categories. The first one is designed to host families and so it is developed in two levels in order parents and children to have more individuality. The first floor consists of a yard, the secondary bedroom and a kitchen, while the second of the main bedroom, the bathroom and an external terrace. The second category of rooms is appropriate for couples with the main bedroom, the bathroom and a small yard and the terrace to be on the same level. All rooms are accessible through the winter promenade which connects the reception with the spa. The swimming pool is located on the top of the second floor on the same level as the restaurant. The swimming pool is part of the nice surrounding’s landscape at the same level with the land so as people can relax and enjoy their bath and sunbath in the nature. Both are accessible from the winter and the summer promenade. The material of the building is reinforced bare concrete. Only the sitting area of the restaurant is made of a lighter steel construction and the windows of the rooms of wood. The southern orientation of the building lead to the big surface of glass on the southern elevation. For every two rooms there is a front yard which in the winter is closed in order to collect the solar energy while in the summer is opened improving the cooling of the rooms.
